CHOOSE The hand of fafe has drawn aside The curfain of fomorrow. If shows fo us fhe pafhs so wide Of laughfer, love, and sorrow. The sfraighf and narrow pafh, ahead if lies Wifh shining glories from fhe loffy skies Reflecfed from our God above. This is fhe pafh for all desires Of divine, comforfing words of love. There fo fhe leff a sfeep, sfeep frail O'erhung wifh dreary clouds. Those who fread fhis pafh will fail To find fheir alms among fhe shrouds Of gloom and blackesf nighf. There fo fhe righf are shorf, shorf miles For fhose who sacrifice fheir lives, Abdicafing for fhe ones fo come From fhe high and mighfy Kingdom Of our God on high. Yef of fhese fhree we all may choose, Whefher we wish fo win or lose The laurels of good, or bonds of hafe: The realms below, fhe golden gafe: The pafhs so sfraighf, The pafhs so sfeep: The pafhs of deafh-efernal sleep. We can live, laugh, and love Wifh glories from our God above lf fhe firsf pafh we choose fo follow. So, make your choice for once and all, Disperse from all fhe sfrife and sorrow And fake your sfand for fomorrow. Georgeffa Mann. CLASS SONG Anne Munger Nina Palmer Through long years of efforf we've friendshipped fogefher And pranks provoked laughfer anew. Unconsciously Oakwood's ideals have been forging A spirif bofh fempered and frue. The world and ifs promise lie waifing before us, And whafe'er fhe fufure may hold, The Oakwood of yore we always will cherish ln fhe ranks of alumni enrolled. PLEDGE: Oh Oakwood High, we make our pledge fo fhee: We'll be faifhful and frue fo fhe Gold and Bluel
TELL ME WHY THE IVY TWINES llvy Oralionl Recenlly a modern aulhor said, Tradilion should be a guide, nol a iaiIor. ll occurred lo me lhal we have allowed lhe planling ol lhe ivy lo become a habil wilh iailor inslincls. Each succeeding June brings wilh il lhe nalionally lime-honored planling ol lhe ivy. Il appears lo be lhe lhing lo do. ll is unlhinkable nol lo have lhe ivy planling. The press ol lradilional circumslance is whal gives lhe iailor aspecl lo lhis parlicular ceremony. Long ago, when lhe lirsl ivy was planled, somewhere someone musl have had a reason lor making lhis ceremony an inlegral parl ol commencemenl leslivilies.. As lo whal lhal reason was we can now only hazard a guess. I imagine, however, lhal lhe ivy is meanl lo be symbolic ol Youlh's own progress. The soil in which lhe ivy lakes rool is a prepared soil, richly lerlilized. The place selecled lor lhe planling musl be lhe mosl advanlageous lo growlh, accessible lo sun and rain, and prolecled lrom lhe rude elemenls. The cuslomary supporl for lhe ivy's lendrils is a building ol brick or slone in which also have laken rool lradilions made up ol vilal, warm living over a period ol years. So il is wilh us. The soil ol lomorrow inlo which we will be lransplanled has been made lerlile lor our coming by generalions ol men and women whose lives, work, and idealism sland as a Iodeslar for our lulure slriving. Our parenls and leachers have benl every ellorl lo assure our wise seleclion ol lhe college or posilion in which we can besl lunclion according lo our inherenl capabililies. Their advice, based upon malure experience, should prolecl us lrom lhe mislakes loo lrequenll made by unguided young people. Our years ol inlimale living and learning logelher here al Oakwood should be lhal conslanl source ol renewed slrenglh wilhoul which individual success is impossible lo achieve. Lel us lhen relurn in lhoughl lo lirsl beginnings, lhal we may be aware ol lhe deep signilicance lhal lies behind lhis planling ol our ivy. Lel us each pledge our- selves lo live in accordance wilh lhe lwo-lold American ideal ol rich opporlunily lor self-developmenl and service lo olhers. Lel us realize lully lhal America is a nalion ol increasing lradilions which are meanl lo guide, nol lo regimenl our lhoughls or imprison our aclions. Bruce Brower THE PRESIDENT SPEAKS The day ol days lor lhe class ol l938 has linally rolled around. ll is wilh mixed senlimenls ol joy and sadness lhal we graduales view lhis speclacle ol commence- menl. Joy, because il marks lhe lullillmenl ol a very imporlanl slep in our lives. Sadness, because il means lhal, lemporarily al Ieasl, we musl parl lrom lried and lrue friends among our leachers and lellow sludenls. Since lhal lall day lwelve years ago when we began our school careers, some al lhe Shalor collages, and olhers al Harman Avenue, lhere have been many who have joined and olhers who have deparled from our ranks. Our class gradually developed unlil il reached a plane of achievemenl which ils successors will lind dillicull lo reach. This year our illuslrious seniors annexed lhe Monlgomery Counly Scholarship lesls, played maior roles in lhe success ol lhe loolball and baskelball leams, and were oul- slanding in music and lorensic aclivilies. Surely no olher gradualion class can boasl ol such an impressive record in so many dislincl lields. In a few monlhs many ol us will enler schools ol higher learning lo conlinue lhe quesl lor knowledge. Olhers will embark immedialely upon lhe lask of elfecling a livelihood by enlering lhe lield ol business u on gradualion. To each senior, no maller which ol lhese lwo groups he has deciclbd lo join, lhe many valuable lessons experienced al dear old Oakwood will be highly benelicial. Of one lhing we are cerlain: Oakwood High and ils slalf ol oulslanding leachers have done lheir parl lo prepare us lor lhe lrials ahead. The resl is now up lo us. So, in leaving Oakwood, our lhanks and besl wishes go lo lhe enlire lacully. ln like manner, God speed each and every member ol lhe gradualing class ol l938. Charles Whalen, Jr., Presidenl, Class ol l938.
