Merely ThaT The parenTs oT said members had decided ThaT iT was Time Tor Their children To learn someThing besides The bad words They picked up doing noThing all day. The members oT This regimenT consisTed OT Blimp Allen. who had been holding down The TorT Tor us Two years already, AlberT BeusT, Libby Flack, Phil Worman, Doris FiTzgibbons, l-lerb Whalen, T-TarrieT CrawTord, Bob Desch. Mary Keller, Bill Anderson, Lib OIT, Fred T-lussey, and Sue SmiThg Miss Smalley was The commanding oTTicer. This year was raTher unevenTTul3 nobody knew much oT any- Thing, excepT ThaT Doris FiTzgibbons had already decided she was going To be a nurse. BUT Time Tlew quickly and we Tound ourselves ready To move ahead wiTh The loss oT liTTle l-lerbie Whalen. The nexT year, Two new soldiers ioined our ranks: These being Fred Barr and DoroThy Coolidge. And Fred was The cuTesT, pudgiesT, liTTle Thing! We rapidly learned all They had To oTTer, and sTill moved on, chalking up anoTher vicTory Tor our- selves aT The same Time. The second grade produced more baTTles Than any year previous or Tollowing. John Pool and Jane STanley appeared on The TronT To learn whaT iT was all abouT. BuT Jane learned more Than her share .... whaT wiTh Phil Worman and Fred Barr con- sTanTly TighTing over her. ThaT was The year Tor real love-aTTairs. Even liTTle Libby Flack had already decided she was going To marry Louie King, and Mary Allen and Billy Swisher held a mosT impressive wedding ceremony under The Trees aT recess. All wenT well unTil Maryls husband Threw her haT in The Tree, Mary Told Mr. ClaggeTT, and ThaT ended ThaT. BuT ThaT all changed. For in The Third grade we added Dave Bill, Isabel Frank, Joe Chamberlain, and ThaT vampire, B. Anne WebsTer. The oTher girls Took a back seaT Tor a while, and Romeo Worman was compleTely overcome by This liTTle WebsTer girl's charms-and conTinued To be Tor several years. Pease CrawTord had already Taken up her noTe-wriTing, and proceeded To geT several people in a nice mess. While The boys were oTherwise occupied, The girls were held spell- bound lisTening To Lib OlT's hair-raising Tales abouT how someone locked her in The cellar and The worms aTe her up. AT The beginning oT The TourTh baTTle, Norman WallingTord, Virginia l-luckins, l-lugh Evans, Tom T-lodgson, and T-Tomer MarTin enlisTed. The only Thing we remem- ber oT ThaT year was l-lugh Bean's new wrisT waTch, which he wouldn'T allow us To TorgeT. We also Took up playing Maggie , or whaTever ThaT game was called, aT recess. You know, where The boys chased The girls all around, calling Them Maggie . Very rornanTicl Page TwcnTy N
