Who should be pounding the gavel but Bob Allsbrook, the president. Bob's ex- perience as president of the sopho- more class, member of the basketball team, and co-editor of the Periscope has made him an outstanding leader in our school. Number 22, a star player for the Mighty Oaks, was Dick Gorman. Dick also ably served as vice president of Student Council and a member of the '56 Candlelight play cast. He plans to join the Air Force after he graduates. Pretty Nancy Gaines was one of Oakmont High School's busiest students with Y-Teens, Periscope, Dramatic Club, Choir, and her jobs as Junior Class Treasurer and Secretary of Student Council. One of Nancy's most plea- sant memories is that of being a majorette in her senior year. Fun and friends are what our Student Council Treasurer, Barbara Montgomery, val- ues most highly. Cheerleading, Y- Teens, Alma Club, Choir, Dramatic Club and being a majorette, were but a few of her many activities. ln her field, which is that of social service, Barb is bound to be tops. After meeting the Student Council officers, Perry and Scotty are intro- duced to the senior class officers. They are told that one day soon president Dave Todd will enter the corps of ris- ing young engineers. As sports editor of the '56 Periscope and member of the Math Club, this dependable senior had very little spare time. Vice presi- dent Tom Portera's ambition is to gc to college in the South. ln addition tc his participation in Student Council, Math Club, basketball, and Band, Tom's golfing skill won him quite a reputation. And what a handsome drum major he wasl Kept busy by such duties as those of secretary of her sophomore class, vice president of the dramatic club, and secretary of her sen- ior class, Alice Powley still found time to act, sing, and speak in assemblies, These experiences should further Po- sey's college ambitions, A peppy cheerleader, Jane Flinn served as trea- surer of the senior class and vice president of the junior class. 'Lv L UWC4-A dw V,-L LVL ,QL-C' 'B-Jef jf A ' ,,Px4Y'-i,NA7 'u Von!-K lr Basketball lv Mwj l Vw JJ, Cty M Teamwork pays off At the end of the 56 57 hardwood campaign Oakmonts hard fighting basketball team held third place in the league The season featured many thrilling contests especially at Sharpsburg and Aspinwoll Led by co captains Ted Mileski and Butch Reed the team improved immensely by the end of the season The varsity squad consisted of nine seniors whom we will really miss next year and one junior Don Reed, a 5 ll guard thrilled the crowd on numerous occasions with his spectacular drive in shots Eddie Schwalm s outstanding characterisitc was his sound defense in which he would hold the opponent s high scorer to just a few points Ted Mileskl, one of the team s high scorers was ex tremely valuable for his rebounding Todd Alh mus and Portera shared one of the outside spots on the team. They each performed quite adequately when their services were desired Don Gent, o junior was one of the outstanding scorers, H thrilled the crowd time and time again with his spectacular jump shot. Allsbrook Taylor and Carl- son were available when the regulars needed a well-earned rest. The Periscope Ball initiated a new tradition at O. H. S. The effective decorations of pink and silver set a sophisticated tone to the evening's dancing. Highlighting this gala affair were pizza, hi-fi music on tape, and of course the long-awaited crowning of the King and Queen of the dance, Eddie Schwalm and Sally Virgili, who had been elected by popular vote. 'S The Junior-Senior Dramatic Club spent its meetings hearing reports on the latest plays, making tape record- ings of dramatic readings, and speak- ing over the P. A. system. At Christ- mastime, a party was held for both the Sophomore and Junior-Senior Dra- matic Clubs, and in the spring the juniors and seniors went to the Pitts- burgh Playhouse. Last year the Junior-Senior Dra- matic Club presented the story of a shoemaker by Tolstoy for the Christ- mas service. We think that every member of the staff did his utmost to make the book a success. We will admit that it was a long, but very enjoyable task, At times we were lost, but through the encouragement and un- tiring efforts of Miss Jacobson, our sponsor, we kept working. Nothing was too much for her to do - she listened to our woes, our disappoint- ments and our troubles, and was always near to give a helping hand. There were days when we knew we did everything wrong, but she would only say with a big smile Lets try again In he future when the world needs a good newspaper woman we will recommend Miss Jacobson Our other helper and advisor was Mrs Powers With out her help and guidance to Rich and Dana our photogs and to the literary group this book would never have been a success Also Ted our fine advertising manager kept things lively with hs keen announcements and artistic signs We must not forget our apprentices Al and Mary who did a good job in learning the ropes They are bound to produce a good book next year This year we have found that editing a year- book was lots of hard work and worry, yet when deadlines were met and the whole book was com- pletely finished, we felt a wonderful sense of satisfaction and pride. Being an editor has been a truly worthwhile experience and, in a way, exciting and fun. We've come in contact with new people and have felt a fellowship in working together for a common cause.
