I was smiling and the smile busted.” School Board Formulates Policy Many people probably wonder just what is the job of a school board. Our school board is composed of seven members elected by the people of Oakwood Township. Its members meet once each month and in special meetings. Some of the responsibilities of the school board are: to help the school administrator in setting up the budget for the school year; to participate in the election of the school staff; to help evaluate the curriculum of the school. This year the school offers a special salute to Dr. O. W. Michael, retiring president of the school board. Members of the school board are: Seated—Dorothy Dalbey, secretary; Wayne Koontz, principal; Wesley Condon, Roy Eichorst. Standing—Glen Doney, Ernest Seymour, Joe Davis, Cletis Zeigler. Pictured in photograph on wall—Dr. O. W. Michael, president. Administrative Responsibility Mr. Koontz, as administrative head of the school, has many responsibilities which most people do not realize. His duties include making recommendations to the school board for the hiring of the school staff. He is also responsible for arranging the class schedule, setting up bus runs, dealing with those students who try to drop out of school and deciding whether or not to operate school during bad weather. Maintenance Wondermen Our school is fortunate in having a cooperative, competent maintenance staff to drive the busses, make necessary repairs, and perform all those tasks related to maintaining a presentable school building. This past school year has taxed the energy of the maintenance staff to capacity—roads have been a menace all winter and extremely cold weather has meant extra hours in keeping school at a normal temperature. Our entire staff exhibit personalities which help make for a pleasant atmosphere around our school. Members of our maintenance staff are, left to right: Wilson Hazel-baker, Woody Richardson. Hershall McPherson, Dale Myers and Layton Liggett. ‘1 itflvnm. .d-navety. IC S V prrt£ l ------ m data, Obzt -mei-id! Senior Class Poem It is with sorrow and regret that we must say “goodbye” To our good friends and teachers who remain at Oakwood High. They have helped us in time of trouble and in time of distress, They have made the Oakwood High School, the school that we love best. To our principal, Mr. Koontz, who performed a task so great, We extend a hand of thanks for the guidance of our fate. His secretary, Mrs. Cannon, has done a fine job, as well. We congratulate you both, and we think that you are swell. Here’s a toast to our teachers, who, we think, are grand. They’ve taught us to think, and to understand. They’ve lengthened our memories, they’ve broadened our minds. They’ve deepened our wisdom by work of all kinds. Three cheers! For the Juniors who never give in, With their initiative, they’re bound to win. They’ve fought three years, our honored title to gain, At last we surrender, and give them our name. SENIOR. Hail! To the Sophomores, who are now growing older. As they advance in life, they’re becoming much bolder. They’re no longer bashful, nor are they afraid, By these quick-witted Sophomores, every trick has been played. The Freshmen are no longer bashful, nor are they shy, But they still answer questions with a grunt for reply. However, they’re good sports, for they never complain, Although they don’t like their so called name. GREENIES. Coach Wiltsie was excellent, his team was swell. On the whole, the football boys did very well. Mr. Bess did his duty, he brought his team through. The basketball boys did a good job too. In closing this poem there’s little to say. But here’s one message we’d like to convey. “To all of you, from all of us, Here’s the best of luck and happiness.” GLAD TO BE GOING We’ve crossed another milestone, which once stood in our way. And it makes us very happy to be able to say, “Good luck to you, and farewell to all. We’ll not be back when school starts next fall ” As a closing word we’d like to say, Of course, in a humorous and jokingly way, “We now feel free, we’ve served our time.” At least this fits the occasion, and makes a rhyme. Seniors Drop Anchor At last the Seniors have reached their port—graduation. As they lay anchor they leave behind them all the good times which occur on the high seas of education. Many times the sailing has been rough but 52 of the starting 71 have reached the long awaited harbor safely. The Senior Class members have been active in all school activities, including sports, dramatics and music. All through their high school career they have performed the usual duties required of students. One of the outstanding events of the year was the Senior Class play, “You Can’t Take it With You,” under the direction of Mr. Ennis. This play was a heart-warming comedy which proved that having money wasn’t the only important thing in life. The Seniors are planning on taking a trip but at the time of this writing (April 25, 1952) they had not arrived at a definite conclusion. Here’s wishing that there is good sailing ahead for each member of the Class “52.” SENIOR OFFICERS JOAN RENFER Charm School 1, 2; Dramatics 1, 2, 3, 4; Student Council 2, 3; Glee Club 1, 2, 3; Boys’ Glee Club, pianist 3; Mixed Chorus 3; Music Contest 1, 2, 3, 4; Oak News Staff 4; Service Club 3; Annual Staff 3; Custer’s Last Stand 3; Class President 4. Each class is represented with four of its members, plus the officers coming from the Junior and Senior classes, with a previous years experience. With Donna Hobick as “Miss Victory,” the annual Homecoming Dance was held October 26, after the Homecoming Football Game. A pep-program was held earlier in the afternoon in which the students really showed the team that they were behind them. At Christmas time, the usual custom of having a Christmas party was followed. A large beautiful tree with all the trimmings, brightened up the Reading Center. Because many felt that the various “concessions” such as Cokes and candy, were unfairly divided, an Economic Bill on Concessions was drawn up. It is believed that monev will now be more fairly distributed among the organizations according to need. An Easter Program with Rev. R. L. Maase speaking was appreciated by the students on April 7 during third hour. Everybody had a lot of fun on Student Government Day, as several students shouldered the responsibilities of “making things go.” To top off the term, an Acrobatic Troupe presented an hour program in a special assembly. “O” CLUB IMPROVES ATHLETIC FACILITIES “O” Club includes boys who have earned a letter in football, basketball or track. Manager letter winners are also eligible. Most of our money comes from selling popcorn at football and basketball games. With this money we have bought new football suits, basketball jerseys and track uniforms. We also helped buy outfits for the cheerleaders. Our project for this year was the purchasing of a whirlpool bath, which is used as a massager and may be used in giving treatment for sprained ankles, bruises and other muscle injuries. It can also be used for treating polio victims. Our project for next year is to buy a Crowther charging machine. This is used in football to help achieve coordination and to get players in better condition. KITCHEN HELP Did you ever think what would happen if there were no one to help Mrs. Newtson in the daily chores of preparing lunch for about 100 hungry students? EFFICIENT LIBRARIANS This year the library has been very efficiently organized. This is because most of the librarians have been competent and responsible in carrying out their jobs. Besides serving faithfully in the library, the librarians have also enjoyed several social occasions—hay ride in October, skate in Danville, and a spring picnic. Alert reporters, efficient editors, and capable advisers have made this success possible. Publications were put out monthly with Typing II helping with the production. News staff is to be commended for its much improved work. ANNUAL STAFF Here is a note of hearty gratitude to the Annual staff. May the annual always continue to stand for the memories of school. MUSIC DEPARTMENT STRIVES FOR GREATER APPRECIATION AND PARTICIPATION All sections of the Music department took part in the annual music festival on April 25 in the O. T. H. S. gym. The band, girls’ chorus and mixed chorus participated in the music contest at Bradley, returning with their share of the honors. In addition, more soloists and ensembles entered than ever before and brought back honors for themselves, the music department and the school. Musical and artistic growth and appreciation is the goal of the music department. Stress is placed on gaining insight into and an understanding of finer music. These goals are achieved by listening to good music, performing works of the great masters and participating actively in musical groups. By no means, however, is the achievement of these goals an end in itself. The band played rousing marches and “pep” tunes at football and basketball games. The band also participated in the Pancake Festival parade at Villa Grove, Illinois. The Oakwood Amazons have done well in the 1951-52 year. The basketball tournament was a success; everyone turned out and played hard for their class team. The Seniors won first place for the third consecutive time. Some of the G. A. A. activities have been archery, basketball, swimming and softball. Our adviser, Mrs. Wilson, due to her husband’s graduation, left us near the beginning of the second semester. The new teacher, Miss Herron, took her position. G. A. A. BAND Kneeling, left to right—Marilyn Hill, Francis Lomax, Lena Crawford, Wilma Wonderlin, Margie Ellis, Joan Stine, Anita Hart. F. H. A. The annual initiation party for the new members of F. H. A. was held in the high school gym with a chili supper for the new and old members in the Home Ec. room. Also the F. H. A. sponsored the F. F. A. and F. H. A. party and the Mother and Daughter Banquet. As a project this year the F. H. A. purchased a new automatic washing machine for the school. Louise Knight was elected president of Section 15 at the spring rally. F. F. A. ROUNDUP The officers for the past year were : Pat Wolfe, president; Charles Trimble, vice-president; Bill Wilson, reporter; Tom Richter, secretary; and Bill Fourez, treasurer. In June our officers attended the Illinois State F. F. A. convention at the University of Illinois. Merle Myers received the State Farmer Degree and our chapter was awarded a plaque for having the best program of work in Section 18. Tom Hawkins, an O. T. H. S. graduate in 1951. received the American Farmer Degree at Kansas City, Missouri, in October. This is the highest degree that can be earned by an F. F. A. member. At the F. F. A. fair in Danville our chapter had the most swine entries of any chapters in this section. To raise money for our chapter activities, the members picked up eight tons of scrap iron. Thirty-three boys and three dads attended the International Livestock Show at Chicago last November. Social activities included : Harvest Moon Ball in the O. T. H. S. gym on February 9. 1952. fried chicken supper near the opening of school and an annual potluck supper at which the F. F. A. explains its purposes and program to parents and friends. The Oakwood chapter also belongs to the Junior Production Credit Association—and is the only chapter in the state which does so. This organization permits F. F. A. members to borrow money needed to finance projects. The chapter has increased its number of hogs to four. These hogs are raised by members on a share basis. SPEECH CONTESTS Participants selected for the 1952 district speech contest were as follows: Gay Hunter, comedy prose reading; Donald Dale, original oration; Mary Baird, original monologue; Anita Hart, radio speaking; Carolyn Freeman, extemporaneous verse reading; Lonita Fisk, serious play reading; Lena Crawford, extemporaneous speaking; and Joan Miller, oratorical declamation. Of those selected, Joan and Lena were unable to participate because of illness. Several of these were ranked with the top few in their groups, but the highest honor carried back to O. T. H. S was Gay Hunter’s second place award entitling her to enter the sectional contest at Casey on March 29. F. H. A.
