Assistant Editor.......................... Secretary ................................ Business Manager ......................... Photographers ............................ Janice Neff Wayne Crawford Flo Anne Fuller .Lois Headlee Joe Miller Dona Jenkins Mr. Wasson Mr. Eyestone 00 s DEDICA TIOJV We, the Annual Staff of 1962-1963, wish to dedicate this year's Acorn to Mr. Flener. This man has spent ten years of his teaching career at Oakwood Township High School. Many of these ten years, he has served as an advisor to the Sophomore Class. Mr. Flener always has a smile and a friendly thought to give to all of the students at O. T. H. S. Students who haven't taken mathematics in high school, probably haven't gotten to know Mr. Flener; however, those to whom he has taught Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, or Trigonometry, will never be able to thank him enough for the understanding he has shown in helping them. 2 3 A Message from Our Superintendent The real test of an educational institution is the quality of its graduates. The opposite page is offered in evidence for your school. It lists some of the many fields where OTHS graduates have won recognition. Your Board and staff deserve recognition and support for work well done. The community's gratitude is the only reward the board can receive, and a few words of appreciation can transform a sometimes difficult task into a pleasant and rewarding experience of democratic civic duty. 4 OAKWOOD TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL IS RECOGNIZED AND APPROVED BY STATE OF ILLINOIS AND NORTH CENTRAL ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGE AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS. Pres.; Gary Trimmell, President; Nancy Grimm, Secretary; Dick Martoglio, Treasurer; Mr. Swengel and Mr. Schnelle Senior class advisors. SENIOR HISTORY Kl In September of 1959, ninety-five wild and scared Greenies entered Oak-wood Township High School. We entertained the upperclassmen on initiation day with our gunny sacks and bib overalls and the rest of the year with our ridiculous antics. It didn't take us long to figure out where to go next, but it took a lot of effort to figure out something to do next to get in trouble. As Sophomores, it was OUR turn to initiate and everyone had a smearin' good time at the initiation party. Also that year, our part in the Homecoming Assembly was Past and Present Proms.” Our Junior year was, at the very least, an active one. Our Junior Play, Bells on Their Toes, was quite a success as was our magazine sales campaign. All the money that we had earned that year went into the Junior-Senior Prom. Our theme was Moonlight and Roses and we don't know whether there was any moonlight that night, but there were roses by the dozen. As Seniors, we have sold candy, Christmas cards and washed cars to earn money for our Senior trip. Our class has been well represented these past four years. Our officers were: Presidents; Bill Sharpf, Steve Meade, and Gary Trimmell; Vice-Presidents Presidents; Steve Meade, Gary Timmell, Judy Sloan, and Ray Stringfield; Secretaries; Linda Gutterridge and Nancy Grimm; Treasurers; Leonard Hathaway and Dick Martoglio. As a Junior, Dona Jenkins was Vice-President of the Student Council and Leonard Hathaway was Parliamentarian, and now as Seniors, Judy Sloan is President and Flo Anne Fuller is Parliamentarian. Our boys are quite active in sports as is witnessed by the number of letter-men. They are Marvin Duden, Dale Miller, Bill Sharpf, Frank Schafer, Dick Martoglio, Daryl Smith, Steve Arnold, Steve Meade, Joe McGlaughlin, Ron Presswood, Clyde Corzine, Dave Slade, Sam Wynn and C. J. Oakwood. It should also be mentioned that Marvin Duden holds the Vermilion County high jump record of 5 foot 11 1 2 inches and Ron Presswood won the State pole vault contest with a vault of 12 foot 6 inches. Our Homecoming attendants were: Freshman; Dona Jenkins; Sophomore, Dona Jenkins; Junior, Linda Gutterridge; and Senior Attendants, Linda Gutterridge, Nancy Grimm, and Charlene DeRay with Dona Jenkins reigning as Miss Victory. Dona Jenkins and Pat Tanner represented our class for three years as cheerleaders, and Judy Sloan for one year. We, the class of '63 have had a lot of fun and learned a lot and wish all future Seniors the best of luck at Oakwood Township High School. 10 STEVE ARNOLD Arnie O' Club 2,3,4; Football 3,4; Baseball 2, 3,4; Basketball 3,4. They are President, Ed Me Clure; Vice-President, Tom Goodwine; Secretary, Lockie Swengel; and Treasurer, Margaret Hayes. We received our class rings the last of September which delighted us all. We sold magazines to sponsor our Prom. It was a lot of work, but we all agree it was worth it. In the fall we gave our Junior Play called Time Out for Ginger.” It was a success with the help of the Dramatics Club. Lockie Swengel was elected District Treasurer for Student Council. We are all very proud of Lockie. All of our Varsity Cheerleaders are Juniors. They are Sue Oakwood, Brenda Cox, Marsha Miller, and Lockie Swengel. We chose the following officers: Ken Miller, President; Patti Wilson, Vice-President; June Gary, Secretary; and Vickie Atwood, Treasurer. We were entertained by the sophomores at the annual initiation party, and plan to return the favor in the spring. We are proud of classmates Sandy Hendricks, the only freshman junior-varsity cheerleader, and Clemma McQueen who represented our class in Miss Victory's court. This is only one of the purposes of this club. Another is to increase our knowledge of science, which is the reason for our having projects, guest speakers, and occasional tours for scientific observation. Next, we must learn to perfect our skills in science by using past knowledge and experience in combination with our new ideas and theories. Lastly, we must give service in our community and nation which can only be done by encouraging others to become interested in the work that is yet to be done in the field of science. This is the Oakwood Knights of Science. Raymond Hadley .... President Tom Flener.............Vice President Sam Johnson............Treasurer Gary Trimmell .... Secretary Wayne Crawford . . . Since that time, secondary-school administrators throughout the United States have approved its objectives and have established over 8,500 local chapters in their schools. The founders of these school organizations established the National Honor Society to stimulate the high scholarship, constructive leadership, purposeful service, and worthy character of the students in the secondary schools of this country. To be a candidate for the National Honor Society, a student must have a scholastic average of B or higher and be considered outstanding in character, service, and leadership. The list of candidates is presented to the faculty or faculty committee who then elects'those individuals whom they feel are qualified to membership in the society. No students are allowed to vote for or against a candidate. The Oakwood Chapter of the National Honor Society was established in 1948 with twenty-one charter members. To date one hundred ninety-four students have been chosen to membership. The members of the Oakwood chapter serve their school by acting as official greeters, escorts, and ushers at various school functions such as a Career Day, and other events when large groups of people are touring the school property. With these things in mind, we of the Acorn” staff salute this group of good citizens of O.T.H.S. 47 STUDENT COUNCIL President................Judy Sloan Vice-President...........Sam Johnson Secretary................Lockie Swengel Treasurer ............... Brenda Cox Advisor..................Mr. Harrigan The Student Council began its year of activity by sponsoring the annual Homecoming Dance, September 28. Student Council members devoted a great deal of time and energy toward making the dance a real success; and we think it was. November 3 was the Champaign District Student Council Convention at Decatur -Eisenhower High School. Besides bringing home new ideas and new Student Council material, Oakwood was honored to bring home the new District Treasurer, Lockie Swengel. The Student Council is planning many more projects for the year, including a new savings-stamp program, a CARE Drive, a spring dance, a Dress-Up Day and Bermuda Day, and a Know-Your-School campaign. We also are revising the Constitution. By spring we hope to have enough money to send three Council representatives and Mr. Harrigan to the State Convention. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to our advisor, Mr. Harrigan, for without his help and expert guidance, the Student Council could not operate successfully. Each year the Annual Staff puts forth its best effort to publish a better annual than it has ever sold before. This involves much more than the majority of students think. Each fall we, the members of Annual Staff, spend two afternoons soliciting advertising throughout this area in order to sell the annual to you at the lowest price possible. After receiving ads and selling annuals, pictures are taken, both individual and group. Then our work really begins. Between November and February we must meet four deadlines to the printers. Meeting these deadlines is seldom easy since so much work is needed to prepare the pages that must be sent in. These pages must have the pictures drawn on them, be typed, and have all pictures numbered to correspond with the number on the page. In addition, advertisements must be placed on these pages. As you can see Annual Staff is busy most of the year whether it be noticeable or behind the scenes. Thus, we are able to present this book to you. This year the Oak News has seen many new changes. In years past, the same thing over and over has appeared until a routine was set. Several new sections have been added and, we hope, have been making the Oak News more readable. The Coach's Column was added at the beginning of basketball season and has proved very entertaining as well as informative. Editorials are also a new addition and have expressed many opinions about varied subjects. Also, this year, we are proud to say that underclass participation has been asked for and received. The Oak News, we hope, is no longer a senior paper, it's the whole school’s. Of course, the Rhetoric class is the writing part of the Oak News, but few people realize that an Oak News would not exist if it were not for the Office Practice class and Miss Allison. These volunteers assist in the duties of checking out books, replacing cards, and returning books to the shelves. They also help to provide reading materials. In order to purchase books and equipment for the library, the librarians raise money by sponsoring a Bunny Hop Dance with a local T. V. personality as master of ceremony. As the organization progressed, more and more students became interested in taking care of the library. This year 35 girls are working under the guidance of the Librarian, Mrs. Fisher. For the benefit of the members, there is a Christmas party; the members decorate a tree, present a small play, have refreshments, and sing Christmas songs--then Santa arrives. Each year Dramatics members work very hard to meet requirements for Thespian membership. They do this in many ways. Memberships to Red Mask and Light Opera are offered each year. This year about half of Dramatics attend the University of Illinois presentation of Richard II. The group enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt and the assemblies that were presented in cooperation with Speech Class. We have also presented two plays in cooperation with the Junior and Senior classes. This year we not only represented our school at District Speech Contest, but we also participated in an invitational contest at Champaign. Many changes have been made in the Dramatics Room this year. It has been thoroughly cleaned, dressing table mirrors hung, wardrobes made, and a flat holder installed so our scenery will not warp. All this has been done by students from Speech Class. 62 JUNIOR PLAT CAST Seated, L.-R.: Gae VanAllen, Lizzie; Sue Oakwood, Ginger Carol; Leonard Hathaway, Howard Carol; Dona Jenkins, Agnes Carol; Marsha Hammon, Joan Carol; Virginia Duke, Jeannie Carol; Standing: Ray Stringfield, a teenager; Steve Bames, a teenager; Marsha Miller, a teenager; Charles Mercer, Mr. Wilson; Starr Gritten, a teenager; Larry Gutterridge, Ed Hoffman; Vicki Vinson, a teenager; Denny King, Eddie Davis; Don Gary, Tommy Green. On October 20, 1962, Time Out For Ginger was presented by the combined efforts of Dramatics and the Junior Class. The play, directed by Mrs. Sharpf, was a great success thanks to a lot of hard work. The proceeds from this play helped finance the annual Junior-Senior Prom. SYNOPSIS OF THE PLAY Mr. and Mrs. Howard G. Carol were prominent citizens in their town until he gave a simple little speech to the high school students. This speech caused his fourteen-year old daughter, Ginger, to go out for the football team and almost lose Tommy Green, her boyfriend. It caused some friction between Joan, his oldest daughter, and her boyfriend, Eddie, who was captain of the football team. The bank where Mr. Carol was working became the national laughing stock of the country and he was about to lose his job. He decided he would uphold his statement rather than see his daughter denied her basic rights! Ginger makes the team, but shortly afterward she realizes how much trouble she has caused and that she can be treated as an equal by acting as a young lady should. Mr. Carol kept his job, Ginger and Tommy went back together, and Joan and Eddie patched up their quarrel. 63 FIRST ROW: J. Francis, G. Thompson, L. Gutterridge, G. VanAllen, B. Cox, M. Fuller. Dona Jenkins Vice Pres. Joe McGlaughlin Sec. Janice Neff Treas. Judy Sloan Advisor Mrs. Sharpf Nine new members were initiated at the first of the year. Each of the old Thespians are producing a short one act play this year. This will give more people a chance to be in a play and help them gain experience in acting. The Thespians have been busy doing odd jobs and selling hand cream to earn money for their trip. On December 26 and 27 the Thespian troop went to Chicago where they saw two stage plays: Carnival and Mary, Mary. They stayed in the Sheridan hotel where they saw the Don McNeil Breakfast Club. This spring they will have another initiation thus ending their year. 65 66 1st ROW: J. Landers, L. Gutterridge, P. Wilson, G. Thompson, S. Redman, L. Williams, R. Davis, J. DeMoss. 2nd ROW: B. PEP CL UB The pep club is an important part of athletics. The purpose of the club is to support the team, boost school spirit, and promote good sportsmanship. We have cheered our team on to many victories, the most coveted one being the County basketball championship. A point system was established, and at the end of the year the ten members with the most points received awards. Clever tags to be worn to games were designed by various members. Hard work, sacrifice, and determination brought the 1963 County Championship to our Campus for the third time in the 34 year history of the Tournament. Much credit goes to Sharpf and Duden for their terrific rebounding ability and torrid tournament play; Smith for clutch playing and shooting ability that stymied the defense; LaValle for his deadly one handed jump shots and play-making techniques; McClure for his fad away jump shot and trickery under the basket; Gary for his passing manuevers and poise when the chips were down; High praise for Davis, West and Sperry who filled the gap when needed, and to Morman and Hess who graciously and eagerly made themselves available to meet all emergencies, regardless of circumstances. 77 Coach Lewis Steve Arnold (C) Hon. Varsity Jr. Varsity CHEERLEADERS The Varsity Cheerleaders for the 1962-63 season were elected on May 9, 1962. The election was early to allow the newly elected cheerleaders to attend the summer cheerleading camp held every year at Illinois State Normal University. At this camp we learned new cheers and a new style style of cheering; we brought home ideas for improving our cheering section. Also, there is a one day clinic, held every year at State Normal University, in the fall, which has the same purpose. At the football games the cheerleaders have the coffee concession. Their profits will send next year's cheerleaders to camp. The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders are elected in the fall of the year. They also attend the one day clinic. The purpose of the cheerleaders is to promote school spirit and the goal of the cheerleaders is to lead the best cheering section O.T.H.S. has ever had. The cheerleaders wish to extend their appreciation to our sponsors, Mrs. Sadler and Mr. Lewis.
