This years staff also had a new advisor for the year, and I’m sure it was a learning experience for all of us. We tried to make this years book one that everyone can be proud of. We would like to thank everyone who contributed. Oak News A great deal of thanks and appreciation goes to all those who were i n -volved on the ACORN and OAK NEWS staffs. Every year the students of the Junior class vote to determine which students will make up the Junior Advisory Council. This year it was made up of sixteen members. The Junior Advisory Council does many things throughout the year. They are all based around the central idea of raising money for Prom. For a while during the year there were rumors shooting around about the possibility of Prom being held in the Gym. Thanks to some great effort from the Junior Advisory Council, our Prom was held at the Sheraton Inn in Danville, and was a great success. One of the major sources of income came from wrapping paper sales. The Junior Advisory Council organized teams and a leader was appointed for each team. There were cash prized offered as incentives for the sales. Tim Hays came out of the competition on top. He was the individual to sell the most wrapping paper and was awarded a cash prize. They also have a raffle for those involved in the sales. Tim also was awarded a cash prize in the raffle. There was just one other way the Junior Advisory Council earned money for Prom. They accomplished this goal by working in the concession stand during sports events. The sixteen members on the Junior Advisory Council gave up a lot of their time, and worked very hard this year. Although their efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Because of this group of students, our 1983-84 Prom was a great success. As stated earlier, the 1983-84 Junior Senior Prom was held on April 28, 1984 at the Sheraton Motor Inn in Danville. The music was presented by Bob Taylor, and the theme for the night was, “TONIGHT”. The Co-Sponsors for the Junior Advisory Council were Mrs. Libby Fathauer and Mrs. Mary Wright. We would like to say thanks to everyone involved. 34 Student Council Leads Students Student Council Officers: Renae Freisen, Corresponding Secretary; Colleen Brehm, Secretary; Troy Hobick, President; l.ori West, Vice President; Chad Barnes, Treasurer. The 1983-84 Student Council consisted of 23 members representing the four classes and other school organizations. The student council was responsible for arranging the 1983 Homecoming and other events held this year. Money was raised by selling refreshments during football and basketball games. The officers including President Troy Hobick led the council. In addition to the officers, members were directed by Mrs. Page. Mrs. Page joined the Oakwood staff this year and along with her teaching duties she accepted the post of student council advisor. The 1983-84 Student Council would like to thank all those who have contributed to make this a very exciting and profitable year. Some of the responsibilities of the office workers are to record the attendance of students in classes, to pick up the attendance slips each hour and to perform other duties as needed. The kitchen workers help in preparing the meals, in serving the students and in cleaning the cafeteria and utensils after lunch hour. The services rendered by these students are greatly appreciated by the cooks and the administration. This year Mrs. Judy Steffen was the recipient of the senior roast. Troy Hobick visits with Mrs. Steffen Bob Taylor and Lindsay discuss the mysteries of life. The new Mrs. S. Participants Honored Interscholastic Bowlers Receive Honors This year there were a variety of banquets held to honor their participants. On these pages we would like to honor some of the people who have worked hard. In the pictures at the top of the page, the interscholastic bowlers are honored. Their banquet was held at the Moose Lodge in Danville. Miss Dana Bowyer was their bowling sponsor for the year. Everyone had some adjusting to do, as she became used to the bowling program, and as the bowlers adjusted to a new sponsor. Congratulations on a fine year! Pictured below are three girls who participated in Co-mettes for four straight years. These girls had to be very dedicated and gave up a Bowling Sponsor — Miss Bowyer lot of their spare time. Since Comettes do so many different things and do give up so much of their time, very few girls participate for four years. This year we were fortunate enough to have three girls do this. Congratulations and best of luck, you will be greatly missed next year. We would again like to thank Mr. Shafer for everything he has 103 done for us. Students And Faculty Participate In Programs Illinois Governmental Internship Program Teresa Burgin participated in the 1983-1984 Illinois Governmental Internship Program. This program is sponsored by the Springfield Public Schools and Illinois State Board of Education. The students who are selected to participate take a semester sabatical from their regular studies during their senior year. Interns move to Springfield and live with new houseparents and housefamilies throughout the city. Teresa did her internship at the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs. She worked in the Small Business Assistance Office under the direction of her sponsor Ms. Vickie Kovski. She worked with small business hotline, the Governor’s Small Business Advisory Commission, and the Small Business Development Center Program. When asked she stated, “the experience I gained at DCCA and just from being in the program and learning to work in the government system was terrific. I am really glad to have been lucky enough to be selected to participate.” Teresa Burgin Master Teacher Program This year the Illinois General Assembly allocated funds for the institution of a program to recognized outstanding teachers. Mrs. Norma Anderson was selected as one of five Master Teachers from Vermilion County. To be selected she was nominated and had to write a paper on her teaching philosophies. For being selected Mrs. Anderson received a cash award and other awards. Mrs. Anderson is now under consideration as the 1984 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Anderson has been teaching at Oak-wood for 11 years. She graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor of science in education with a major in Spanish and a minor in Biology. She teaches Spanish I-IV and Biology I-IV. While at Oakwood she has been a class advisor and organizer of many trips to Mexico, Hawaii, and Europe. She is also Scholastic Bowl coach and International Club advisor.
