TLEITZ, llfgll Srhonl l'1'inr1'p11l A Message on Loyalty Faithfulness in all thingsfto friends, promises, duty, or country-is a quality greatly needed in the world today. The Board of Education is glad that the staff and sponsor of the Puiuseoric have recognized this need and emphasized it by choosing Loyalty as the theme of this yearls publication. The same devotion to duty which has made this book a suecess should be of great service to these young people in the coming years. In all the hurry and bustle of getting out the PERIscoPE, little thought. is given by subscribers and advertisers to the loyalty of the staff and the fine work of its sponsor. The Board of Education extends greetings to the 1938 Staff and knows that this issue will measure up to standards of other years. For the Board, Ro1sr:R'r G. S'rRoUn, Pl'0.9I'Ill'IIff Board ol: Education Talks Things Over The welfare of the school boys and girls of Oakmont is in the hands of this group of men, the administrators of the Oakrnont sehool system. As the enrollment of pupils and teachers increased, the niernbersliip grew from five rnenibers in 1889 to its present size. They meet at least once a month to discuss school problems and methods of improving the prescnt school system. EMMANUICL Wooomcas Romcwr G. S'I'lt1ll'lJ, Ill'C,,I-lll'Ill Cam, II. Fam' J. H. Great oaks froni little aeorns grow. That, at least, was one eonsoling thought to each of us freshmen our first day at high school last September. Four years ago, the seniors were just as overawecl by their superiors as we but nothing claunts theni now. So, under the proteetion of the friendly boughs of the larger oaks, we began to take root. After the first harrowing week, things began to adjust themselves. With so niueh fertile territory in which to spread we set to work. The regular routine hail begun. Latin and French verb eonjugations, algebra unknowns fcleeicleclly unknown to usj, ancl the typewriter mysteries beeaine realities. The first shoots of our tiny trees appeared when, as a Civics elass project, we succeeded in our Hstop sign eanipaign. That gave us niore eourage. Freshman initiative began to show itself in other ways. Within the next three years we hope to be really able to aeeoinplish something. With our influence already being felt, why can we not grow to be the sturcliest trees of the forest 'F Ilclcn Moore l32l C. Kruse, li. Eclwanls, IS. Con- F. Javks, D. Mimlclleinas, M. S. is hack in the running again as far as football is eon- eerned. At least the score hook showed two more victories this year than it did last year. At Oakmont's first game of the year, a pass to Vonlosh in the end zone gave the Red and Black the needed edge to defeat Freeport 6-2. Some of our victory enthusiasm was quenched when more powerful Aspinwall Ugriddersl, pushed over live touchdowns against our hard fighting team. Shadyside again defeated Oakmont, hut the boys really made a comeback in the two following games. They held Brentwood scoreless until tl1e final minutes of play when a blocked kick gave the opponents a break and to our chagrin, a victory. Davis went over for Dakmont's second win of the season over East Mclieesport 7-0. However, when Oakmont failed to turn hack the Grange and Black wave of Springdale, there was left only the Verona game, the last ehanee for a charm of three victories for the season. Did Verona get 51 points in this year's Plum C'reek Valley Tournainent? No! O. H. S. stopped them at 14. Bob Springer was Oakmontfs hard hitting center and captain. When Johnny nails youu you stay got The guard position was 11ot wanting with Ludchak in the game. Faust tosses another of his speetaeular passes. 'fWhen hetter runs are made, Davis will make 'emff N. 'A' 'Ir i' The PERISCOPE, at the ripe old age of 22, ended its advertising campaign this year with a bang. The staff wishes to extend special thanks to C. D. Henke, E. A. Volkwein, N. H. Fisher, Alex Palmer, W. M. Singler, E. N. Miller, and the Oakmont Planing Mill who have advertised ever since the PERISCOPE came into existence. Home town merchants are interested in our success, as the eighty-four local ads prove. The large number of out-of-town patrons shows that the circulation of the PER1scoPE is not confined to our own locality. To all these patrons who have helped finance our yearbook, the Staff heartily exclaims, Thanks a million l' ' To the loyal members of the student body, we extend a heartfelt Thanks for cooperating and hope you like it. Off come our hats to Miss White, Mr. Edmiston, Peggy Woodside, Muriel Bigenho, Susie Siena, John Angelson, Gerald Steffey for their greatly appreciated services. As usual, the staff is indebted to Mr. Wise of J ahn and Ollier and to Mr. Gray, our new printer. They've done so much toward making the book a success. To you all, one last, loud, lusty Thanks, and a rather sad Cheerio. Dear Jane, 'Thursday in Miss lierr's, after the children that were in the exhibition were gone. We read are silent readers. In the silent readers was a picture of a whisle. And it showed how to make it. So the children all made one. And there was a noise in the room. Yours, sincerely Bobby Schreiber Dear Jane, VVhen I went to sunday school I had a lot of fun down at sunday school like I always do. When I was sitting down a girl stepped on my Toe and I didn't like it so I told her to keep her feet to her self and She said she wouldn't do it so she kept on. Then finally the fun began and the way it did begin I started makeing them laugh and they laughed till teacher said to stop then the fun was ended. Roy Carlberg Dear Jane, The hole class has to write you a letter so don't be provked if the boys sent you letters. VVe miss you. I hope you will be back soon. School leaves out the 26 of June. Will you be out of quarantecne? I hope so. Love Biekie Dear Jane, I hope you'r brother gets well soon and I may get an Oz book to you. Craftsmanship- The finer material things of life are made by a fusion of the baser elements of nature with human aspiration---which finds ex- pression in superior---CRAFTSMANSHIP A high tribute to human intelligence is that man can take a piece of clay and make of it a thing of beauty. In all of the processes of this transformation there must be a guiding mindg that mind itself is guided by aspiration. Skilled hands alone cannot produce the high- est grade of printing. There must be aspir- ation to do better what thousands do well. There must be a combination of natural talent, knowledge gained from experience and, of course, the necessary tools. Every printer has these in some degree. The difference between printers is the degree in which they have them. When they are pres- ent in a high degree, they result in beautiful and useful printing. The extent to which we have them, has gained for us a high appre- ciation among many patrons. The Gray Printing Co.
