The jump from grade school to high school was a big one, but patient and helpful class advisors did their best to put us on the right road. The main events of the year were Initiation Day, Class Party, and a return party for the sophomores. Charlotte Fourez was elected to be our Homecoming attendant. Kay Schonians and I im Ingram represented the class as king and queen candidates for the school carnival. Our Sophomore year began with initiating the new Greenies. Bonnie Fuller was chosen to attend Miss Victory. Two years had passed and we entered our Junior year. We elected Shirley Vinson to be our Homecoming attendant. Our first class play, Mr. Co-ed was a huge success, as were our magazine sales. The Junior - Senior Prom highlighted the year. Judy Oakwood and Lorin Kinney represented us in the speech contest. Judy was named to the All-State Cast. Finally, with three active years behind us, we entered our Senior year. All four years, we have been well represented in sports. Our lettermen include: Bob Denhart, Frank Estock, Bob Bolton, Bob Richter, Steve Cannon, .Terry Miller, Roger Koontz, Rodney Wonderlin, and Mel- vin Melton. We were proud to see one of our candidates, Kay Schonians, crowned Miss Victory of 1958. Other candidates were Beverly Kent, Shirley Vinson, and Charlotte Fourez. Kay Schonians served OTHS as cheerleader all four years. Shirley Vinson was elected to the Varsity her Senior year. Now, all the members of the class of 58 are looking forward to the Junior - Senior Prom, and the Senior trip, which will culminate our activities here at OTHS. Then, last but not least, is that evening in May, when the class of 58 will bid OTHS good-by, and step out into the future as alumni. ,255 ,xy r.. .. ,, 'I Kg ai i. 45 Qi: ,, 7 3 4 mu.- r-kl-H. 5-7 , -early, if , X -- fig, - :ml frga-if?--W: -. H 4 K I 3 v f f -35 xl X tl wi The Junior Class The Junior Class started off the year with an election of officers. Our football concession consisted of hot chocolate, donuts, and candy. Our basketball concession was candy and pennants. Two Junior girls, Judy Jenkins and Sandy Oakwood, were elected to the varsity cheer- leading squad. Two of our main projects for the year were completed in a big way. We received our rings in October, making us the first Junior class to receive their rings so early in the school year. Our magazine sales drive provided us with a reasonable profit. Now our third and largest project lies just behind us. It was none other than the Junior- Senior Prom. With our eager and active class, the night was a huge success. President ...... Steve Gritten Vice-President . . . Dave Perry Secretary . ..... Steve Koontz Treasurer . . . They also found many smiling faces ready to help them adjust to their new and different lives. The freshmen entertained the student body and faculty on initiation day by wearing their gunny sack finery, and they are looking forward to initiating next year's greenies. During the year they shared many good times at parties with the sophomores. Norma Bloomfield was elected freshman attendant to the Homecoming Queen. Dear Readers: This year the Acorn staff decided to continue with the lithographic type of yearbook. We have included more and larger snapshots, informal pictures, and a new theme of dedication. Staff members worked hard to make our adver- tising campaign a success so that we could give you an Acorn with padded covers. We hope that when you look through your Acorn of 1958, you will re- call many of the highlights of the school year. The members of the Acorn Staff and the advi- sors, Mr. Boyer and Mr. Peterson, have worked long and hard to make this year's annual the best of all. He didn't weigh much but he made up for it in desire to play. STEVE CANNON Steve was always reliable and did his best for the team. His position of center was filled to its fullest anytime that Steve was in the game. BOB DENHART Bob lettered last season and again this season. Bob was one of the best and hardest working players on the team. He well deserves the honors he has received and he will leave a big dent in next season's team. DICK DENHART Dick, although only a sophomore this year, lettered on the varsity squad. Dick was one of the best backfield men in the county, and he will be a great asset to the team next year. LARRY DUNN Larry, another sophomore, played varsity ball. He wasn't too large in size but he struggled with the best opponents. He is looking forward to a successful season next year. FRANK ESTOCK Although Frank isn't the largest boy on the team, he is one of the hardest playing and most spirited ones. Frank was looked up to and well respected by all. JIM FOLEY Jim played a great deal at tackle and should be an asset to the next year's team. This was his first letter at football and we hope to see him earn another. LARRY GRIMES Larry did a fine job of taking over when a boy in the backfield was injured. Don't get me wrong, his spirit, workmanship, loyalty, and personality are assets to any team. He will be one of the best players on next year's team. STEVE GRITTEN Steve did a fine job at tackle. He was hard to move on defense and very valuable in the middle of the line. GERALD HALL One of the biggest boys on the team, Gerald did a fine job at tackle. He will be back next year and we expect a lot from him. ROGER KOONTZ Even though Roger has a high scholastic rating, he was also one of the hardest working players on team. Roger was a big asset to the team. STEVE KOONTZ Steve turned in a fine job in the backfield this year. One of the fastest men on the squad, he made several long runs this year and we want to see more next year. RODNEY WONDERLIN Rodney was one of the smallest members of the varsity squad. What he lacked in weight he made up for in spirit and speed. He was trying and doing his best all the time. .TERRY MILLER Alghough .Terry didn't make the starting eleven, he saw plenty of action as a reliable substitute. This was .T er ry's first year at varsity football and he will be greatly missed next year. ALLEN STRINGFELLOW Allen played end this season to earn his second letter. Allen has another year left and should be a great help next year as he was this year. DAVE PERRY Dave was a great help to the team at guard. He was fast enough to get down field and deliver fine blocks. Keep up the good work, Dave! LARRY MARTOGLIO Lum did a fine job as a substitute in the line, filling in wherever he was needed. This was his first letter. CLIFFORD OLIVER Although plagued by injuries Clifford did a fine job in the backfield. This was his second letter. We hope he has less injuries next year. .TULIAN STONE Julian gave a fine performance this year at guard. He should be a great benefit to the team in future years. 1 I xx Q 1 L.: ii .f I- si .- I' f pl O' Ita -- '-I Xffys. ,A, J 1'-SU life -.A LIN BOB ANDREWS FOOTBALL SEASON FEATURES LONG PASSES Oakwood, under the direction of a new coach, Mr. Hobick, who is an alumnus of Oakwood High School, finished the season with a fine record. They started off the season with a 13-O win over West- ville on the Oakwood football field. The Comets had possession of the ball most of the game, with Bob Denhart scoring both touchdowns. Oakwood displayed a fine passing attack mixed with fine run- ning to defeat Paxton 18-0. Roger Koontz scored on a pass from Bob Denhartg Dick Denhart onapass from Steve Koontzg Steve Gritten when he fell on a fumble in the Paxton end zone. On September 27, our Comets lost to Gibson City on their field. Although the boys fought valiently, the over-powering weight of their opponents told in the final score which was 47 -0.
