ir if mm Wm The Message of The SuperinTendenT The school year I933-T934 may well be called recovery year in educaTion Tor Oakwood. IT is unTorTunaTe ThaT This is noT True Tor many oTher disTricTs in The naTion and ThaT a real naTional emergency exisTs in educaTion wiTh many schools closing, oThers wifh Terms greaTly shorTened, and many Teachers unpaid Tor work already done. While we have noT been able To go back To The Ten monThs' Term, we have been able To meeT The sTandard reguiremenT oT a nine monThs' Term esTablished by The NorTh CenTral AssociaTion oT Colleges and Secondary Schools. Our Term oT eighT monThs and one week during T932-I933 was The shorTesT Term in The hisTory oT The Schools. So we are very glad To achieve a nine monThs' Term. Improved Tax paymenTs and good managemenT on The parT oT our Board oT EducaTion are responsible Tor our TorTunaTe siTuaTion. The mosT imporTanT work oT The school, The developmenT oT knowledge and virs Tue, has made sTeady progress. Our sTudenTs have been earnesT and indusTrious, have shown a high sense oT honor and inTegriTy, and have given conTinual evidence oT good conducT and growing ciTizenship. The school raTings on gualiTies oT personaliTy such as personal appearance, courTesy, unselhshness, honesTy, reliabiliTy, loyalTy, accuracy, Thoroughness, and openmindedness indicaTe ThaT our sTudenT body sTands high in These essenTial virTues. On accounT oT our sTudenTs being sTrongly indiviclualisTic in ThoughT and acTion, greaTer eT'TorTs To develop Them in cooperaTive acTion and in school spiriT are necessary. Their criTicisms oT Themselves show This To be True. The besT way To iudge a school is To observe iTs graduafes. We are very willing To have our school iudged in ThaT way. NOT a week has gone by in The pasT year wiThouT some word oT an honor won by a graduaTe oT Oakwood High School. In col- lege and in indusTry, our graduaTes are acguiTTing Themselves splendidly. A very inTeresTing developmenT oT The year was The AdulT School. FourTeen classes, enrolling Tour hundred and TiTTy-six adulTs, parTicipaTing in subiecTs and acTivi- Ties mainly on The college level, were led by members oT our TaculTy, Since There is a general accepTance now ThaT educaTion begins wiTh The child aT an early age and goes on Through elemenTary school, high school, college, and inTo adulT liTe as long as There are problems To be meT and subiecTs oT inTeresT To be enjoyed. adulT educaTion is very likely To become permamenT. The parenTs and ciTizens individually and Through The ParenT-Teacher AssociaTion have given splendid cooperaTion during The year. No school could have beTTer com- muniTy supporT Than ours. The Board oT EducaTion, on accounT oT many problems oT adminisTraTion, main- Tenance, and Tinance, have given more oT Their Time This year To The school Than ever beTore. As yeT, also, There has been no NRA. code ThaT shorTens The working hours oT our TaculTy. The amounT oT work has increased due To reducTion in sTaTT and in new duTies and services rendered. BuT l am sure ThaT we have appreciaTed our oppor- TuniTy To work wiTh boys and girls and wiTh adulTs who, we hope, will help To bring us inTo a new world oT Tiner Thinking and oT more abundanT living. fx.
