Ai ' X, 111B TAJJSLQAII 1959 Published Annually by the students of Oakland Technical High School Oakland, Califomia The members of the Talisman staff of 1959 dedxcate this yearbook to those who have advanced the cultural arts in our school. Mrs. Laura Stine . . . It has been said that dancing is the most moving, the most beautiful of arts. You have helped to illus- trate this idea through 'your excellent choreography for Patterns in Tone, Antigone, and the Dads Club Talent Show. Unforgettable is your arrangement of Street Scene for Patterns in Tone. Through your ejorts we have come to realize that dancing truly is one of the most beautiful of the arts. Mr. John Mortarotti . . . You have worked hard and have given much of your time conducting good music for us. ,W ith- out your ,help some of our school produc- tions would have been almost impossible. You have prepared numbers for Patterns in Tone, for the Dads Club Talent Show, for assemblies and activities, and for the seniors' most important event, graduation. Everywhere we turn the results of your hard work fill our hearts with music. Mr. Harry Spencer . . . W e thank you for your choral arrangements for assem- blies, for Patterns in Tone, and for graduation. You have contributed a great deal to the art of music at Tech Under our ' 9' direction are musical groups for almost every interest: the Choir, the Serenaders and Boys' Glee, Girls' Glee, and Sophomore Glee. We commend you for ojering this wide choice of music as well as for your patience and willingness to help. Mr. Stuart Hayes . . . No matter how good a performance may be, it cannot be a success' without sound. Your work behind th s h' ' e cenes, w ich is not always openly recognized, differentiates between the per- formance and the success. You see that the public address crew is always on the job, providing sound for term plays, dances, game events, and noon rallies. It is your direction that enhance special events. s so many of Tech's Mr. Selmer H. Berq - - Superintendent of the Oakland Mr. John J. Kinq Public Schools - - President Mr. Richard L. The jinal test of our ejforts must be the deepest convic- tions, the actual behavior, the character and lives of our students after they leave our sheltered campus. Have we really helped you to become more alive and sensitive, better husbands and wives and parents, better citizens, more humble and resolute and tolerant as human beings? The spiritual quality of Oakland Technical High School is our never-ending concern, regardless of how that quality is achieved. This has been our prime purpose. It is hoped that we achieved our purpose, and that we have enlarged-your vision and determination to make the conflicts among men creative rather than destructivef, DR. GEORGE C. BLISS principal To you who have just completed an Odyssey through high school there comes the natural feeling that the journey is over. Not so, for you've only begun the preparations for a creative and useful life. ':Craduation from Tech is only a physical step. You can't really leave Tech. Like Ulysses you are a part of all that you have met. The spirit, the trarlilions, loyalties, standards, moral values-all go with you as well as our sincere zcishes for your suceessf' DONALD LUCAS boys' vice-principal The Tech student body members have built themselves a name for good sportsmanship, academic achieve- ment, cooperation, and loyalty within the student body. This yeafs projects have created stronger unity, loyalty, and school spirit of which we can all be proud. It was held on Ianuary 23 at the Rockridqe Women's Club. The theme was Egyptian. and the decorations consisted of a pyramid and palm trees. Tables were set up around the dance floor, and each table had a miniature palm tree on it. The seniors danced to the music of Paul Faria until the bewitchinq hour. The Ball proved to be a grand finale to the seniors' three years at Tech. f Q HARRY PAYNE, Class Vice-president . . . I found my term as vice-president of the class of January, 1959 a very rewarding and challenging experience. Our stay together as a class throughout high school brought a closer relationship among us. Through association with students of different cultures and varied backgrounds I have gained insight. I .would like to extend my gratitude to all those who aided me in perform- ing my duties. It is my hope that the class, though each goes his separate way, will remember the Tech spirit-uAll for one, and one for allf, MAE CHU, Class Treasurer . . . Looking back through the years I can remember my hrst day at Oakland Technical High School. It was a day I shall never forget, filled with excite- mient and confusion. Little did I know then that that day would be the begin- ning of the three memorable years of my life. As I review those three short wonderful years I can truly say that attend- ing Tech has been an enjoyable experience. It has helped me to develop and grow both scholastically and socially through its fine faculty, students, and extra-curricular activities. Best of luck to you. seg ge.. I wish to express to you my thanks for placing your faith in me to lewd the senior class as president. I am grateful for the cooperation you have shown in class a-fairs. I t is my wish that each of you will attain your goals and that you will find success and happiness. PATTY CHINN, Class Vice-president . . . .Thanks to all of you who have made my last year at Tech .a truly memor- able one. I can never tell you how much I've enjoyed knowing and working with you. Thank you for your help, your enthusiasm, and your encouragement. My last year is the climax to three wonderful years of fun and work. I wish all of you happiness, success, and heaps of fun in the coming years. ALADRIAN WILLIAMS, Class Secretary . . . I would like to thank all of you for giving me the opportunity of serving as your class secretary. I would also like to thank all of our teachers for their efforts in trying to prepare us for the years to come. I hope that our class, in some small way, has helped to set an example for the class to follow. Your cooperation in all of the class activities has been a great help to me. Thank you, my senior Tech class and faculty, for all of the pleasant mem- ories that I shall have in the future. NELL IRVIN, Class Associate Justice . . , Years from 1959 you will dream of Technical. Musing over the young, vivid oddities of Tech you will reminisce upon the corny, yet delightful assemblies, the television cameras in the shops, and the Friday state of con- fusion, homeroom. Happily you .will recall the football field that the Repre- sentative Asembly could never get fixed, the soft and usually wet grass of the front lawn, and the ultra-bouncy cheerleaders on game days. You will remember Technical and be glad you were part of it all. HESTER HARRIS, Class Treasurer . . . Good-byes always seem to bring sadness, so I will say so longv with the hope of seeing many of you in the future. I would like to thank each of you for electing and assisting me as your class officer. It is my great hope that you all achieve the goal for which you have been striving. CAROL SMITH, Class Treasurer . . . These three years at Tech have brought forth many experiences, memories, and friends that I will never forget. Above all, it was truly an honor to serve as your class treasurer. I hope that each of you attain lasting happiness in the future, and you will always remember your days at Tech with feelings of both joy and sadness. r+2i1.:, 1 Ll: i 4' I-loNons IJ X, X 'IJ Q 1 ftkifi' WG! , ' ff jf 5 7,0 J l xgvf Aff' 'Q lg! She will graduate with other members of the June, '59 class. After her return to Norway in the middle of June, she plans to enter the University of Oslo to become a teacher. I would like to tell you how wonderful this year at Tech has been. Besides having learned a lo-t about your country I have been able to realize my old dream: to live in a foreign country, not as a tourist nor a guest, but as an in- habitant of the country. I have learned what America is and have found that people all over the world must be the same, for we have the same hopes and the same fears. I feel that this foreign exchange student program is a wonderful way for us, the inhabitants of the old world, and you, the inhabitants of the new world, to come to a better understanding and to get to know each other. I want to thank you for giving me this wonderful experience, and I know that some time in the near future I will be back in California which has come to be my second home.
