Educafion for democracy requires emphasis on fhe developmenf of characfer, of righf social ideals and affifudes, even above fhe inculcafion of knowledge. Some one has said fhaf fhe mosf iniquifous and fhe mosf dangerous combinafion in fhe world is a man of cold hearf and a keen mind. Thaf combinafion accounfs for our many selfish, anfi-social acfions. for our rufhless individ- ualism-nof our rugged individualism, for fhaf oughf fo be mainfained. The firsf of fhese is fhe ideal of cifizenship in a democracy. l would have youfh realize fhaf fhere are nof only fhe well known righfs of cifizenship such as freedom of speech, freedom of fhe press, efc., fhaf come wifh American cifizenship, buf fhaf highly imporfanf dufies come also-fhe dufy of vofing, of iury service, of paying iusf and equifable faxes, of parficipafion in public affairs, and greafesf of all, obeying and up- holding laws which have been necessarily enacfed for fhe benefif of all. The second greaf ideal is fhe ideal of folerance-folerance of race, religion, polifics, opinions. Infolerance, which causes us fo form pre-iudgmenfs before we have all fhe facfs, musf be overcome by means of good will. Tolerance is one of fhe cor- nersfones of our republic. lf you doubf if, sfudy fhe colonial hisfory of Maryland and fhe Consfifufion of fhe Unifed Sfafes. The fhird greaf ideal is fhe ideal of service. lvlosf of our economic problems will be solved when we puf fhe service mofive before fhe profif mofive. Our greaf invenfors, scienfisfs, sfafesmen, physicians, minisferial and educafional workers have found a life of service fhe only kind fhaf gives real and lasfing safisfacfion on fhis earfh and fhaf posferify cares fo honor. The fourfh ideal is fhe ideal of fhe dignify and nobilify of creafive labor. A Ufopia in which fhere is a life of ioyful labor for all is a much beffer vision fhan one of idleness. Our presenf life demands fhaf we discipline ourselves for sfeady physical and menfal labor, fhaf we accepf cheerfully some drudgery and monofony, fhaf we apply our minds and bodies fo our daily fasks. The fiffh ideal is marriage and responsible parenfhood. Our young people musl' have fhe opporfunify fo learn fo enfer marriage more deliberafely and more infelli- genfly, upon a firm foundafion of characfer rafher fhan selfishness. A spoiled boy and a spoiled girl can never make a happy marriage. The sixfh and Iasf ideal is an appreciafion of fhe richness and sancfify of life. Wifh fhis ideal funcfioning we place fhe human individual above all else in our social order, and we will nof kill fhirfy-five fhousand and iniure one million wifh fhe aufomo- bile as we did in l93Ll. In conclusion, fhe mosf imporfanf guesfion in our communify, sfafe, and nafional life is: Are we big enough for democracy? Democracy requires of ifs cifizens char- acfer. ideals, knowledge.
