Patricia Saunders ........Karen Sawyer Kay Barnes .......... Mr. Wasson Mrs. Bass Miss Allison DEDICATION To our coaches . . . We, the Class of '59, dedicate our yearbook. To you, the coaches, we offer this record of our hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. We hope you will keep this record on the marquee of your minds, for all of it, each tiny part, each perfect whole is yours. You, our directors and producers, deserve top billings . . . When the boys didn't quite know their plays, or were missing some of their tackles, you provided them. You kept the team improving their imperfections with an excess of training. You showed them how to revise their tactics, to make it fit for production. They were in the center of attention, then as now, and you were on the sidelines cheering them on, making them stars, and for this moment we want you to take the spotlight and accept our undying thanks and gratitude. 2 The most important resource of our country is its citizens. Other nations have large populations, plentiful natural resources, or a diversity in climate equal to ours. We lead all nations because our political liberty is coupled with a universal required public education to insure an intelligent electorate. Our high school is proud of its contribution to the community and nation. This annual is offered in evidence. Sincerely, Wayne E. They started the season by defeating Westville 27-7. The team displayed an excellent playing ability when they defeated Paxton 24-0 with Oliver and Williams making the touchdowns. Gibson City came next being defeated by the Comets with a score of 26-2. Koontz, Oliver, and Williams scored the winning touchdowns. Then Denhart, Oliver, and Koontz scored the touchdowns that gave us a 25-13 win over Georgetown. Suspense hit everyone when we were to play the toughest team in the conference. Koontz scored a touchdown on a short pass, and Christensen of Rantoul stepped out of the end zone which gave us two more points. Rantoul scored their winning touchdowns in the last minute of play after a pass interference was called against Oakwood. The final score was 9-13. We had a joyful homecoming when we defeated Hoopeston 20-6 with Oliver, Charles, and Denhart scoring the touchdowns. The last game of the season was with Watseka; Oliver and Koontz making the score 13-6. The 1958 football team was considered the best Oakwood has had since 1949. They won six games and lost one. Students pictured above are selected by the student body to represent them in conducting faculty-student co-ordinated activities and to assume the responsibilities of representative government as it basically exists outside school. The advisors, and faculty, present problems for the students to accept and carry out and in this way aid the faculty in the good management of a wholesome environment. Among the many problems are school spirit, alumni interests, recreation, operation of concessions, and the welfare of students in general. 18 ANNUAL STAFF SEATED: Mrs. Bass, M. Corn, Kay Nicols, J. Each year one girl and one boy are selected from the senior class as excelling in the following qualities which determine good citizenship: DEPENDABILITY—Truthfulness--Honesty—Punctuality SERVICE—Cooperation—Helpfulness--Responsibility LEADERSHIP--Personality--Self-Control--Initiative PATRIOTISM--Unselfish loyalty to American ideals The aim of this project is to pay tribute to youthful character and to call attention to those qualities which are desirable in good citizens. The students of the senior class select by vote, three girls and three boys, whom they believe are best qualified as good citizens on the basis of the four points above. From each of the three chosen, the faculty is asked to select one girl and one boy to represent the school as its Good Citizens. The Good Citizens selected by each high school receive a pin and certificate of award. 34 Ninety freshmen entered O.T.H.S. this year scared to death, yet excited at being in High School. They were helped along by the upperclassmen. C. Grimm On initiation day they put on a stylish fashion show featuring work trousers for the girls and gunny-sack dresses for the boys. We were glad to see two of our girls, Virlane Youmans and Janet Terry elected for Varsity cheerleading. The main events of the year were the receiving of our class rings in October, the magazine drive, and the Junior-Senior Prom. After the Prom, we were the delighted guests at the Senior return party. Cunningham 46 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Scared but determined, ninety-three new faces entered Oakwood Township High School in the fall of 1955 to begin a slow but enjoyable four year enrollment. These greenies are now the seniors--The Class of 1959. Getting in the swing of high school ways, our class provided laughs galore for the upperclassmen on initiation day and received full revenge at the sophomore return party. Officers for the year were Jack Richardson. President; Don Wynn. Vice-President; Larry Grimes, Secretary; Lorena Divan, Treasurer. Marjorie Phipps was homecoming queen attendant while Judy Jenkins and Jack Richardson represented our class as King and Queen candidates for the school carnival. Complete enjoyment came to our class members with the initiation of the new greenies for now we were sophomores and initiation antics were played up to the hilt. Officers for the year were Jack Richardson, President; Lorena Divan, Vice-President; Tom Stephens. Secretary; Mary Jo Corn. Treasurer. Vera Hawkins was crowned Harvest Moon Ball Queen of 1956. Then as time sped we quickly found another year had passed and we were now juniors--and most important we were upperclassmen. Our play The Perfect Idiot was a tremendous success as was the magazine drive and our concessions that boosted the class treasury and made it possible to have an outstanding prom. Class rings were received in October. Judy Jenkins was crowned Harvest Moon Ball Queen of 1957. Officers for the year were Steve Gritten, President; Dave Perry, Vice-President; Steve Koontz, Secretary; Mary Jo Corn, Treasurer.
