This makes him look back over the years and sum up his early years of life, the years that form the character and habits of an individual. Looking back over the years bring memories of times that will long be remembered, some sad and many happy ones. Now let us look back over these years. On August 29, 1947, thirty-five members of the class of '59 started our first year of school. In the original class were: William Joe Archer, Morris Frank Beaman, Linda Blandford, Robert E. Bond, Susan Bond, Judith Clark, Mary Lois Clark, Bobby Decker, Lorna June Dillon, Ronald E. Hanger, Beverly Hartzburg, Don Harvey, Neil Holcomb, Patricia Johnson, William Krueger, Bruce Leak, Bruce Mayall, Marilyn Kay Maynard, Richard Meridath, Greger Mitton, Rita Sue Parr, Rose Marie Ravellette, Vera Richardson, Donald Swayze, Michael Tracy, Patricia Van Antwerp, Leo Whitson, Evelyn Kay Wilson, Karen Wolfe, Max Worley, Harry Yates, Patricia Barmes, David Dennison, Hazel Dennison, and Hugh McKinley. The last four joined the class after Christmas vacation. As the records for our second year have been misplaced, it is difficult for us to know the changes made during our second year. George Arthur joined our class in the second grade. Kay lvers came and left our class in the second year and returned in the third grade. David Gilley also enrolled in our class the third year. An unfortunate flood accident took two members from our class. Jerry Hall drowned in high flood waters and Larry moved away. Leo Whitson left on January 16 to go to school at Booneville. Hazel and David Dennison also moved away this year on February 20. Linda Bland- ford left our class on October 9. On November 20, David Gilley moved away. During our fourth year, Bobby Decker, Harry Yates, Mary Lois and Kenneth Clark withdrew from our class. Those who entered our class were: Margaret Snyder, Jeanette McMillin, Shirley Kennedy, Lucille Archer. Leo Whitson returned to our class this year. Our fifth grade records have also been misplaced. David Gilley left our class in the sixth grade. In the seventh grade there were eleven boys and fourteen girls. George Baxley, Richard Starns, and Judy Purkhiser joined us in the seventh grade. During our second year in junior high school, Judy Purkhiser left while we gained three members: Charles Case, Marian Schutter, and Bill Helderman. Four students entered our class our Freshman year and three of them left the same year. The four were: Larry Entrican, Rosalie Martin, Richard Gardner, and Jim Owens who stayed with us for two more years. Marian Schutter, Don Harvey, and Bill Helderman left us in our Soph- omore year. Lola Bowlin and Arnold Rinsch entered the Sophomores of 56-57. June Dillon and Rose Marie Ravellette left the jolly Juniors of 57-58. The class members of 1959 now include: George Arthur, Frank Beaman, Bob Bond, Bruce DeSchamp, Ronnie Hanger, Neil Holcomb, Kay Ivers, Lola Kehoe, Bruce Leak, Bruce Mayall, Kay Maynard, Jeanette McMillin, Greg Mitton, Janice Morrison, Vera Richardson, Arnold Rinsch, Margaret Snyder, Betty Whitson, Leo Whitson, Kay Wilson, and Karen Wolfe. In our Junior year in high school, our two big events were the class play and the Junior-Senior Reception. The title of our class play was, Grandad Goes Wild. Our sponsors directed the play. We had the Junior-Senior Reception in the Fortnightly at Vincennes. The theme of our prom was, A Hawaiian Cruise. Our sponsors for our Junior year were Mr. Rex May and Miss Jessie Lee Latshaw. Our Senior year, the busiest of all, has been a lot of fun and a lot of work. Our class play this year was, Don't Take My Penny. It was a big success and everyone had a lot of fun. Karen Wolfe brought honor to the class by being elected Queen of our Homecoming, which we won. There are many projects to kepp the seniors busy. As our Senior year draws to a close we will have our class trip and finally our Baccalaureate Services and then Graduation. After Graduation we will leave high school behind, but we will never forget our friends and the memory of life at Oak- town High School. OUR TEACHERS First Grade: Mrs. Helen Ross. I, Lola Kehoe, will my quiet disposition to Beverly McMillin, Kay Maynard CLASS POEM We the class of '59, Will soon be leaving our school behind. lt's been twelve years of work and fun, But twelve good years for everyone. Kay Maynard, the first in our hall of fame Is a girl who is always about the same. There's never a job too large or small, She does her best to please us all. Bruce Leak, the president of our class, Goes with a certain Bruceville lass. He plans to be an engineer, He's sure to make it, I have no fear. Kay Ivers is this girl's name, But I doubt if it will remain the same. For Kay is engaged to a Vincennes boy, We wish her much happiness and joy. Junior Rinsch, who from Freelandville hails ls very good at driving nails. He's helped build houses with his carpentry skill At this he surely fills the bill. Jeanette McMillin along in our line, ls as likeable a girl as you will find. To be an artist is her ambition, We bet she succeeds under any condition. Bob Bond, the boy we call Snake, A barbering course plans to take. He's been the Cassanova of our class, And has had his charm over many a lass. Kay Wilson is known by all, She has dark hair and isn't very tall. She's always good for a laugh or two. And keeps us all from feeling blue. We see a boy in a Chevrolet, He drives this car almost every day. Bruce Mayall is this lad's name, Short and blonde and always the same. Karen Wolfe, the musician of our class, Is a tall, red-headed lass. After high school with her knowledge, She plans to attend a business college. Frank Beaman the next in line, Is full of fun all the time. He likes to play cards, as you can see, A gambler he will surely be. Betty and Leo Whitson are a brother and sister team It isn't very often that this is ever seen. Betty a beautician plans to be, And Leo a card shark, says he. Margaret Snyder can be seen from day to day Working at the local IGA. She's known for her personality wherever she may go And at getting acquainted she isn't very slow Ronnie Hanger is usually happy and gay, Except when teachers get in his way. For hot rods and racing he is a fiend, And at the drag races he can be usually be Vera Richardson the shy one of the class, At eating candy will never be surpassed. She's undecided as to what she will be, So we will all just have to wait and see. And next we see Greg Mitton, by name, Who is remembered for his dancing fame. This boy's one obsession, Is engineering as a profession. Janice Morrison the next one of us, Is quiet and never raises a fuss. And for her future, so we hear, She is looking to nursing as a career. George Arthur, from the farm hails, He's not very big but tough as nails. A barber he is planning to be, We think he'l1 make it, wait and see. Now here's a girl who changed her name, By getting maried it isn't the same. Lola Kehoe at the head of our class, Is very smart and sure to pass. Here I am at the end of the line, And I'm no poet as you will find. I've tried my best to introduce us to you, SEED Mistakes I've made plenty, corrections, few. Neil Holcomb CLASS CLASS FLOWER: Varigated Carnation. CLASS COLORS: Ice Blue and Silver. CLASS SONG: Stardust. MOTTO: Promise little and do much. CLASS PROPHECY One night as I sat watching and studying the stars, a thought came to my mind. I wondered if I could induce the stars to inform me as to the where- abouts and vocations of my High School Classmates of '59. I resolved to try, so I fixed my attention upon a particularly large and bright star and by super concentration I finally persuaded it to treat me with its secrets. The first thing I saw was my old home town. Many changes had taken place since I had last seen it ten years ago. My attention was focused to Kay Maynard who is now an English Pro- fessor at Indiana State Teachers College. Kay had finally achieved her goal for which she had worked so hard for during our high school days. Jeanette McMillin noted for her artistic talent in our high school days was away at the first showing of her latest series of modern art paintings at the Capitoline Gallery in Rome. I was told that Vera Richardson was accompanying her for a long awaited trip abroad. I decided to take a tour of recently completed housing development erected by the Arnold Rinsch Construction Company. I was surprised to find Mrs. Lee Kehoe, the former Lola Bowlin, living in one of the beautiful homes with her husband Lee and their young daughter. While driving through the business district a most unusual building caught my eye. I stopped, out of curosity, to see what it was. Three pros- perous young gentlemen escorted me in. They introduced themselves as Leo Whitson, Ronnie Hanger, and Frank Beaman, three of my former class- mates. They informed me their casino had taken all of the Las Vegas gambling trade. Leo insisted that my husband and I dine in their spacious dining room. While dining I glanced at the next table to see the former Karen Wolfe and her husband Neil Holcomb who is now a very successful graphical engineer. I stepped over to chat with them for a minute and they insisted on my husband and I joining them at a dinner party in our honor that evening at the Country Club. I accepted graciously and excused myself. I left my hus- band at the huge barber shop owned by Bob Bond and George Arthur. I de- cided to have my hair set for the evening and I was very much surprised to find Betty Whitson the owner of the exclusive parlor. I spent the remaining part of the afternoon shopping. I happened into an exclusive Lady Ellen Shop. I found Margaret Snyder the owner. She informed me that her husband Jerry Risley had given up trucking to manage the many Lady Ellen Shops throughout the United States. I bade her fare- well and returned to my hotel. My husband was waiting for me to freshenup for the evening so I rushed to dress. After arriving at the club the first person I saw was Janice Morrison. I rushed over to have a chat with her. She told me she was the Home Ec- onomics and Biology teacher at Oaktown High since the retirement of Mrs. Springer in 1965. Presently in strode the most eligible bachelor at large Bruce Mayall who is now an executive of the Prudential Insurance Company. Along with him came Greg Mitton who is a most successful civil engineer. After a while Bruce Leak and his wife, Ginger, happened in. Bruce is now an expert aero- nautical engineer. At last in came Kay and Larry Dardeen. Kay is the former Kay Ivers. She apologized for being late. She explained of her difficulty to get a baby- sitter. After a most enjoyable time I had to leave all my friends once again, since I had to set hair for the First Lady of our Land the next day. You see, I'm her personal beautician. Much later in the comfort of my own living room, I sat gazing at the stars wondering what they held for each of us. At last, the time had come. Girls from the student council, lovely in their ballerina length and various colored formals met the members of the basketball squad and formed an archway through which members of the queen's party entered. Little Tamara Tolan, as flower girl, entered on the right and met Douglas Younce who carried the golden crown on a small pillow. They were followed by Miss Barbara Rogers, Freshman, who was dressed in a red floor-length formal. Miss Peggy Trosper, Sophomore representative, wearing white came next and then Miss Julia Garner, Junior, in pink, and lastly, Miss Karen Wolfe, Senior, also wearing white. Each took their re- spective position and Bob Bond, Basketball Captain, stepped forward and opened the envelope containing the name of the girl chosen to be queen. Amid much suspense and excitement he turned and placed the crown on Karen's head, also giving her a kiss and the bouquet of red roses. A large roar of applause from the spectators signified their approval. Karen, as queen, took the basketball and giving it a small bounce christened it for the 1958-59 season. Led by Tamara and Doug, Bob then took her arm and escorted her again through the archway and entirely around the gym floor. They were followed by the other three girls now serving as the queen's attendants, and finally they took their positions on the throne erected in the balcony. Behind the throne was a huge white crown outlined in green, thus making a beautiful background for the queen and her party. Each girl was very lovely and any school could well be proud to have either one of them as their queen but the Seniors of 1958-59 were especially proud and happy to have their entry Karen as their queen of this season.
