Senior Class History In the fall of 1928 the class of '32 entered the portals of O. H. S., an army of r txt, ' one hundred Hfty souls. Their first venture was a Valentine party, a huge success in spite of many difhculties. In june a much wiser group finished the year anxious to return as sophomores. Athletics gave the sophomore girls a chance to bring renown to their class by capturing interfclass basketball and track championships. The E. Y. M. or Enjoy Your Mathematics Club claimed many sophomore members. Oakleaves, a stage show for the lbenefit of the CakfLeaf, gave many sophomores an opportunity to show their dramatic ability. Organization and choice of class oflicers were the privilege of the newlyffledged upper classmen, Fear Fowler was elected olhcial guide for the coming year. A new Commercial Course claimed many of the members of this class as interested and eager workers. Another new organization, The Travel Club made its debut with juniors and seniors as members. Again the girls distinguished themselves by winning the interfclass volleyvball championship. The purchase of class rings and pins added to the thrill of Christmas vacation. The Dramatic Club play, The Tightwad , and the OakfLeaf play, Listen In on the Campus , gave more stage experience. The climax to a happy year was marked by the Junior Prom. Advice to all senior classes is to start the year right with a senior class picnic, weiner roast preferred! Can the sight of ,those thirtyfthree pounds of weiners ever be forgotten? Class songs, Periscope pictures, and the Dramatic Club Play prepared this group of S9 seniors for the thrills of Commencement and the neverftofbefforf gotten experiences of Baccalaureat, class night and that last tearful moment which marked the close of four pleasant years at O. 'sw W ' , ., 'lf i ai' if f ,I L Junior Class History ' On new and untried wings, in the fall of 1929, a company of 123 freshmen arf rived in O. H. S. Nothing of consequence was done until the next spring when a trial flight into society was made at a party successful in every detail. The following September the class again took off. Nothing of very great im' portance was attempted except by those memlbers who formed the cast of the play 'lDi0genes Seeks a Secretary given by the Commercial Department. An attempt at a second social flight ended in a forced landing, due to unfavorable conditions. In the third year of the course, class ofiicers were elected to act as the crew necessary to guide this ship housing 83 souls on a successful tour of O. H. S. On bifmonthly landings at the home port again the ship landed and remained long enough to have part of its crew help edit the Oakleaf, the school paper, and produce L'The Periscopew, the year hook of O. H. S. In June the seniors enjoyed the yearly prom, the guests of the junior class members. The class hopes that during the last ycar of its flight, it may establish a hitherto unprecedented altitude of achievement. Chorus: Oakmont High School, Oakmont High School, The dear old Red and Black, With her colors ever flying, And the team we'll always back. Oakmont High School, Oakmont High School, We'll stand by thro' thick and thin, Every game will bring us nearer, To the goal we're bound to win. just playing loyal, straight and true, Is what our good team always aims to do, Whether it's victory or defeat, We know that good sports can't he heat, Our team will do its very vbest, And we must always do the rest, By standing up and cheering long, With this our Oakmont High School song. l30l AT HL12 TIC S WU, Z ff R -A QF XX - -,-117.4 r f , ,,. , 'FA '.. The personnel of the team was composed almost entirely of fourth year men. After being defeated at McDonald 13f6 in a hard battle, Oakmont came home to win successively two games, one with Aspinwall 13'6 and one with Arnold 13-O. Bozo intercepted a pass and made a beautiful run at Shadyside, thus tying them 6-6. After this game the team rested a week. Bad weather and a wet muddy iield helped in a 33-6 defeat for the Red and Black at Edgewood. The game with Springdale, possibly the most evenly matched game of the season, was won on a lucky touchhack by Springdale. A week later the team went to Verona and romped up the field for a ?.5f0 victory. A 1413 victory over Millvale ended a successful season of four games won, one tied, and three lost for the O. H. S. griders. l31l Q Y First Team Second Team F. Muir ........ . . . r ...... R.E. .... .... W . McK0wn W. Stcenburgh . .. ... .. .R.T. .... . . . . Yukstas J, Markovitz .... . . .R. G. .... ..... L . S. a whirlwind iinish at the Allegheny Kiski Valley Tournament. A reckoning of accounts at the end of the season showed a total of nine games won and eleven lost. In the first encounter at the tournament, the team came through in the last few minutes to win the game from Arnold hy one point. Oakmont casilv defeated Kittaning in the next tilt. The fast Franklin team nosed the hoys out in the semifhnals and Freeport gave the Red and Black the ganie for third place. O. H. S. is very proud of the trophy which the boys brought home from the tournaf ment. It shows that persistent plugging is always rewarded. It was the result of an almost heaten team lighting to the Hnish to win that tirst hattle with Arnold, that gave the team the confidence and courage to win the trophy. I33l 0.1-l O.l-1 O.l-I O.H. LSXI THE PERISCOPE Travel Club The Travel Club attempts to promote interest in scenic places, particularly the great features of our own country, hy showing collections of lantern slides and Films. The group is asked to keep a scraphook collection of pictures and reading materials on the great national parks of U. S., with some tours near the end of the year to Europe and the West Indies. Hikes, picnics, and kodak exhibits occasionally add a touch of local color to the clu'b's activities. OFFICERS OF THE CLUB Sponsor ..... Mr. Philson President . Kirk Gildersleeve Secretaryf'I reasurer jane Anderson ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE Claudia Ritter Jean Lewis William Shirley U91 THE PERISCOPE ril The Commercial Club This, the second year of the Commercial Club, has been a much better year in every respect than last year. A change in the Club Constitution early in- the year permitting membership of any student in the High School carrying two commercial subjects, and maintaining an average of C or better in all work, has evidenced beneficial results. Business meetings in which proper parliamentary procedure was stressed, program meetings consisting of talks by local business men, motion pictures, essays, and skitsg a trip through a city department storeg a social meeting at the sponsor's homeg a commercial playg and a picnic have helped to develop the objective of the club, which is to further the ends of commercial education, to foster a spirit of loyalty to each other and to the school, and to bring our students into closer relation with the busif ness men and the industries of our community.
