Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-three paragon Oakton High School Vienna, Virginia 1973 — Volume VI Page — 242 FACULTY SENIORS Page — 12 Page — 122 HAPPENINGS SPORTS Page — i 58 ORGANIZATIONS Page — 204 UNDERCLASS Page — G8 3 To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to reap; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love and a time to hate; A time of war, and a time of peace. 4 You hold in your hand the camel ' s hair brush of Life. You stand before the vast white canvas of Time. The paints are your thoughts, emotions, and act. You select the colors of your thoughts; drab or bright, weak or strong, good or bad. You select the colors of your emotions; discordant or harmonious, harsh or quiet, weak or strong. You select the colors of your act; cold or warm, fearful or daring, small or big. Through the power of your creative imagina¬ tion, you catch a vision, you dream a dream. You strive to make the ideal in your mind become a reality on the canvas of Time. Each moment of your life is a brush stroke in the painting of your growing career. The art of achievement is the art of making life — your life — a masterpiece. 5 So much time is thoughtlessly squandered daily with idle complaints about the state of things. The routine of school tends to be dic¬ tating and confining, but for most, lives would be aimless without the routine. What is there beyond the same ceaseless duration of events? We, the students, hold the answer as the true masters of the perpetual hum¬ drum. 1 ’ Routine provides the basic inspiration to begin and to create. To surrender to the beaten path of daily events only proves a lack of interest, and neglect of one ' s present and future. The routine has not been devised to govern us, it has been designed to be manipulated, exploited and molded by those who possess it. We possess our routine and our day, and it is ours to manage in the best way that we are able. 6 7 Life Is Making Time Live for You by Making the Most of Every Minute 8 9 14 Different Interests Different People Different Seniors 15 16 Qeniors Achieve Due Recognition President — Millie Milbrodt, Vice-President — Robin Sagadraca, Secretary — Shelley Rubenking, Treasurer Tanya Lansing The darkened room across from Room 104 daily emitted the voices of Fred Flintstone and of a misplaced Martian and was commonly known as the Senior Lounge. It provided a welcome escape from study halls, a refuge from occasional class and a base for senior activities. The activities began with the lunch-line prank in.the fall as the seniors compelled the underclassmen to submit to upperclassmen disguised as gangsters. They forged ahead and sponsored Silver Bells, the 1973 Christmas Dance. In December, the seniors out-maneuvered several unfortunate juniors in the Welfare Basketball Game. The Class of 73 ' s most prized achievement, unknown to many, was their sponsorship of a child overseas. After Christmas, after SATs, and after most achievements, seniors anticipated senior skip day, their own 50 s Dance and finally, a long awaited graduation at Wolftrap. For the Class of 1974, the 73 year bequeathed upon them many desirable and undesir¬ able traditional duties. They inherited the responsibility of the Faculty Coffee Shop, nour¬ ishing Oaktons underfed feachers. Early one fall morning, many of the college bound Juniors braved their PSAT s, unaware that this was only the first in a succession of Satur¬ day morning escapades. Then one spring day the rings came, accompanied by the cere¬ monious ring turning. Fingers went around as many times as rings it seemed. But all was not traditional. In December, the Juniors made a valiant attempt to raise money for the upcoming Prom. They produced the fabulous Faculty Follies and, with the aid of several sporting teachers, the effort was successful. Finally, Prom time did arrive and the Juniors ' biggest task lay before them. They sur¬ mounted this obstacle and now have only their Senior year left to ponder. 70 71 Adams, Charles Akers, Mark Allan, Laurie Allison, Cathy Allman, Keith Anderson, Glenn Anderson, Jennifer Atkins, Christina Atkins, Pamela Austin, Debra Ayers, Ann Baker, Trena Beard, Don Bell, Beth Berga, Sally Birch, Lee Bixler, Dave Bond, Leslie Bono, Mike Balkovic, Teresa Barnes, Barbara Bartell, Kimberly Baruffi, Daniel Bathurst, Camille Baughman, Cheryl Bengochea, Fausto Bergstrom, Mark Blossom, Debra Borsa, Daria Bothwell, Virginia Bowden, Karl Boyd, Sharon Bradt, Gary Branch, Wayne Bremer, Darlene Brown, Claudia Brown, Connie Brunner, Ruth Buchanan, Theresa Buckmaster, Beth Burke, Gregory Burchfield, Leslie Burstein, Wayne Byerly, Lynn Byrd, Duncan Cahill, Alan Caldwell, Susan Cangemi, Judy Cannon, Patti Carrico, Kenneth Carter, Michael 72 Clegg, Tina Clinevell, Dianna Coll, Jean Collins, Randal Conlon, Karen Carter, Pamela Cejka, Cathleen Chapman, Mark Church, James Clapper, Michael Clark, John Copeland, Kenneth Costello, Marshall Crowley, Douglas Crown, Ingrid Crozier, James Crump, Debra Crutcher, Greg Culbertson, Mary Culvyhouse, Eddie Curran, Kevin Curry, Paula Cuthbert, Winslow Damon, Norman Dargan, William Davies, Carolyn Dean, Brenda Dellinger, Tom Delorenzi, Constance Dennehy, Daniel Depalma, Catherine Devine, Scott Dick, Debra Donaldson, Kenneth Dorey, Danny Downey, Brian Doyle, Charles Duke, Laura Dursee, Thomas Duvall, Walter Eastridge, Robert Edwards, Vic Ellis, Rick Epstein, Janet Esper, Linda Evans, Deborah 73 Evans, Terry Fagan, Susan Farmer, Janellen Featherstone, Jim Fischer, Randy Foster, Edna Freeman, Debra Freeman, James Frey, Chris Gaddy, Joy Garbacz, Tina Gardner, Rob Gaspard, Roberta Gaut, Jeff Gay, Jo Goble, John Goodman, Pat Gray, Pam Green, Donna Green, Pam Gunkel, Patti Gunnell, Robin Haden, Beth Hahn, Anita Hearn, Thomas Heiman, Richard Hendrickson, Jeff Hensley, Sally Herbert, Bill Herndon, Lynette Hodges, Susan Hogan, Paula Holland, David Holmes, Cynthia Holmes, Holly Horne, Becky Houhoulis, Jim Houk, Betsy Houtz, Traci Howard, Tracey Huff, David Hargrove, Keith Harlow, Allan Harrington, Tom Harris, Sherry Hayes, John 74 Hurley, Denise Jackman, Kathy Jackson, Kathy James, Carol Jeffr ies, Don Johnson, David Johnson, Karen Jeanrenaud, David Johnson, Kim Johnson, Paul Jones, Nathan Jordan, Janice Judd, Richard Katz, Lisa Kerfoot, Paula Kerr, Keith Kibler, Robert Kirby, Warren «. The Class of 1976 acquired the majority of their recognition through their size. This year they were the largest class ever to appear in Fairfax County, but this was not their only claim to fame at Oakton. They initiated a major business deal in September and purchased a $450.00 cotton candy machine which they intend to leave the school as their gift. The Frosh Football team added to the class spirit by gaining second place in the Great Falls District. Besides sponsoring the usual dances and sock-hops, the Freshmen also have prospects for future modifications at Oakton. They have voiced hopes for cafeteria vending machines and a Freshman Cabinet. If size has hindered the Class of 76 in any way, they have concealed it well. Rather, the Frosh rallied forces this year to get something accomplished. 102 Class of 76 ' s Biggest Project — a Cotton Candy Machine 103 Aaron, Anne Adams, Peggy Agner, Caro! Buckled roofs and smashed windows made classes there virtually impossible. In search of shelter, the homeless Cavaliers chose Oakton as a retreat for the remainder of the year. At 7:25 a.m., (most) Oakton stu¬ dents arrived for their first class and, by 12:15 p.m., teachers were racing kids out of the parking lots. Woodson students came at I p.m. and remained until about 5:30 p.m. Although many after-school activi¬ ties were canceled, both student bodies managed to survive the ordeal. mm m 151 In connection with Project Concern and World His¬ tory classes, several Oakton students have donated their time for a good cause.
