fi: -A' 'if K AZ aa' Ala egg-J 'Aga MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE Man has a physical body This needs food and clothing and shelter Jesus taught us to pray for these things in the words 'Give us this day our daily bread When He provided food for the multitudes and when He restored health to the sick He revealed His concern for man's physical needs Geneses records that when God created man He created him in His own image He formed him out of the dust of the earth and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul God created man for communion with Himself One of the great men in the early Christain Church St Augustine adds that the heart of man does not rest until it rests in God As the bird is at home flying through the air and the fish swimming in the water so the soul of man is at home in communion with God Nowhere else does it really rest God created man for eternal happiness The Psalmist writes that when he is to pass through the valley of the shadow of death he will fear no evil The Shepherd of his soul with whom he lived during his life on earth will then be there to receive him The writer of Ecclesiastes in speaking of the separation of body and soul in death says 'The dust returneth to the earth as it was and the spirit re turneth to God who gave it ' Ecol l2 7 In many different figures Scripture speaks of Chrlst as the one without whom the soul of man cannot live Jesus spoke of Himself in that way said 'I am the bread of life ' 'I am the true vine ' 'I am the way, the truth and the life No one cometh to the Father but by me Peter and John confessed their utter dependence on Christ when they said 'And in none other is there salvation for neither is there any other name under heaven that is given among men wherein we must be saved Acts 4 12 Paul confessed 'For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain ' The last statement is dependent on the first If any one substitutes anything in the place of Christ in his life then it is not gain for him tn die A speech may be disputed, even a sermon may fail tc convince, but a Christain life is a living testimony It is the unanswerable argument in sup- port of the Christian rel1g1on. A life begun by obedient listening to God anQ'continued in that way comes a last to a blessed end and is crowned with many good things. Among the kings of old who made a good beginning was Saul. However, he failed to carry on to the end. Even among the small group of men selected by the Lord Jesus to become His special messengers was one who failed, Judas. We are so much more easily attracted by the things of this world. We need not heed that we must eat to live. But we need LJ be reminded dbout our souls. Friend, are you walking upon the way that leads to eternal happiness. Is your soul from day to day receiving the bread of life? Accept Christ as the one who supplies the needs of your soul. Strive that your life may be a continuous testimony to His saving grace. rg- . rx er, k' Cjl. K. A . My -. ' Q ,, qv In If-' ,. 'sa w W -45:5 5 u- - 1 v ' T7 -'-el , . . H8
