Oakwood, under the coaching of Mr. Hobick and Mr. Luzenske, finished the season with a fine record. They started the season by defeating Westville 27-7. The team displayed an excellent playing ability when they defeated Paxton 24-0 with Oliver and Williams making the touchdowns. Gibson City came next being defeated by the Comets with a score of 26-2. Koontz, Oliver, and Williams scored the winning touchdowns. Then Denhart, Oliver, and Koontz scored the touchdowns that gave us a 25-13 win over Georgetown. Suspense hit everyone when we were to play the toughest team in the conference. Koontz scored a touchdown on a short pass, and Christensen of Rantoul stepped out of the end zone which gave us two more points. Rantoul scored their winning touchdowns in the last minute of play after a pass interference was called against Oakwood. The final score was 9-13. We had a joyful homecoming when we defeated Hoopeston 20-6 with Oliver, Charles, and Denhart scoring the touchdowns. The last game of the season was with Watseka; Oliver and Koontz making the score 13-6. The 1958 football team was considered the best Oakwood has had since 1949. They won six games and lost one.
