olfers Master The Green The golf team at Oakville is not one of the better known teams, but it is certainly one of our most victorious teams. Even though golf is knovm as an individual sport, it does take more than one person to win a match. Team effort was the main rea- son we won our matches. Our wins didn't rely on stnctly one person to do all the work, ex- claimed Bret Jansen. This year's team had its fair share of talented and exper- ienced players. We have a good, young team this year, and it looks like we'll do even better next year, speculated Curt Wi- chem and Brett Donner. Each ? Kellams, N. Cimo, K. Knopf, R. Dis- trict singles champion Howard Jarvis placed first by defeating teammate Mathias Saving, who secured the second place medal. The Tigers were represented on the doubles court by the combi- nation of Norm Wendl and Jamie Moeller who took the doubles second place finish. Being in existence for only two years did not bother the Tigers. They proved to the district that experience does not necessarily build strength. l think we really did more than what was expect- ed of us, we only lost two match- es, and that was against Ladue 226 - Boys Tennis I l'm glad we play such a tough . schedule, then we really get a chance to find out how good we are. and Clayton, said Miguel Labin. These teams are just a small taste of what the Tigers took on. I'm glad we play such a tough schedule, then we really get a chance to find out how good we really are, replied junior Don Leupold. The height of the Tigers season came late, as they tied a state record by qualifying three entries to the State Tournament. How- ard Jarvis reached the quarterfi- nals at State, eventually losing to the retuming state champion. There wasn't anything else we could have done: l was really proud, said Jarvis, who was later named a Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete for the 1986-87 school year. W Howard Jarvis follows through on his left- handed foreamr shot during a match.
