In the fall of 1936, nineteen inexperienced sailors joined the crew of U-Boat O. H. S., which was under the command of Admiral Mock. Three ensigns were transferred from other elementary ships, namely Ensign Felton from S. S. Indianapolis and Ensigns McDaniel and Stewart from S. S. Castleton. Ensign Stewart was later retransferred to S. S. Castleton. Vice Admiral McLaughlin, who was also new to the U-Boat, was assigned to us as our commanding officer. Crew officers were Rear Admiral Trittipo and Captains Hausafus. Smith, and List. We met the usual criticism and ridicule from the older ensigns, but we bravely attacked our new subjects. We enjoyed several parties in spite of the upper crew's interference. We were glad to sail home for the summer furlough. In 1937, we boarded the U-Boat with more confidence, for we were no longer in the limelight of ridicule from the upper crew. During our long furlough Ensigns Perkins, Harting. and Horton found life easier elsewhere, but our number was raised to sixteen with the appearance of Ensign Phelps, who was transferred from S. S. Technical. Bruce was selected as our Vice Admiral, with Rear Admiral Reynolds and Captains Trittipo. Smith, and McConnell as crew officers. All subjects were attacked with fairly good success, and we had ample time for several enjoyable parties. We were proud to see Rear Admiral Reynolds' name on the Plaque. In 1938, we were destined to be again under the command of Vice Admiral McLaughlin. Ensign Miller was transferred to S. S. Technical during our furlough. As crew officers we chose Rear Admiral Trittipo and Captains Reynolds, Smith, and McDaniel. It being a custom for the ensigns in our rank to give the graduating crew a reception, we set about to make money. Besides selling candy all year, we launched a terrific paper drive, which enabled us to give the upper crew a fine reception at Indiana- polis. We attacked our newest foes, typing and shorthand, vehemently. We were proud to have Ensign Phelps receive the Plaque Award. We ended the season very successfully, though we do believe that there was some sabotage in connection with our candy counter. In 1939, the largest transfer of all took place. Admiral Mock was transferred to S. S. Lawrence, and Admiral Callaway greeted the undecided crew of U-Boat O. H. S. He and Vice Admiral McLaughlin took over the difficult task of sponsoring us. Watson is our Rear Admiral, with Captains Huntley, Smith, and McDaniel. During our furlough Ensigns List and List were transferred to S. S. Advance, and Ensign Fields was transferred to our U-Boat from S. S. Castleton. Our motto is Always lead, never fol- low . Our flower is the Rose, and our colors are Rose and Silver. We took shore leave to attend a party at Rear Admiral Watson's. We also held a blow-out in the torpedo room. with most of the higher-ups attending. ' Harriet Talmadge 7 Pauline Apple X Emily Fields As our class draws nearer our ultimate goal of graduation, we find ourselves smaller and smaller in number. As Juniors, we are nine. We welcomed this year, Emily Fields from Castleton. For a few weeks, Pa- tricia Downtain was with us. What we lack in number, we try to make up in energy, effort, and enthusiasm land, in our own opinion, we succeedll. To all activities, we make contributions-we include band members, basketball players, yell-leaders-Yes, and we are the only class who can boast a 100'? membership of our girls in our newly organized Girl Reserves. As salesmen of magazine subscriptions, Christmas cards, and candy, we have been very successful. Welve also, had our share of fun. December 5, we most thoroughly enjoyed a theatre party given by our sponsor, Mrs. McDaniel, at which we both saw and met in person, Lum and Abner. Our Christmas party at the school building December 15, was a success. As this goes to press, we see many more good times ahead. Captain Reynolds with his assistantsg Smith, Hay, and Parker have done well, al ways following and enforcing the rule A quitter never wins and a winner never quits . Roy Money boarded the ship this year and brought the crew total to fourteen. This group is now looking forward with great eagerness for the greater privileges and responsibilities that come when we start on the third leg of our journey next year. To make our entrance official We Were initiated at a Wiener roast given by the Seniors. In spite of the initiation we enjoyed ourselves very much. So far we have enjoyed a skating party at Riverside. A short time later we had a class party, all members of the class attended. Lamar Downtain left us to attend Franklin Township and later Philip Money from Franklin joined our class to make our number fourteen once again. We have enjoyed being Freshmen and are looking forward to being the future Sophomores. K3 '53 - ll 1 P0576 Si'l'1'IllLL'l'7Z BASKETBALL Shoot 'em high! Guard 'em low! Yea team! Let's go! This might well have been the motto of the 1939-40 O. H. S. Varsity team as they completed one of the most successful seasons in recent years. O. H. S. played 17 scheduled games, winning 9 of them. The boys got off to a poor start but came back from Christmas vacation all pepped up and won all but two games, one being lost by only one point. In the County Tourney we lost to Decatur Central and in the Sectional we lost a hard- fought game to Warren Central. The team consisted of boys from all four high school classes. Capt. Watson, Frazer, and H. Apple proved very efficient in the offensive, while Negley and Hay held down the guardposts in grand style. Each of the four Senior boys received his sweater for his splendid service to the team. A letter was given to Harold Apple for having played varsity basketball two years. Our Reserve Team won six games out of fifteen hard-fought battles. They really put up a gallant fight and deserve much praise for good sports- manship. Even though we are bidding goodbye to four senior basketball players this year, we feel sure our reserve team will carry on next year. Three cheers are given Coach Bruce for his able work, and also to Student Manager Jack Parker. Practically all the boys in high school participated and came through with flying colors. We played six games and won four of them. The other two were lost by just one point. The boys played their first night baseball game against the Alumni at the Fortville Ball Park. They proved they could play a good game, day or night, as we won 5 to 4.
