S. ll a student ot l9lU were to visit his alma mater, one of the first major improvements he would notice would lie the addition of an efficient Health Staff. Since l9l7, O. H. S. has boasted a doctor and since IQZ8 also a nurse and a dental hygienist. DR. FUSIA and MRS. HAMILTON help keep boys and girls in condition, and MRS. WEAVER helps them keep their dentist bills down. O. H. S. Then and students over the rough spots and started many an en- gineer on his mathematical way. This brings to mind other members of our faculty. There was Mr. Replogle, whose tireless etforts enabled him to organize O. H. S.'s chorus and orchestra, which proved to be the first high school orchestra in the county. Mr. Replogle was also largely responsible tor the present high school building. We had art and music only once a week, but neverthe- lc-ss, we managed to absorb a sufficient amount of cul- tum . Your high school before was nothing more than it vacant lot, It wasn't until l9l3 that shop and domestic science were added to the curriculum. You think youre ultra-modern by having open house , but we had it, too. S. as a very green and very scared litle freshie. Ouickly I look up my home room number, dash madly up the down stairs, have my first encounter with Miss Ekas and breath- lessly rush into 202. I sit on the edge of my seat watching the clock and listening to a few last-minute instructions. Then at the ringing of that immortal bell, I burn a frail down the up stairs to room 7, my second class. A short time later I enter the gym where I immediately lose myself. To my embarrassment, I am politely informed that I am in the boys' locker room. Then I . . . Madame, at a spin of her crystal ball, brings me up to my sophomore year. SOPI-IOMORE'- ignorant one -to quote from an envious freshman. But a certain I. Caesar might be inclined to agree if he was still kick'n around, lint in other subjects I excel to the utmost. For instance, take my fourth period .... Swish! Here I am a self assured IUNIOR taking time out from my chemical and algebra equations to make the ali so useful observation that freshies come to school in coats, sophs come in ties, the juniors come in shirts and 'The seniors just come. Oh, well, these . . . Another twist of the ball by the Madame and I find my- self a senior, the idol of all the underclassmen. Richard Abel Secretary - - - - .Virginia Hulinfjs Just Reminiscin' As I sat in my first period study hall, rrry thoughts qrrrdually drifted from that impending chemistry test and those unfinished themes. Sitting there in a daze, a common state for juniors, I began to recall the past, take stock of the present, and forgot the future, that algebra quiz. Seine of my most vivid recollections of my fresh- man year occurred in my first few days of scatterbrain warrderings. My fear ef the new teachers fl had hoard a lot about thernl, and the uncomfortable feeling I got when the word office was spoken, all contributed to make life miserable. Though these tears and apprehensions passed with time frnuvh timel, I never did rid myself of the infor- iority felt when in the presence of the upper classmon. Then, too, how could any freshman ever forgot the un- desirable seats in assembly, the difficulty in getting excus- ed sixth period, or the Iona trek to Tenth street in fair weather or foul, mostly foul. This cloud, however, had its proverbial silver lining found in the first dance, the fall sports, and the sharply felt superiority ovor the grade school kids. My sophomore year' was practically uneventful, having by now steeled myself for the Iona steady eighth period grind. I do remember that my returning classmates had changed considerably in ideas, mannerisms, and appear- ance. What two months had done! Now I am a junior-an upper classman. Every fresh- rnan and sophomore dreams of tho day when he, too, can say these words, but now that l am privileged to do so, I cannot realize why I have spent so much time dreaming and longing for Tl-IE day. Don't let me discourage you, freshmen and sophomores, being a junior does have its advantages and is a position to be held high. We roam the halls at will fOh, yeahlt, we get the 332.10 seats in assembly, and have our Class meetings, dances, and games. To the exasperation of the seniors and the glory or the juniors, I must put forth in this everlasting docu- ment a phrase that will forever remind the seniors of their defeat in basketball at the hands of the juniors-- luniors 49, Seniors 46. 'Nuf sed. That won't happen next year. lust watch the seniors in 46 --Oh my! Look at that cleckp 3 minutes to go and none of my work done. No more dreaming for this junior. A quintet flashes down the floor and then the thrill of a basketball as it swishes through the basket. l smell hot-dogs and van almost taste the pop. lt's springtime. Theres soft, sweet music and alim- rrroring decorations. lt's the prom, Now the orclrestra is tuning up. An auditorium is being filled. Ferns and flowers deck the stage. The curtain rises and another play soon makes history. Last of all the same auditorium is again filled. Again the orchestra tunes up, but this time sober faced boys and girls in cap and gown walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. Friends, band, games, dances, seniors . . . all these are to inn the Dear Old Fted and Black. -D. He no longer goes around with a confused look on his face. Upperclassmen have ceased muttering scornfully, Another stupid freshman. He has now attained a higher level of life . . . that of a sophomore! Ol course, there are still greater fields to conquer. Before long he may be a junior and then, the top of the ladder . . . a senior, but right now he must concentrate on measuring up to the stand- ards of a good sophomore. Yes, he'll be a model student. No one'll catch him going up the wrong steps. No sir-eel tl-le'll be too quick for 'em.J When next year's freshmen come in he'll be like a big brother to them, help them learn the rules and regulations of this great institution. His rec- ord will be spotless. Absolutely spotless! These are the new sophomores resolutions as the summer vacation be- gins. After weeks spent in luxurious visits to a tree lined beach and daily dips in the glistening crystal Clear Wdler, he takes his place in school society and immediately for-' gets his good intentions. He laughs contemptuously at the mistakes of the frightened newcomer and teases him unrnercifully. Eiler Girl Reserves Complete a Year of Friendly Service Scrapbooks, favors, assemblies, lectures, friendship, and svrvive characterize the Girl Reserve of 1944-45. The club with cr membership of ll0 was conspicuously active around O. H. S. this year. This junior member of the Y. W. C. A. se-erned to have Service for its motto, since not only thc: school, and the faculty, but the community and, as a re- sult, the girls themselves benefited from its activities. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Henggi many projects kcpt them on the alert. Those scrapbooks, so carefully made for Deshon Hospital: books and games collected for tho Iuvenile Courtp 200 favors for the Aspinwall Veterans Hospitaly boxes filled with educational supplies for less fortunate children in liberated lands: and an open house dance for all O. H. S. students are fitting witnesses to a year of hard work. Wait! That's not all. ln addition to all this, Dr. Burkhart spent two evenings lecturing high school girls on sex hygiene. These lectures were followed by interesting and beneficial group discussions under the leadership of sev- eral faculty members. S. students as another advocate of the Innior Red Cross brings her stirring petitions to a close. lt's February and the Girl Reserves are beginning their annual drive for the Iunior Rcd Cross in all schools. ln fact, it was on a Monday morning, Blue Monday, that they began, but this didn't stop them, perhaps it was a challenge for when they finished everyone was all out for the S100 goal set for 1944-45. ln the primary schools 3.50 enrolled a room in the Iunior Red Cross while in the High School, 551.00-and the result? Miss Ray, the usual supervisor of the mathematical geniuses of Oakmont, became so involved in other school activities that the club was deserted. Now she has returned to the Math Club which has been well organized this year by an enthusiastic group of seniors, juniors and sophomores. The club meets every three weeks. The meetings of this patriarch of O. H. S.'s clubs are in- teresting and enjoyable. Reports about great mathe' maticians and the history of mathematics first hold the attention of the group. S. or quiz wind up the program. An evening social meet- ing and a picnic in Iune closed a happy year. For those scientific minds which are constantly yearn- ing to perform experiments and explore various tields of science, Mr. Keister once again organized the SCIENCE CLUB. Meetings were held every other Monday night at seven o'cloclc in Room 7. Business meetings were usually short and snappy, as most of the interest was centered on laboratory work. Members could perform any experiment they desired if the materials necessary were available. The meetings were attended by such a small number that the club disbanded after the first semester. Then Mr. Keister and his boys won the W.P.l.A.L. Clianipionsliip as well as the Pennsylvania State Cham- pionship at State College on April 7 against Manheim and DuBois. One of the newest organizations around O. H. S. is the timely HOME NURSING CLUB. Every Monday during the year, rain, snow, or shine, this group of girls, all of whom hold a home nursing certificate, meets in the Primary Building. The investigation of eurrent trends in health movements and home nursing techniques keeps the mem- bers up to date. Originally organized for increasing in- terest in the study of nursinq, it has successfully carried out its purpose. But aI1 the school knows there'll be plenty of fun. The teacher tries vainly to quiet his class, While out in the halls, music plays with a blast. For the seniors have started a day which ts theirs To look back on with pleasure, when they're bald or gray hatred. , The costumes they wear throw the students into laughter, There's Dick Tracy, The Brow, with Gravel Gertie chas- ing after. The time goes by slowly from nine until noon, For the students all know that the fun will come soon. 'V .W CLASS DAY . -,Q Then after the lunch hour into school they all go, The afternoon's reserved for the seniors' last show. The time we have waited for arrives at last, And the show begins with an all senior cast. .The afternoon wears' on and the time seems to fly, While the seniors crack jokes of the school days gone by Iokes of the teachers, principal and all, And all of their stories are both comic and tall. Then after the close of this gala affair, The OLD SCHOOL relaxes none the worse for wear The ring of the last bell has now faded away, ' And the OLD SCHOOL withstood another Senior Class Day -Ward Olllder, '46 THE END OF A SEASON Across the varnished, hardwood floor The sounds oi cheering ring no more. The balls that once were dribbled there Have now been put away with care. The teammates, who had played each game And fought their way to well-earned fame, Have now each gone his own llfe's way, But some return next year to play. Yes, the season is over, games lost and won, -We've learned to play fairly: we've had lots of fun No more the scrimmage games each night, Which gave us practice for the fight. Yes. now the floor is empty and dark, The season's over, but wait now-harkl I hear the echo of wild cheers again.
