Some pieces of the puzzle are larger than others. But it takes every piece, regardless of color, shape or size, to make the whole picture of Oakton. This year ' s Paragon tries to let you see exactly what piece of the puzzle you are. September 4, 1973 started the school year. Bus loads of underclassmen pulled up to the curb starting the new school year. The familiar squeals of car wheels echoed the cry of the returning Seniors. No sooner had school started than the students found themselves wrapped up in Homecoming. The sixth period pep rally proved to be a show for everyone with class competition running high. The shouting, cheering and enthusiasm were fantastic, unequalled by any past rally. An all-new Student Government started early, planning the following activities for the school. Oakton had its first Folk Festival which was truly enjoyed by all. The club assembly presentation put everyone in stitches. Clubs elected presi¬ dents and began drives for club membership. The school got some color into its life — burgundy and gold. Homework kept the week nights busy and left students and faculty alike to look forward to Friday ' s game. After the game the Oakton crowd swarmed to various parties or Far¬ rell ' s Ice Cream Parlor. Winter sank in and everyone was on the watch for the first sign of a snow day. Drama ' s prod¬ uction, Once Upon A Mattress, served as a nice refresher in the monotonous life of the student. The basketball team kept the school on its toes. Everyone needed a rest from school life, especially the students. The year was in full swing. Spring finally came around and spring fever hit both fac¬ ulty and students. Underclassmen got the itch for school to end while Seniors anticipated new beginning. Cafeteria lunches lost business as daring Seniors went to McDonald s, fearful of Mr. Green ' s eyes on the return trip. Finally June 8 rolled around. Oakton lost 4 I 8 students. The day of graduation arrived and Wolf Trap will never be the same. The popular class of 1974 left Oakton, removing a large portion of the puzzle. Each Senior was to find himself in a new puzzle. June 16 came with mixed emotions. Summer had come and the lazy days were soon to begin. All would be returning except the Seniors. The puzzle of Oakton would fall apart and lose its meaning until next year. 2 V A x .cn A rb v 0? . u O J $ V ' , 2 ‘ A A 3 Everyone has a part to play. To each individual there is a part to be played at Oakton. It doesn ' t rtiatter if you ' re not a jock who stands around.the elevator or num-. ber one in your cjass rank. What does matter is the part that you do play. No matter how small or large it is, it is important to yOur life dur¬ ing your four year stay at Oakton. Make your piece count. Why should you sit back and not involve yourself in some activity? Take everything that comes your way and enjoy it. Oakton can only offer what you give to it. 4 5 You can never really hear afternoon announcements. People are too noisy. When you can, Sometimes you listen, and you wish you hadn ' t. Your club ' s meeting today. Well you’re hungry. You want to go home. Nothing is ever accomplished anyway. You complain, but you go. And then you ' re sort of glad. You see people you haven ' t talked to for a while, they’ve got complaints to share, even if you don ' t want to listen. Eventually things get down to business. You talk about making money. Then you talk about spending what you don ' t have. Big plans are made. You know these things won ' t happen but the laughing ' s nice. Everyone gets excited and talks at once, listening only to himself. People exaggerate and enjoy it. They enjoy showing off. You enjoy being part of it. You do a little fibbing yourself. You ' re sfill hungry, yet you are glad that you came. 6 7 8 Complaining is easy. School isn’t. So why go to school? The reason is people. One of the best things about school is people. People you ' d never meet other¬ wise. Some of the best things you do are with people. People are nice to have around. They can make you laugh, or when you make them laugh, that ' s always nice. All of you are a part of your friends. All of you are a part of this school. Com¬ plain if you want. Go to school if you want. Both are easy if you know how. 9 Graduating Class Of Charlie Adams Susan Caldwell Vicki Alexander Jim Calloway Laurie Allan Judy Cangemi Cathy Allison Patti Cannon Keith Allman Mike Carter Wally Alves The 1973-1974 Senior class was the perfect image of fhe upperclass¬ men. Being a very demanding group, the Seniors paved the way to a sur¬ prisingly accomplished year. The class ' long time reputation of being a do-nothing class was destroyed by Ed Culvyhouse s efforts to get the class of ' 74 off their posteriors. The Seniors had their work cut out for them as soon as the year started. A research paper was thrown upon every Senior. Leave it to a Senior to write a research paper the night before it ' s due. S.A.T. s came again for Seniors on November 3. The Seniors began to fill out college applications and started counting up their extra activities to fill the space provided on the college form. The worst part of the Senior year was waiting to see where their future lay. The class ' first demonstration of its hidden power was displayed in the issue concerning the Senior lounge. During the first few days of school the lounge was locked due to the lack of furniture. Several days later the lounge was opened and was full of donated furniture. Hazel and Dick Van Dyke were morning favorites for Seniors. Only a Senior could put up with a broken T.V. The lounge was Senior territory. The Seniors won first place in the Homecoming float contest. They also had their own cheering section at games and pep rallies. Seniors had a little trouble with trash pick up, but can you blame them? Finally Senior skip day did arrive and the class of 74 did it up in style. On June 8 the class of nineteen hundred and seventy-four graduated. It was a class that grew together and will always carry memories of Oak- ton. 44 This article appeared in Block VII early in the year. School spirit is a fine thing, except I think that it is going too far. In this school, spirit is leading to a class prejudice. Everybody looks down on the freshmen, and the seniors think that they are almighty God. When the call is given to the seniors to help clean up the field, how many show up? So let ' s end this class prejudice and not be the classes of 74, 75, 76, and ' 77. Let ' s be students of Oakton High School. We were all freshmen at one time. 46 Seniors Show Spirit 47 I ■%, Senior Superlatives CUTEST COUPLE: Carol James and Wes Neff MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED: Carol James and Hai Tsao BEST LOOKING: Patty Maddox and Gary Bradt FRIENDLIEST : Char Peterson and Stuart Stanley CLASS FLIRTS: Karen Johnson and Robin Stewart 48 1 CLASS CLOWN: Sue Tallichet and Mark Watts 9k. When combined they outnumber the Senior class four to one. With those odds it is not surprising that this year ' s Underclassmen drew quite a bit of attention to themselves at pep ral¬ lies, games, and assemblies. They voiced constant class spirit, not only to the Sen¬ iors, but to the other classes. The Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen, are single units. Each having certain characteristics. Yet, if you were to put them together, they could push the Senior piece right out of the puzzle. After they managed to produce a great float for the Homecoming float competition, they began to cen¬ ter themselves towards making money. They were rescued by the Oakton Club which graciously allowed them to co-sponsor the Harlem Diplomat game. With these funds, and money gained by the sale of Junior class buttons, the class of 1975 finally had enough money to put on a truly memorable prom. Juniors also had to contend with Saturday morning S.A.T. ' s and P.S.A.T. ' s. The choosing of ring colors kept the Juniors busy until finally the day arrived and the Juniors celebrated their first day as a Senior at the Ring Breakfast. As the summer drew nearer, the Juniors dreaded taking exams. Their explosive school spirit had long since gone. They only waited for June 8th — the day when they would finally be Seniors! Under the capable leadership of Bill Edmondson and a hard working class council, the class of 1976 accomplished a great deal. The year started off early for the Sophomores as they ral¬ lied their forces for the Homecoming float competition. The class played a key role in getting the lobby, front office, and doors painted burgundy and gold. They have plans for future modifications and beautification projects at Oakton. Successful fund raising activities and profits from the cotton candy machine earned guite a large sum of money for the class — something that no other class seemed to accomplish. Future plans include signs for the boys ' gym and vending machines for the cafeteria. This summer they will jointly run the Oakton Carnival at the Oakton Center with the Booster Club and the P.T.A. This carnival is expected to gross $ I 8,000. Class spirit and organization can be the Sophomores ' claim to fame this year. They proved to be a very competitive class and have to be commended for their concern with Oakton. President. . . Bill Edmondson, V. Pres . . . Pat McGibbon, Sec . . . Anya Speilberg, Treas . . . Freshmen Speak Out Against Seniors This year ' s Freshman class rallied its forces to beat the underclassmen blues. The Frosh showed unbelievable spirit during pep rallies and even formed their own cheering sec¬ tion at the football games. Trying to raise money is always a problem for the freshmen. This year the class was able to earn a small sum of money that will be an asset toward next year ' s funds. Probably the greatest thing that the Fresh¬ men accomplished was getting to know one another. The class was very large, but it seemed to possess a closeness that even Seniors noticed. What was even more surprising was that the Freshmen spoke out against Senior seniority. Many articles appeared in the Block containing complaints of Senior hazing during the first few weeks of school. One can only guess fhat the class of 1977 will haze their fresh¬ men class to no end. A black and white picture can be seen in the Senior section. 100 Homecoming arrived on October 5 and 6 for Oak+on students and alumni. An enthusiastic pep rally on the afternoon of October 5 was a rous¬ ing success, and served to set the tone for an entire weekend of traditional festivities. The Homecoming weekend was further enhanced when the Cou¬ gars won the football game against Yorktown I 2-7. Halftime activities included the parading of the class and club floats. The seniors presented the winning class float. It portrayed a casket, gallows, and guillotine, with Yorktown symbolically being hanged. The senior class received $ I 5 prize money. The winning club float was from the Environmen¬ tal Action Club. Following the parade of floats was the Homecoming Court. Freshman princess was Pam Tulley and Carla Besosa was the sophomore prin¬ cess. Junior princesses were Karen Wolfe, Claire Schultz, and Lisa Rentsch- ler. An exciting event was the presentation of the five senior princesses, one of whom was to be crowned queen within seconds. Princesses were Daria Borsa, Trish Miller, Janice Wolfe, Patty Maddox, and Lori Williams. Trish Miller, escorted by Bruce Sisk, was crowned Homecoming Queen of Oakton High School. 101 Varsity Football Has Rough Season WV w v O) - _£V v r TV This year ' s Varsity Football team faced tough competition throughout the whole season. The record does not do the team justice. The offensive line was hard to stop on a touchdown drive. The defensive line held back some of the most powerful offensive lines in the county. The team always managed the surprise wins. The Globe rated the Cougars in the top ten and followed the team ' s games in much detail. Coach Edmonson put together a fantastic team which always had good support at the games. The Fairfax game proved to show that the Cougars are a team to be looked at more closely. As always the team was able to come up with a win for Homecoming and fhis year was no exception with Yorktown losing 7-12. The guys had a hard act to follow after last year ' s team. They pulled it off in style. This year’s team is cer¬ tainly to be commended. The energy crisis came as a terrific blow to Oakton. Seniors were understandably upset over the cancellation of the Christmas dance, a sure fund raiser for graduation. Student activities were cancelled during the Christmas vacation, leaving many Oakton students out in the cold. Faculty and students alike had to get used to 68 degrees. Sweaters and coats were common sights during class. In the early mornings Oakton was like an icebox. The only good thing that the energy crisis brought was an extended Christmas vacation. Talk ran through the school of the possibility that the school week would only be four days. Even the administration was hoping for a four-day week. On November 28th, Brad Shipp and Dr. Davis came to Oakton. In an open forum the students could talk openly with both Brad and Dr. Davis as well as with Oakton ' s own S.A.C. council. It appeared that the assembly was boring to the student body. Talking among the audience drowned out the council ' s questions and few gained anything from this assembly. Many of the students were upset over the inconsiderateness that the audience showed. Some students were generally concerned with such topics as pass-fail system, vending machines, and the energy crisis. ■ TO Y , f X) 1 Quentin Fleming, Bill Edmondson, Brad Shipp, Hai Tsao, Dr. Davis, Win Cuthbert, Sheldon Fleming The students of Oakton should be concerned with the energy crisis and problems that affect them. The crisis was no false panic. Many of the students suffered due to the lack of buses available to bring them to other schools for games. Oakton certainly experienced a rough time. Yet, Oakton got through the year. The cold of the winter and the heat of the summer came and went. Hopefully the energy crisis will not be in effect next year. 148 Folk Festival The Folk Festival proved to be a night of entertainment. This activ¬ ity, organized by Rosie Nguyen, Rick Judd, and Cindy Muzidal, pro¬ vided a number of different acts combined with fine music. The night was highlighted with performances by Rosie Nguyen, Rick Judd and band, Frank Ojeds, Chuck Brady, and a girl named Sam. The Folk Festi¬ val proved to be a tremendous success. The Senior class was given all proceeds toward the funding of graduation. Everyone who partici¬ pated should be commended for an excellent job. It is hoped that the Folk Festival will become a tradition at Oakton. Story Theatre The cast for Story Theatre was made up of ten dedicated peo¬ ple: Robin Burchfield, Jim Eyerly, David French, Yvonne Graet- zer, Lynne Kassabian, Karen Kittilstad, Gary Logan, Sammy Molinas, Elizabeth Piper, and Robin Stewart. Theste girls did a great job this year, showing excellent form in their cheers, promot¬ ing spirit, and participating in school functions. They are certainly to be commended for such a fine year. In spite of this lack, the staff pulled together whenever the going got rough — especially on those occasions when more money was needed to finance special features of the yearbook. Every time you find a special effect, or a spot of color, or a color picture, in this book, you are finding something that cost a lot of extra money. That money was raised through the hard efforts of the PARAGON staff. How was this done? The staff sold advertising, for the first time in the history of Oakton yearbooks. It joined the Student Government Staff in sponsoring a Spaghetti Dinner. It contacted four hundred parents, asking them to become Yearbook Sponsors. It urged clubs and individual students to pledge financial support to the book. All in all, it was a big effort — and it paid off. In spite of sky-rocketing publishing costs, our staff held to the line on the price of PARAGON. Do you know of anything else that stayed at the same price during the past twenty-four months? PARAGON is Oakton High School’s largest activity. Nothing else expends as many man- and. woman- ho urs. Look at the picture at the top of this page; it shows the people who gave this time gladly. These people hope you enjoy your book. If you do, come and tell us. If you don ' t, come and make it better next year! That s the challenge we accepted . . . how about you?
