Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1957 volume:

Foreword As we look out into the world, we see many new hopes and new dreams. We realize, that soon, we are to leave Oakwood High School. It is now the time for our yearbook. We hope that you will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed giving it to you. May many happy memories come to you who leaf through the pages of this book. May our work not be in vain. We give to you our book.......................The 1957 Acorn. THE 1957 ACORN ANNUAL STAFF Editor...................................................... Associate Editor............................................ Business Manager............................................ Advertising Manager ........................................ Chief Reporter.............................................. Sharron Dalle Kay Schonians , Kay Fourez , . Sue Divan Kay Maxwell Photographer Judy Bell To A Real Nice Guy The fellow we are dedicating our 1957 Acorn to is as well-known as the tradition to dedicate our yearbook. During his four years at O.T.H.S. he has become well-liked and respected by everyone. Mr. Boyer, who teaches Shop, Mechanical Drawing, and Industrial Arts, you would think would be better known by boys but his friendliness and sense of humor make him known to all. It would take a book to write all of the many things he has done for us and to tell how much we appreciate him. Since that is impossible we will try and sum up our “thanks” in a few words, “He’s a real nice guy!” We Dedicate Our Yearbook To Mr. Forrest Boyer The Oakwood Township High School building was dedicated on Friday, April 27, 1917, at which time there were exercises and speaking. The school has been fully accredited by the proper authorities of the State of Illinois. Favored as it is by abundant resources, a beautiful and well constructed building, a location accessible to all, and a spirit of genuine friendship among members of the board, parents, teachers and students, the school promises to be one of the leading educational institutions in the state. Acorn Staff 1917 A gymnasium is being added to the original building tills year, 1936, at the approximate cost of $54,000. It is to provide a playing floor of eighty-five feet by forty-five feet, with a seating capacity of seven hundred fifty, and a stage opposite the bleachers. Locker rooms for sports and physical education are located under the stage. On the north side, under the bleachers, the Home Economics Department is located. The gymnasium is to be connected to the main building by a corridor, which will be the main entrance to the building. The new project will not only help the crowded conditions, but will also provide a meeting place for the people of the community. Acorn Staff 1936 We are sorry to see the original building destroyed, but happy to see it replaced by a new and more spacious one. The old building will be remembered only by pictures, but what was accomplished within the walls will live on, along with memories of the days spent in classrooms, study halls and participation in school activities. THE NEW AND Everyone should be proud of the beautiful new building. Going to school in it will seem almost like fun after the crowded conditions of the past two years. Even the graduating seniors will agree it has been worth all the sacrifices. Studying will be much easier without the disturbing sounds from the Physical Education Department or the class in the next room. The new cafeteria will be very popular after two years of eating cold lunches. The board and the faculty have worked hard to make this a modern and efficient school building. They have succeeded in obtaining one of the finest, most modem structures in the state. The first students in it would do well to live up to the high standards set by this new building. Construction began on this building in the spring of 1956. It should be entirely completed by the beginning of school in the fall of 1957. It is a modern, one-story brick structure with twelve classrooms, a library, a cafeteria-study hall combination, and a band room over-looking the gymnasium. The building is designed to accommodate 450 students, the estimated enrollment in 1962. It was built at the cost of $450, 000. 00. NEW BUILDING PRESENTS PROBLEMS Raymond Van Buskirk Cletis Zigler Clarence Oakwood Dorothy Dalbey A board of education is a group of citizens who possess ability, common sense, vision and courage and who are willing to give their time and talents to the betterment of their community and state. They expect no pay other than the appreciation of the people whom they serve and this they try to earn. The Oakwood Township High School Board is one that deserves and has the appreciation of the people and the staff alike. Each member has been both regular in attendance and cheerful during the frequent and lengthy meetings of the past two years. As a result the problems that came of building on the site of a school that was in session have had a prompt and intelligent solution. The community will soon have a new building without having been forced to scatter its students among the schools of our neighbors. The Cornerstone is in place. Our Principal , Mr. Koontz To the Faculty and Students: The classes of 1956 and 1957 and the under graduates and staff will never forget the past two years. Then, we accomplished much with but little to work in or with. We kept our identity as a student body, we carried on a class program, and a program of activities despite the loss of our main building. Think as you examine this book, of thenarrow doors, the study hall on the gym stage, and the outdoor corridors to classes. Recall the co-operation and efforts of us all to get along with what we had. The spirit that enabled our forefathers to endure hardship amidst plans for better days isn’t dead. It is a part of our heritage that still lives. Congratulations to all and the best of wishes. It has been a privilege to work with you. Cordially yours. KERMIT RADLOFF Biology Driver Training Coach Eastern Illinois State College, B.S. We soon got into the scheme of tilings, however, being initiated, and providing many laughs for the upper-classmen. There was the initiation party, and our return party for the sophomores. We elected as our candidate for “Miss Victory Sue Divan. And so, our first year was gone, and our sophomore year was upon us. This, our second year, brought us honors. As our candidates for Carnival King and Queen, we elected Tom Perry and Nancy Goodwin. The class we very proud when they were both crowned King and Queen. Our candiate for “Miss Victory” was Jeanie Brunson. We very obligingly initiated the freshmen and attended their return party. And before we knew it, another year had passed. Our Junior year brought responsibilities. The class was proud to present the Junior play to a very large audience. It was an unusual presentation, The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners. The play, our successful magazine sale, and our concessions throughout the year provided funds for the Junior-Senior Prom which was held at the Harrison Pard Clubhouse in Danville. Our candidate for “Miss Victory was Judy Bell, and the class was proud to see her win the title. Finally, with these active years behind us, we obtained the name of “Seniors,” for some, a time of celebration, for a few, a day of regret. All four years we have been well-represented in sports. Our lettermen include Tom Perry, Don Williams, Gerry Martoglio, Ben Leonard, Bill Wonderlin, Larry Cox, Wayne Sexton, Larry McCord. Ed Tellier, Don Davis, Dick Estock, Dick Hardesty, Frank Griffin, Dave Miller, Perry Dean Blew, and Arthur Penrod. Cheerleading letters were presented to four Senior girls, Donna Douglass, Judy Bell, Sharron Dalle, and Sue Divan. We were again proud to see our candidate, Donna Douglass, Crowned Miss Victory” of 1957. Now all the class members are looking forward to the Senior trip, which will culminate our activities here at Oakwood. Then, of course, comes that evening in spring. Graduation, when the members of the Class of 1957 will say good-bye to classmates, and to OTHS. JUNIORS HAVE A SUCCESSFUL YEAR We Juniors entered our third year of High School with an enrollment of 65. We have passed .he half-way mark and are proud to be called •‘Upper-Classmen.” Our year was high-lighted by many events. First was the ordering of our class rings. Second was the annual magazine sale which netted approximately $460. Next was our Junior Play, “Mr. Co-ed, a hilarious comedy-farce, in three acts. We were happy to have Junior, Lorin Kenney, as the leading character. The magazine sale and the class play helped to finance the Junior Senior Prom. Shirley Vinson represented us as queen candidate for Homecoming and Kay Schonians was elected varsity cheerleader for her second year. We were really enjoying the thought of initiation. Next we were all looking forward to the Homecoming Dance, and as our candidate we chose Mary Ann Abbott. We were glad to have two of our class members elected as Reserve Cheerleaders. This is Mary Jo Corn’s second year and Judy Jenkin’s first year. Among our class members, many took part in athletics and class plays. Sharon Cromwell represented our class at the Speech Contest. We enjoyed many good times with the Freshman Class. It is a good feeling to know that next fall we will be called “Upper Classmen!” Jack Richardson, President Lorena Divan, Vice-President Tom Stevens, Secretary Mary Jo Corn, Treasurer Mary Ann Abbott Betty Adams Don Albert Dick Arnold Gerald Barnes Jim Bensyl Pat Bloomfield Marilyn Boots Larry Brown Sharon Buck Anne Butler Carol Cessna Dick Cole Sharon Cromwell Lester Cundiff Elaine Dodson Dennis Duden Pat Eldridge Judi Flannery Jim Foley Sharon Foley Barbara Fourez Shirley Glines Jackie Goble Nora Grant Imagene Greer Larry Grimes Walter Grimes Judy Grimm Steve Gritten Linda Hancock Vera Hawkins Judy Hill Dean Holycross Dave Jeffers Judy Jenkins Dale Jennings Lonnie Johnson Stanley Juvinall Steve Koontz Michael Largent Ella Miles Judy Miller Ronnie Minyard Sarah Musson Kay Nichols Sandra Oak wood Clifford Peak Eugene Penrod Dave Perry Carol Peugh Geneva Pouilliard Warren Rasberry Ronald Ratliff Patricia Richardson Pat Saunders Bonnie Schmidt Sandra Sharp Darla Shelton Fran Showalter Carolyn Sperry Allen Stringfellow Mary Stringfield Andy Tellier Ronnie Wolfe Carlene Wright Larry Wright Don Wynn Joan Wynn Donna Youmans Larry Zigler Phyllis Zimmerman FRESHMEN ENTER INSTITUTION OF KNOWLEDGE Some 89, frightened but happy, freshmen enrolled at O.T.H.S. last August. We started regular classes, at least most of us did, if we could find our classrooms amid the construction of a new building. We found our teachers and principal to be very patient and understanding which helped us to make a fine start towards our future at O.T.H.S. On initiation day we earned our name of Greenies.” We entertained the student body by showing our latest Oakwood High Fashions. We enjoyed several parties with the Sophomore class. Our Homecoming candidate was Virlane Youmans and her runner-up was Janet Terry. Two of our classmates, Karen Maxwell and Janet Terry, were elected as Reserve Cheerleaders. Our class was well represented in athletics. We were fortunate enough to have one boy, Dick Denhart playing on the Varsity Football and Basketball Team. All in all, we agree that the fun we’ve had and knowledge we’ve acquired has made our first year at O.T.H.S. a successful one. Co-Sponsors of the class were Mrs. Fisher and Mr. McNeill Tom Fletcher, President Richard Lane, Vice-President Frank Warner. Donna was crowned ‘‘Miss Victory” at the annual Homecoming Dance by Tom Perry, captain of the football team. The other escorts were Dave Miller, Ben Leonard, Gerald Martoglio and Larry McCord. At halftime the candidates, for the crown were presented to the spectators. Donna is very active in all school activities and this year she has served as president of Student Council. She is known to everyone for her heartwarming smile, and her everlasting friendliness. Dsar Readers: Have you noticed that the staff has returned to the lithographic style in printing the Acorn this year? Other changes include more snapshots, informal pictures and a new interesting method of displaying advertising. Staff members have worked long hours in an effort to present an annual which will recall to the students the highlights of the school year. The reward lies in the valuable knowledge gained through contacts with business, industry, and other organizations. The Acorn staff and advisors appreciate the interest and cooperation shown by other students in sharing snapshots and the faculty in rearranging their schedules to permit students to participate. Yours truly. FOOTBALL SEASON FEATURES LONG RUNS Oakwood, under the direction of a new coach, Mr. Goodrich, who is an alumni of Oakwood High School, finished the season with a 5-3 record. They started off the season with a 6-0 win over Westville. Gerry Martoglio led in yards gained while other halfback Tom Perry was sidelined because of a pre-season injury. Second game of the season the tables were turned against the Comets, as the fell to Hoopeston 6-0. Oakwood, with Tom Perry once again carrying the mail, defeated the Mustangs 33-0. Oir first game with full starting lineup, we triumphed using excellent faking and good blocking. In the following game Gibson City took revenge against Oakwood for last year’s defeat. They hammered the Comets for their second defeat of the season 40-0. Oir Homecoming Game against Unity was lost25-12. The Comets played a terrific game, losing the services temporarily, of three linemen. The game was highlighted by a 70 yard run by Bob Denhart in the first quarter and a 40 yard run on the center keep in the third quarter by Don Williams. Watseka triumphed over our Comets, 14-6 in a game which Oakwood was hindered by the absence of the following injured players: Bill Wonderlin, Gerald Hall, Wayne Sexton, Gerry Martoglio, and Frank Estock. The Comet’s touchdown came after Watseka had scored. Tom Perry, with the help of some fine blocking, broke loose around the end for the touchdown. Oakwood faced a team in the following game which had not lost a game in a series of 23 starts. With short runs and a hard charging line the Comets fought Areola to a 13-7 win. The last touchdown coming in the final minutes of the game. In the final contest of the season Oakwood lost in an outstanding game against the Rantoul Eagles. Their longest gains came on passes. Three of these passes were called back and consequently changed the outcome of the game from a win to a loss for the Comets. The following were selected as the top three tacklers and top three yard gainers for the 1956 football season. TACKLES: Bob Bolton - 68, Bob Denhart - 45, Dick Estock - 41. YARDS GAINED: Tom Perry - 473, Bob Denhart - 290, Gerry Martoglio - 250. The reserve unit of the Comets finished the season with a 1-4 record. Although they were small they made up for it with aggressiveness, and initiative.
