1967 P e r 1 s c o p e Oakmont Jr-Sr High School i Dedication The secretaries of our schools are the women we find behind the desks when we enter the school and when we leave. Throughout the day as the telephones ring, supplies are needed, reports need typed and we ask for help to solve our own problems, these women calmly perform their tasks. They willingly do more than is required. Therefore, to the Secretarial Staff of Oakmont High School, namely, Miss Hazlett, Mrs. Keyes, Mrs. Short—who recently retired —and Mrs. Schuster, we dedicate this Periscope. Editor MRS. KEYES MISS HAZLETT MRS. SCHUSTER 3 Foreword I met a seer. He held in his hands The book of wisdom. “Sir,” I addressed him, “Let me read.” “Child—” he began. “Sir,” I said. “Think not that I am a child, For already I know much Of that which you hold; Aye, much.” He smiled. Then he opened the book And held it before me. Strange that I should have grown so suddenly blind. REYNOLDS SMITH Solicitor School Directors HELEN W. TOPPING Secretary 9 Superintendent Of Schools YOU AND OPPORTUNITIES You live in a marvelous age of opportunity. Twelve years of public education are provided. A college education is available for persons who have the desire and an ability of average or above. In addition to the formal education opportunities, a lifetime of learning is pos¬ sible by listening to other people, reading many publications, viewing visual mass media, and by various other approaches. It has been written that many young people today assume the world owes them a living. Whether or not this attitude is prevalent is without substantial proof. All evidence points to more and better opportunities for the person who prepares well, who is a never ending learner, and who will give just a little extra in his chosen job. The typical employee is said to be interested only in fewer hours, large financial rewards, and quick pro¬ motions. The more important considerations involve job satisfaction, service to benefit others, and an oppor¬ tunity to advance to one’s highest expectations. Opportunities will always exist for persons who prepare, w ' ho give that little extra in effort, and who relate to worthy purposes. What will you do with your present and future opportunities? DR. C. PAUL CLARK Bachelor of Science Indiana University of Pa. Master of Education University of Pittsburgh Doctor of Education University of Pittsburgh 10 C. Paul Clark Superintendent of Schools Principal A great philosopher said, “By education I mean that training in excellence from youth upward which makes a man passionately desire to be a perfect citizen, and teaches him to rule, and to obey, with justice. This is the only sort of education which deserves the name. That other sort of training which aims at acquiring wealth or bodily strength is not worthy to be called education at all.” Your parents and teachers have envisioned this kind of education for you who are graduates of nineteen hundred and sixty-seven. If you have attained this goal, they have succeeded in their efforts and you will succeed. If not, they have failed and your future will be in doubt. Best wishes for each of you in the years ahead. Mr. Wagner does have teeth. Oaks gain berth in Allegheny Interscholastic Conference again in 1966 A group of about fifty very determined boys began the ’66 season with the hope that Oakmont could repeat as the W.P.I.A.L. Champs. Due to some redistricting in the schools as well as the change in class “B”, this task appeared extremely difficult to all. However, from August 18 (the first day of practice) until the end of the season, the Mighty Oaks never gave up. Because of this great desire to win, an A.I.C. playoff was salvaged from a year of heartbreak. Three games were lost during the campaign. Twice the losses came with a deficit of only one point. The other defeat occurred when time ran out when we were five points behind quelling the hopes of the Oaks. The greatness of our team may be realized when we see that they never gave-up. They had both a desire to win and pride in their school. We must say that the season was a success topped with a tie in the A.I.C. We would like to wish the best of luck to the teams of the future. Thanks Coaches and team for a season filled with victories. A.I.C. Championship CO-CAPTAIN ERDELJAC Senior Quarterback CO-CAPTAIN KASSER Senior Guard 107 t (!f Haught “kicks-off” the ’66 season. F. ADAMS Senior Fullback Oaks Crush Homestead in Opener Matching the record of Oakmont’s ’65 team seemed to be almost impossible when the W.P.I.A.L. started its redistricting program, but after our first game we were one huge step closer. Because we had not played Homestead before, the coaches knew very little about their style of play. It was through hard hitting and determination that we were victorious in our first outing. Since the score was 41 to 6 it seems impossible to give a complete summary of the game. However, it will suffice to say that was a great team effort. 108 A. SMITH Senior End Adams breaks off-tackle for good yardage. Sleepy heads for a T.D. A. CARRIGAN Senior End Hold it Sherry. Oakmont Sends Mars into Orbit After the win over Homestead we knew what our goal was, a championship game. Buckling down after a big win was the biggest single problem facing the Oaks. With this win we became the team to beat in Western Pennsylvania and Mars knew this. The coaches really got the team up for the game, knowing that Mars would be putting out 100% to knock us off. Well, the team was really “poppin,” all the way to a 34-6 victory! S. MONTAGUE Senior Halfback G. GENTILE Senior Guard 109 Rob scrambles in an attempt to spot a receiver. Oaks Drop a Close One to Cory In ’65 we beat Cory 20 to 13 but in ’66 the Oaks had their string of thirteen wins broken by a 13-14 loss to the Blue Devils. The 14-point lead which the Blue Devils took into the locker room at half-time was just too much for us to over¬ come, but the most important thing to remember is that the Oaks never quit. If we can leave this impression to future teams, something will have been accom¬ plished. Every team must have the will-to-win to be considered great. B. HENLEY Senior Quarterback Don’t just stand there Mut. Drive Itch! C. HAUGHT Senior Tackle Oakmont Picks Up a Win Over Blairsville After two days of hard rain, the skies cleared allowing the Oaks to get back on the winning trail. The Blairsville ball club was no match for the determined Oak¬ mont squad. The Oaks scored in each of the four quarters with runs by Adams, Montague and Preece and a Erdeljac-Car- rigan pass play. The Extra points were attempted by Chuck Haught who was three for four for the day. The strength of a team may be measured by its ability to bounce back and after this 27-0 victory there was no doubt that we had a very fine team. Hang on Nick, Mac is coming to help you. K. CARLBERG Senior Tackle J. KRATSAS Junior Tackle The line opens a huge hole giving Adams 6. The coaches show concern over R. BROWN F. LEOFFLER Senior Guard Senior Tackle R. SCHOLL Senior Guard Arnold Nips Oaks by 5 Points After being held scoreless for three quarters, a fired-up Oakmont team made two touchdowns, in the last five minutes of play. However, this was five points short of a victory. A1 Smith made a brilliant catch for Oakmont’s first six points. Marshall Pollard broke over the goal line from four yards out for the second touchdown. Chuck Haught converted for both extra points. This made the final score 19-14. 112 Will someone ask Smitty what he is doing? « RON BURLING Junior Fullback Oakmont Knocks Off Rival Verona. In the annual Oakmont-Verona game at Riverside Park, Oakmont’s strong team defeated Verona by a score of 20-13. All of Oakmont’s 20 points were scored in the closing minutes of the first half. Among these tallies were runs of 75 yards by both Montague and Pollard, and an Erdeljac-Pollard pass to paydirt. Chuck Haught was two for three for the day on extra points. Better luck next year, Verona? Itch gets set to stop a Verona runner. T. PREECE Junior Halfback M. POLLARD Junior Halfback M3 i M. FLEISCHAUER Junior Guard Sleepy hits them hard. All alone, Sherry races for six points. J. McREYNOLDS Junior Guard Oakmont Slides Past East Deer The game between Oakmont and East Deer gave us many more problems than we had anticipated. Although we won by the margin of five points, the final period ended while East Deer was driving for a touchdown. There was a great deal 4 of hard hitting in this game, but fumbles and interceptions hurt both sides. The final score was 25-20, Oakmont. J. NICKLAS Junior End It was runs like this that gave the Oaks a win. Fred and Itch lead the play around the left end. And Then There Was Avella Would you believe, “We were robbed.” The Oaks had a total of 200 yards in penalties while Avella compiled only thirty. The high point of the game occurred when the Oaks walked off the field with time left on the clock. Following the game there was a “small” fight. WTiile we don’t condone this action, one has to admit that they deserved it. For the record we lost 19-18. T. ADAMS Junior Tackle W. CHARLTON Junior Halfback r J. MAURO Junior End I 16 Oaks Beat Apollo in Close One The Mighty Oaks finished regular season play with a 14-12 victory over Apollo. The touchdowns were made by Sherron Montague on a 43-yard sweep and Freddy Adams on a one-yard plunge. The valuable extra points which gave us the win were scored by our fullback, Fred Adams. It was this game which allowed us to go on to the A.I.C. C. ERDELJAC Sophomore Quarterback R. SAVINDA Sophomore Halfback D. DERINGER Sophomore Halfback Oakmont, Arnold Tie A.I.C. Championship There is no better way to end the season than to have a championship game. The Mighty Oaks gained a berth in the A.I.C. Championship at New Ken field despite three losses in regular season play. In our playoff game with Arnold, there was no score until the last period of play. Arnold en¬ tered the scoring column first with a short plunge from the half-yard line. They attempted a pass for the extra point but failed due to a fine defensive play by A1 Carrigan. The Oaks got the ball on the kickoff and drove to the Arnold 31. The drive was climaxed by an Erdeljac-Carrigan pass which tied the score at 6-6. Needless to say, we failed in our try for the extra point. Congratulations team for a fine season. I !7 Mut’s running ability proved to be a great asset to the Oaks in ’66. Student ROSIE ... felt dwarfed by “towering” Americans ... 148 As her year in the United States came to an end, Rosie Lamela pre¬ pared to leave with regret. Even though she had first felt uncom¬ fortable surrounded by people of “towering height”, Oakmont had become a “home away from home” for her. Streets with bricks, tree- covered rolling hills or white sandy beaches had become a part of every-day life to her. Rosie, a native of the Philip¬ pines, arrived in Oakmont to live with her new American family, the Harold E. Gasses, almost a month before school started. Unfortunate¬ ly, because she became acquaint¬ ed with very few Oakmont students during the remainder of the sum¬ mer, the first day of school was a nightmare of not knowing what to do or where to go. Fortunately, the remainder of the school year proved to be different from the first day. Rosie had neve r before seen an American football game. In her country “football” is actually another name for soccer. Therefore, Rosie went to her first game believing she understood it thoroughly but emerged very con¬ fused. However, once she under¬ stood the rules, Oakmont gained one of its biggest football fans. Also a new experience in Oakmont was Rosie’s first encounter with snow, a day she will never forget. The Philippines, of course, has a very warm climate throughout the year, and snow is unheard of. Con¬ sequently, when the first flakes of snow began to fall, a worried Rosie asked her American sister what those “little white things” were. A big highlight was the Oakmont Prom. Although her school in the Philippines has a Prom, the cus¬ tom is for the girls to wear only street-length dresses. Thus, real “dress-up” occassions are very rare. Rosie especially liked the idea of the boy giving the girl a corsage as this custom is not followed in her country. ... Loved the formal prom ... had to get use to football, snow and cold. 149 Majorettes TONI BAKES JANE GILBERT DONNA HERTZOG BETH FABIAN SUE KENT KAREN BRONDYKE SHARON HIGGINS DIANA KOZORA NANCY PESSALANO DORIS McCOY 150 151 Senior Color Guard PATRICIA HEWITT, EDIE MOLINO, PAM SMITH, DIANE REARICK 152 The Queen Lion’s Club Show TONI BAKES 154 Senior Cheerleaders 155 Junior Cheerleaders ANNE THOMAS PATTY McCARREN NANCY GRAZIER DIXIE WENSEL DEBBY DONLEY SUE KAUS GAIL HOLDEN DEBBY BIERLY 156 Sophomore Cheerleaders NANCY RIDE, CATHY BROWN, GEORGIA AUBELE, PATRICIA FERGUSON JACQUELINE DARRAH, SALLY MEYERS, JANE SYLBA 157 Freshmen Cheerleaders BETSY ROBERTSON TERRY HIMES HOLLY EDWARDS MARISA COSTA NANCY HERSCHBERGER DONNA GIBSON AMY KENNEDY 158 Eighth Grade Cheerleaders PHYLLIS HERTZOG BARBARA FLEISCHAUER ROBIN EITEL JAMIE WALKER BARBARA CROSS SUSAN KEITH NANCY SICILIANO CINDY PIPER 159 Seventh-Grade Cheerleaders GAYLE FUHRER, LESLIE SMYKIL, MICHELLE McGUIGAN CINDY REMAI DEBBIE BELL, JUDY JOHNSTON, BETH HOLDEN 160 161 Homecoming 1966 The Queen EDIE MOLINO The Game Oaks-Verona 162 mi Edie shows off her cake at the homecoming dance.
