His record is very impressive. Mr. Spitz re- ceived his Bachelor of Arts degree at Fordham University in New York, and his Master's degree at Gonzaga Univer- sity in Spokane, and attended St. Mary's College and St. Joseph's Normal, both in New York, the University of Washington at Seattle, and Webster Business College in San Rafael, California. In addition to this, before coming to Oakville, he had taught in New York City, Van- couver, British Columbia, Butte, Montana, Los Angeles, California, and Lebam, Washington. These positions re- present an aggregate total of nineteen years experience. Since coming to Oakville, Mr. Spitz has crea- ted a wholesome, co-operative attitude of culture and study in each student. This attitude has been crystallized in an unprece- dented school spirit and pride. Aside from the myriad duties of his superinten dent's position, Mr. Spitz doubles as instrumental music instructor, and teaches algebra and shorthand courses. Through mud and snow, rain and sleet, these four men, Gust Berg, Pete Ames, Harry Gibson, end Bud litchell, make their rounds twice a day, five days a week, thirty-six weeks a yenr. Gust and Bud each take forty minutes to make their pickups on the Gibson Creek and Reservation runs re- spectively, Harry Gibson makes his, Gedarville, in an hour, and Pete Ames, with the longest run, Gerrard Creek, drives for an hour and thirty-five minutes. Gust and Mud don't stop with taking school children to school--they carry a school teacner apiece on their buses. Mesdames Carlson and Wolf, both grede teachers, avail them- selves of this convenience every morning to get to their desks, and every evening to get beck to the peace and quiet of their homes. He was replaced by Ed Damitio. J E E .J 9 J P E 2 F 3 E 'i Q E E E :ummm- -L :'::,,. :da-'FZ-231v1mm.wlZ. . ' Mr. R. H. Hall ' Mr. Hall, grade school prin- cipal, has been with the Oak- ville school district twenty- three years. In 1921, when OHS was brand new, he taught manual training and coached the high school athletic teams. The next year, Rochester built a new high school, so he moved to Rochest- er. He stayed three years, de- cided Oakville was best, and came back. The same year, he married Mrs. Hall, who was teaching at the grade school here. he taught for ten more years in the high school, and, in 1935, signed for the princi- palship of the Oakville Grade School, where he still carries on his good work. Athletics has been one of Mr. Hall's great interests, stemming from his coaching years in OHS. These years of experience have made him invaluable in drilling the fundamentals of athletics into the grade boys, finally re- sulting in championship high school teams. His position is one of great responsibility, and he carries it well. Mr. Amidon, State College of Pennsylvania graduate who roll- ed into Oakville in 1935, doub- les as the high school handy man. For twelve years, when a job in classroom or in shop, on football field or on stage, has come up, the cry has been, uSee Mr. Amidon about itln Down through the years, he has supervised the surfacing of the football field with clay, constructed baseball diamond backstops, made the structural plans for the bus garage, con- verted the dressing room, and built much of the furniture in the school. Each year he takes charge of stage settings for the Junior and Senior class plays, and puts up the football goal posts. All this on top of running three good ag classes. Nhat's for the future? Well, Mr. Amidon, an American Legion affiliate, expects to get Legion backing on plans for tennis and golf courses. lt's going to be a lot of work building a golf and tennis court, starting from scratch, but he's used to that! 5 2 5 I za 'Z if E 2 L 5 5 E H V. Through his little worried about labors, we go to school in warmth and in clean surroundings. Ever since l9L3, when he took over the janitor's posi- tion, he has kept up steam in the heating system week after week and swept the classrooms and corridors daily. His philosophical pessimism and spontaneous humor have be- come an integral part of life in Oakville High. Honors to a good man! Gust has driven n schoolous amd jsnitored at the greie school for six years. Self-educated ty exhaustive reading on myriad subjects, his hooty is stamp collectinb. he tekes an active interest in the education oi ooth graze and high school students. Whenever bus transportation to athletic contests at other schools is needed, Gust cone tributes his driving services often at the expense or com- pleting his work at the grade school in the wee hours of the night. This paper, the nPow Wow', was mimeographed and issued free of charge under the National Youth Administration. The 'Pow Wown was similiar to the 1948 'Acorn News' in that they both included local as well as school news. The 'Acorn Newsn, however, has been a journalism class project from the beginning of the school term. The paper has been under the advisorship of Mrs. Alvin Parks since early September. Before the advisor was assigned, the class had elected a tenative staff which later came to form the main divisions for the re- gular staff. The new staff, elected and appointed, were: Editor, James Lonborg, Assistant Editor, Bob Arney, Business Manager, Bob Grace, Assistant Business Manager, Bob Henry, School News, Dale Lonborg, Local News, Celia La Mitchell, Art Editor, Joe Menish. Reporters were: Doris Eylenfeldt, Gloria Rector, Anna Beckwith, Jo Ann Jull Everett Logan, Leonard La Branche, Dale Klatush, Kenneth Witt, Harold Secena. after a short deliberation the class made an unanimous decision to name the paper the Nacorn Newsn. The paramount objective of the NAcorn Newsn was to Branche, Social News, Carol Gosnell, sports Editor, LeRoy1gQg bring to as many people as possible all the news from in- side as well as outside of the schools. It has served a greater purpose for the members of the journalism class by broadening their knowledge in fields of journalism and business. Each of the students has learned by doing and by working together to realize the goals of accomp- lishment in publishing the successful issues of Nacorn Newsn. Many problems confronted the not too experienced staff. Time was a considerable factor, and the group in securing information, rewriting articles, making master copies, proof-reading, duplicating, assembling, and distributing, were kept Nnip 'n tuckn to get the paper out on deadline. all of this plus classes in journalism and the business end of operations presented many obstacles to overcome. Solving protlems as they worked, the NAcorn News Journalistsu succeeded in getting and keeping happy one hundred and fifty subscribers to the 'Acorn Kewsn. Our biggest project was the preparation and ser- ving of food for one hundred and twenty people at the Athletic Banquet. This was done in coordination with the Girls' Club. We have also been called on to serve lunch for all of the school parties. This practical application of the knowledge acquired in our foods study should be very beneficial to us in future community ac- tivities. Classes taught this year under the Vocational Home Economics plan were for freshman, sophomore and senior girls and for the first time this subject was offered to senior boys. ' The girls really had to Ulook to their laurelsn when the 355, boys' class started food preparation. That most of them LNQ' were real chefs was the sincere conviction of all the gggl students lucky enough to sample their products. The AES Home Economics I class felt their course in breakfast M i and lunch preparation a real challenge to them and most ,pq of these girls have been giving their families a sample jwf of Wwhat we learned in school.W The senior girls spent ,gg some time on nutrition and also enjoyed their unit in fa? family living. All of the girls got much practical ex- Fha perience by taking home projects for the purpose of 1 Q practicing the knowledge learned from their studies in A their own homes. Yes, the home economics room has been a busy place. ghw This is proven not only by the multitude of delicious QNT odors which float upstairs, but also the whir of the ,QVp, sewing machines and the great number oi students who use QNEFM this room for various activities. The l9A7 football season started with great expectations for a championship team, but the old injuries-bugaboo dashed our hopes into the ground. Everett Logan, big center, broke a finger at mid-season, and quarterback LeRoy Mitchell wren- ched his shoulder. Although Harry Secena and Charlie Mellow filled the vacancies ably, the team could not fully recover from the break-up. At the Centralia Football Jamboree, September 13, Coach Mel Lee's gridsters whopped Tenino 6-O in a sixteen minute exhibition ame. Two weeks later, the Acorn six came from behind a lu-2 halftime deficit to win the first league tilt 21-lL at Tenino. A week later, the reserves saw plenty of action when Oakville tromped Rainier LO-13. Then the power- ful Rochester Warriors outplayed the Acorns 18-6. A muddy, hard fought game saw Oakville and Tenino battle to a score- less tie in the next game. ln the major upset of the year, the underdog Rainier Mountaineers sneaked by Oakville 18-13 on a last minute pass interception. Finally, Rochester's southwest champions trounced the weakened Acorns 21-O. Cakville finished in a second-place tie with Tenino. vzfl - G2 5, va. ,.
