The '78 ACORN staff would like for you to TAKE A CLOSER LOOK at what's been happening during the school year 1977-78. Although winning football games is his main interest, he is concerned with every sport, and can turn a pep assembly into a PEP assembly. For this reason he has sometimes been called Mr. Spirit.” It is an honor and privilege to dedicate the 1978 ACORN of Oakwood Township High School to Mr. Rich Eaton — The Coach.” Thank you, Mr. Eaton, for what you have done for our school. Sincerely, The Students of O.T.H.S. Caught in the act. . . School isn’t all work and no play — how much can you get away with? If you get caught, don’t be surprised if you end up on the well-known red carpet in Mr Keever’s office. For some, school is studying hard to make good grades and getting all they can from each class. For others, school is just trying to remember which book to take to what class. But for everyone, school has its fun side, too. Before school,- between classes, or during lunch hours are some of the favorite times of the day to spend with friends, cram for a biology test the next hour, or just relax. H Many long hours of planning and preparing became a reality as the Student Council presented the 1977-78 Homecoming Dance. The atmosphere was glistening in colors of purple and silver as the band, Wiley Foxx, provided music for the occasion. Anticipation filled the air as Marty Baumeister and Cindy Smith were named king and queen. Only memories of good times remain of the 1977-78 Homecoming. Spirits were high and the enthusi asm was stirring as the bonfire got under way the night before the '‘big game ’ The huge fire and the flaming “0 were sure signs of a Homecom mg victory. But the flames flickered out a little too soon as the 1977 78 football season came to a crashing end when Catlin spoiled our chances for the state playoffs in a 42 6 Home coming defeat. 15 iMui Students With Active Parents The parents of the students have a very exciting day at school, as they learn that it is much harder than what they remember. The students are home doing their parents’ work, while the parents are at school learning the mathematical equations and biological terms that the students try so hard to remember. At the end of their day at school, diplomas are given to all the parents stating their grades, proving that they passed. Congratulations, parents, on a very successful day at O.T.H.S. Dramatics Club Presents Fall Play-Up the Down Staircase UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE, a two-act comedy by Bel Kaufman, focuses on the daily routine of an inner city New York high school. The major action centers on the experiences of a naive first-year teacher, Sylvia Barrett, as she attempts to cope with the fast-paced, and often unnerving, world of the high school. The manner in which she relates to the students, faculty, and administration creates a backdrop on which one is able to evaluate Sylvia’s personal growth. The conclusion of the play provides a surprise, even for Sylvia. CAST Sylvia Barrett................ Beatrice Schachter............ J.J. McHabe................... Paul Barringer................ The Future Homemakers of America put many hours of hard work together and opened the doors upon this year's Sweetheart Dance. Everyone was dancing and enjoying themselves to the music of the band “Misty,” but when 10 o’clock came all eyes were turned to coronation. While the band played the theme “You Light Up My Life,” our reigning queen, Cathy Bantz, crowned the 1978 queen Linda Lucas. It was truly a magic moment that will be long rembered by Linda! Our Queen Linda Lucas Captured Memories As the caption above says, these are captured memories. Teachers and Students Participate Student Council Week was supported well this year by teachers and students. The activities were planned and organized by members of the Student Council for the enjoyment of everyone. There was a T-shirt Day, A teacher student Switch Day (where the students got to take charge in class and “teach”), a basketball game featuring the male faculty -vs- the senior guys, and a volleyball game featuring the female faculty -vs- the senior gals. A highlight of the week’s activities was an assembly for a group from Wheeling H.S. called “New Dawn who performed and sang so well that our students called them back for three encore numbers! 30 The first day. The jumping ability and shooting power of this team was something to behold. Their fast break destroyed many good teams this year and made the season enjoyable for the fans also. It was one of the few teams in Oakwood history to win 20 games and the team, school, and community should be justly proud. Hopefully, the players can look back on this season with pride and fond memories and realize they have learned the lessons that all high school athletics can teach. Jerry Smith Lettered Tim Lettered It's their first year at high school; the girls they are cheering with are all from different schools so they have different preferences about how to do this or that. They don't have time to order new uniforms so they have to wear hand-me-downs from previous years. The Varsity and J.V. don’t have time to help them. And to top it all off, the normal quota of fans at a Fresh- man game usually adds up to 10! Even though it could get very frustrating at times, these four girls with all their hard work and determination, made it through the traumatic experience of tryouts and went on to have a Super Great year cheering for their Freshman athletes. 1. Captain, Leslie Covington, 2. Pam Keller, 3. Terry Shipman, 4. Paula Harden. The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders put in a lot of time and effort and had a Dynamite year cheer ing for the Comets! These girls represented their teams well through the 1977-1978 season. The five girls this year handled themselves well and because of the experience of being a Junior Varsity cheerleader are better people for it. The J.V. cheerleaders are 1. Captain, Debbie Bott, 2. Jama Terry, 3. Wanda Pearson, 4. Vicki Mullins, and 5. Pam Clark. 53 VAR CHEERL The Varsity cheerleaders had a very worthwhile year. These six girls showed enthusiam and loyalty throughout the 1977-1978 season. It is a tough job to constantly work trying to keep up the school spirit and they were always there trying. The two seniors in the squad can look back with pride at their accomplishments at Oakwood High! The Varsity cheerleaders are 1. Captain, Jennifer Doney, 2. Connie Culp, 3. Keri Trimble, 4. Carrie Clem, 5. Susie Cox, 6. Missy Burke. SITY EADERS During the 1977-1978 school year, I had the distinct pleasure of working with fifteen girls. People sometimes do not realize the effort that is put into being a good representative for their teams and school. They practice many hours in the summer, attend camp, and when school begins in the fall many long evenings are spent in practice. Being a cheerleader not only teaches leadership, but also teaches cooperation and striving to always keep a positive attitude. As an advisor probably one thing that I stressed the most was keeping a good attitude in all situations. Hopefully, the honor of being a cheerleader will be with the girls throughout their lifetime! The team is losing only two seniors, yet their absence will be felt. The agenda has expanded greatly for next year with three tourneys and nineteen dual meets scheduled. Our newest addition to our wrestling team is the new mat. It was used in the Assembly Hall for the state finals and the team is really proud. The team consisted of nine freshmen, six sophomores, three juniors, and one senior. It was a building year for the girl Conets as they ended with a 4-9 season; the Junior Varsity with a 5-2 record. The Varsity placed third in the Jamaica County Tournament with Sharon Shaffer making the All Tournament Team. A high point for the season was playing in the sub-regionals. The girls won over Mahomet in the first round and lost to St. Joe in the final. Cheryl DeVore was voted Most Valuable Player for the year. The following were reasons she was valuable to us; she held the records for the year on: Total points for season High Scorer in one game Free Throws for season and % Most Rebounds in one game Total Rebounds for season. Cheryl was also voted unanimously on the All County Team and Sharon Shaffer was voted on the East Central Conference (ECC) Team. After all of the cancellations due to snow, rain, and cold weather, the baseball season finally got under way. And in the end, the result was a GREAT one! L to R: Brian Myrick, Todd Lee. Golf attracted quite a few participants this year and found the sport to be testing, but enjoyable though it requires much concentration. With only 2 returning golfers, Mark Mullins and Scott Wahlfeldt, the young and inexperienced golf team worked hard at improving their games. Golf instructor, Ed Biehl, brought these beginners a long way in such a short time. As senior “swinger,” Mark Mullins, said about Mr. Biehl . . . “he’s the best!” The golfers “putted” their way to become 4th in the county. 71 73 Earning Money While Earning Credits First Semester: Bottom Row. Acorn Staff Presents “Ten dollars for a yearbook?”, “What does the cover look like?”, “Are there any color pages?”, “Oh, the seniors are in color? Hey, that really sounds nice!”, “A bigger size? I guess that ten dollars isn’t so much after all!” Questions very much like these traveled up and down the hallways as the '78 ACORN went on sale. Soon, people began to expect something different and better than before — well, now you’ve got it! New staff members were recruited, a summer workshop was attended, a new company was contracted and it all started to simmer. Many hours of brainstorming for interesting ideas, jotting them down on rough drafts, choosing and cropping pictures, finalizing ideas at night workshops, and putting it all down on the “quad-pack” to be sent to the publisher, have gone into producing the ’78 ACORN. 76 Take a Closer Look Officers L to R Suzanne Perry and Missy Burke. Ad Managers. Tam Cunningham, Jr Assistant Editor; Sherri Stallings, Student Council Representative. Marcia Roberts. Assistant Editor. Carrie Clem, Senior Class Manager; Gloria Wickham; Editor Our praise and gratitude goes to Ms. Jeanette Bahnke, our advisor, for standing behind us all as we worked to produce the 78 Acorn. As a first year advisor, she worked with the officers in selecting a publishing company to meet our needs and expectations. Whenever night meetings were scheduled, she came ready and willing to work (also satisfying our sweet tooths by bringing “goodies to eat). By arranging fund raisers such as candy sales, patron sales, advertisement sales, and yearbook sales, we were able to pay off outstanding debts from previous years while also funding this years Acorn. With all of the time and effort Ms. Bahnke has contributed to this yearbook, it’s hard to believe she has any time for working on her master’s degree, being advisor of Dramatics, Thespians, and International Club as well. Here's to you, Ms. Bahnke. Thanks for everything! Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises were combined this year as the 1978 graduates hoped for clear skies in order to have the ceremony outside on Comet football territory. The graduating seniors received their diplomas, threw confetti signifying a victory and amid tears, smiles, hugs and kisses bid farewell to Oakwood High. 115 Good Luck Seniors 1 16 da?ss of 1978 Other Classes Fall Behind But Not the Class of 79 Greg Adolph Connie Albright Mindy Alexander Steve Bailey Jake Baker Jean Bantz Bob Billings Randy Birge Dan Blaker Lynn Bloomfield Erica Brimm Terri Britton Missy Burke Virgil Burke Brian Cannon Scott Carlson Bill Carson Jeff Caudill Tony Cessna Gary Chestnut Diane Childers Julie Christians Pam Clark Alan Cockrell Jackie Coon Roger Coon Roy Coon Susie Cox Carolyn Cramer Connie Culp 120 Teresa Cundiff Tam Cunningham Lori Davis Scott Davis Tammy Davis Mark Denhart Greg Dickinson Nancy Dimmitt Steve Doan Russel Dreher Brad Dukes Kathy Duncan Margaret Engelmann Jon Fisher Tim Fox Jim Frazier Jim Frye Brenda Gan Carl Gouldmg Lori Greer Kevin Hannon Marc Hanson Scott Harden Phil Harper Glenn Harris Carolyn Hicks Dave Howie Kay Howie Ray Howie Tim Hutfman Tim Hyde Darlene Jeffers Penny Jenkins Robert Keith Carla Kimmell Cuff Kinney 121 John Kinney Rick Kist Kim Kumch Karen Livingston Todd Lomax Janet Lucas Jim Marsh Lisa Martin Mark Maxwell Todd McClure Lisa Miller Rochelle Miller Sue Miller Anne Mmser Jan Moody Brian Moore Julie Moore Tim Mullins Brian Myers Brad Myrick Alan Needham Janice O'Neill Kirk O'Neill Lisa Otis Cathy Partin Merryanne Pawlak Bev Peetz Suzanne Perry Kenny Pichon Tom Ratliff Jim Rebmann Lori Rice Kevin Richards Lee Richey Terri Roberts Cliff Schafer 122 Penny Schultz Jack Shaffer Cathy Shank Lisa Sherman Jerry Smith Jackie Spencer John Squires Cathy Stark Sandy Steele Sue Tellier Rick Terrell Kevin Tharp Elizabeth Thomas Brenda Thompson Keri Trimble Jerry Trussel Tom Venis Mark Vinson Cindy Weller Cheryl White Laura Wickham Tina Wilbanks Tim Wilson Rick Witsman Marsha Wozencraft Julie Wright Liza Zigler Pictures Not Available: Ray Gilkison Charles Harmeson Pete Jenkins Bruce Myrick Brad Polick Bob Pollock Karla Richardson Kevin Sellers Jim Stunkard Susan Thompson 123 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Pres.-Karen Livingston, V. Our high school during this past year may be said to have been a microcosm of this situation. The Seniors of 1978, having left night shadowed in memories, are in the process of stepping onto the immense world-stage where their performances will be scrutinized and evaluated. In their efforts they will need to apply and adopt the voluminous material accrued during their years of formal education. It is hoped that they will succeed, but success is a transitory quality. I feel that if an individual makes his best effort, he is worthy of the term success. It is toward this goal of equipping man to deal with his world that education has continued to strive over the centuries. Education should never be viewed as a tool with which to fashion myriads of identical robots. It is, rather, a vast workshop in which each person learns to fashion his most effective self. Centuries ago, in Greece, a man named Plato made a remark which is just as apt today: “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life.” The hopes of our nation and world lie in the youth of today. It is our heartfelt wish that the individuals passing from our doors will be doing so with pride and assurance in themselves and their capabilities. — Mr. Arbuckle 137 Teachers Are People, Too Sometimes it is difficult for a student seated in a classroom to think of a teacher as being anything other than a teacher. But the person holding that textbook or writing on the blackboard does have a life outside of school. Teachers do not anxiously await Monday mornings and they are not disappointed on “snow days. If anything, they look forward to “TGIF , Thank God It’s Friday, more than the students. They don’t enjoy grading papers, making out deficiency slips, or giving students a hard time. Teachers want their students to succeed. They do their best and it’s time we appreciated their efforts. 138 1 Marcia Johnson — Jr. Sr. English 2 Raymond Parkhursf — Music 3 Robert Shafer — Mathematics 4 Lynn Anderson — Health 5 Gail West — Clerical Worker 6 Michael Waters — Guidance Counselor 7 Janice Pickens — Home Economics 8 Sue Hathaway — Teacher Aid 9 Ray Wittmann — American History, Contemporary Issues 10 Clinton Wickham — Freshman English 139 1 Mary Wright — English, Study Hall 2. The kitchen help would make sure everything was in order around the kitchen, while the cooks insured a good meal. The office help would keep things working smoothly in the office. The secretaries would always be there with a friendly smile to help you with any needs you might have. Thanks to all the secretaries, cooks, and helpers. Bob Wells. Bryan Cox and Jim Marsh. Trash Crew Floyd Martin Clyde Trimmell These are the people who dedicate most of their time to be at the service of OTHS faculty and students. They are to be commended on behalf of their hard work and support throughout the year. Many of them are here before and after school hours to make things better for all of us. As Clyde Trimmell said about the picture to the left: “I’ve always looked up to Floyd,” we are able to say, “We'll always look up to them.” Other maintenance workers are Norma Beauvois, Jessie Koontz, Dan O’Banion, and George Cisson. Many hours of imaginative brainstorming, planning, working, sweating, organizing and producing have been put into this book. I hope we have enabled you to recall all of the times to remember in the 1977-78 school year. I would like to thank some very special people who worked very hard to enable our efforts to be a success. Our advisor. Miss J. Bahnke came in to take over this position (after a little bit of persuasion) and gave time, talent, and encouragement to me especially and also to the staff. Also I would like to thank Taylor Publishing Company of Dallas, Texas, and their company representative, Michael Robinson for the help, guidance, and instruction, making this yearbook possible. Thanks also goes to each member of the staff — what can I say but, you are all terrific! WE DID IT! A special thanks goes to my assistant and friend, Marcia Roberts, for staying by me, sharing great ideas, and working hard. To next year’s staff and editors I want to wish the best of luck — it is a tough job to get a publication like this done, but all of the headaches, and worrying is worth it! Respectfully, Gloria Wickham '78 ACORN Editor
