OaktoMttM Oaktonettes is a girls club formed to serve the community, school, and also the members of the club. More than just a service club, it could be called a social group, because they are able, by working and having fun together, to make very close and lasting friendships. Their plans for the year included working for FOCUS 9nd the old folks homes in the area, and sponsoring a Spirit Week for Oakton. L. Alesi D. Banta P. Bininger P. Bowman R. Boyd J. Brown P. Last minute details were added to the floats as the class of ' 69 took their place in the stands for Homecoming. Although not an impressive game there was an air of friendliness and happiness as the former Seniors were reunited. Judging was deliberated during half-time and the Sophomores were the winning class. Their class displayed the spirit of Oakton. Kathi Turner was elected queen from three Senior Princesses. Serving on the court were, Seniors, Patti Binninger, Cheryl Wuttke, Juniors, Chris McKechnie, Meg Crowlie, Sophomore Joanie Blackburn, and Fresh¬ man Lori Blanchette. Ending a successful Homecoming the Foggy Bottoms entertained during the dance. The Class of ' 69 then became history, as the honored guest at Oakton ' s first Homecoming. 203 204 Miss Oakton does not only represent beauty, she also must be a girl of poise. Her duties were to be present at main events, introduce new people to the school, and also promote spirit. Jamie MacKercher, a sophomore filled these qualifications as the first Miss Oakton. The event of picking Miss Oakton is hoped to be¬ come a tradition. 205 QouAto yawkiiitS v ' 206 The L ' l Abner and Daisy Maes, chaperoned by Mammy and Pappy Yokums, whooped it up in Nov. at Oaktons annual Sadie Hawkins dance. As the night began, bobbing for apples and pie eating contests were just part of the fun. Costumes were judged on originality and just plain cuteness. For the girls, even ' n was highlighted by getting hitched by Marr ' in Sam. 207 One of Oakton ' s most successful assemblies was the demonstration by Mr. Jhoon Rhee of the Jhoon Rhee Institute of Tack-wor-do and his students. He,ld in the gym the classes were captivated as the art of self-defense was put in action. The girls showed how to protect themselves when attacked and the men proved their skill with dangerous weapons. The finale was high¬ lighted by each participant breaking boards with feet and hands from many difficult heights. 208 Moitotujtt U(w v Coctety The National Honor Society had its third annual induction of new members. Various skits, songs, and dances expressed the theme of what Oakton will look like in twenty years. The main purpose of the teachers was to present a show greater than last years. In the show, the theme was based around Shake- speares MacBeth also with an added Laugh-In scene. The Faculty Follies were very successful in that they raised funds enough to sponsor an A.F.S. student over¬ seas. 213 s4 214 The Senior class sponsored Silver Bells, Oakton ' s annual Christmas Dance. The holiday mood was set by the Magic Reign, one of the areas top recording bands. Among the five girls nominated for queen; Kathi Turner, Kerry Mclnnis, Karin Houhoulis, Cheryl Newman, and Tony Pachuchua; Cheryl Newman was crowned queen. She was attended by sophomore Jamie MacKierchner, freshman Pam Collins and juniors Lisa Hunmel and Meg Crowlie. That was the general reaction of Oakton students when the faculty surprised them with Student Appreciation Week. The weeks ' events included a Teaching Day for students, an assembly, coke breaks for all the classes, a No Homework night before the big Marshall game, and hundreds of free movie passes. A special issue of the school paper carried the names of all the students in the school, and included this message: The numer¬ ous special activities were organized and the prizes selected for the purpose of expressing our gratitude, as your faculty, for the great majority of students who are fine people making valuable contributions to our school and our community. 217 218 Keyettes and the FTA sponsored Teacher Appreciation Week in April. The faculty found their lounges decorated and snacks provided every day of their special week.
