DECEMBER Q.. 1913 I4 MEMORY SKETCHES HROUGH graying sfreaks of wind-curved rain, sfern and aloof fo fhe assaulf of fhe sform, fen shallow, widely-builf sfairs lead fo fhe heavy doors of Technical. Scamper- ing raindrops, nof unlike faf, squirming gob- lins, splash and slide ioyously fo form widen- ing pools on fhe walk. Sfray sfudenfs, garbed in galoshes and raincoafs, and wifh umbrellas fhaf fighf fo hold fheir own againsf fhe sform, are swepf up fhe broad walk, like crisp aufumn leaves, frisked abouf by fhe wind. The lawns are flaffened, fhe corners flooded over by muddy wafer, and fhe firs af eifher end are myriads of finy cold raindrops, blown care- lessly againsf fhe boughs, shaking and slip- ping wifh each new downpour . . . K K D D Wildly cheering roofers below fhe brighf Technical banner, fhroafs fhrobbing, faces glowing: fauf players, shiff fo fhe righf, fhe ball snapped, fhen fhe final glory of a fouch- down: an iniured player, face wrenched wifh pain, roofers shoufing ouf his name: fhe band, insfrumenfs gleaming in fhe sun, brown uniforms dark againsf whife middies and shirfs-fhe fhrill of a feam pushing on fo vicfory . . . K K D D Walking from one end of Tech's hallways fo fhe ofher, one hears fhe sfaccafo click of fypewrifer keys, voices from hisfory and mafhemafic classes, fhe quief hum peculiar fo fhe library, fhe business-like underfone of fhe offices, fhe noisy iumble of newspaper sounds from fhe Scribe headquarfers, fhe blending of fones descending from fhe glee rooms, all mingled fogefher. One's fooffalls on fhe rubbery floors echo up and down fhe empfy corridors, fhaf are soon fo be fhronged wifh pushing, surging sfudenfs, shoufs of hello fo friends, faces responding in quick smiles . . . Flashing sabres, shining buffons: barked commands, companies wifh sfraighf lines passing in review: fhe slap of well-polished slings againsf glossy rifles: low voices of fhe officers asking quesfions and eager voices of cadefs answering: cadefs under fhe direcfions of non-coms marching back fo fhe armory: fhe crash of bolfs as fhe companies inspecf arms: fhe command Dismissed, and fhe cheers of cadefs relieved of fhe pressure of being af affenfion: fhe parade is over . . . K K D D Two sfone benches, invifing and cool under shade frees: fhe parade ground, marching columns, even, khaki: flowering peach frees, blazes of clusfered blossoms: powdery yellow acacia, peppery in odor: fhe sfeady clamor of machines in fhe shops: carefully planfed shrubberies: lacy paffern laid on fhe marble lobby floor by sun and ironed-crossed doors -all are parf of fhe campus we will never forgef . . . SENIOR MEMORIES And so a door has opened wide And s+ands flung back . . . DECEMBER ... IQ!! FROM A SENIOR? DIARY T'S RATHER nice fo be young. Life is suddenly very imporfanf and very fhrill- ing. Af fhe Senior Banquef if occurred fo me fhaf I really am leaving school, and all ifs cloisfered securify, and I felf awfully aged and decrepif, and wepf loudly for my van- ishing youfh and for all fhe fhings fhaf musf be puf aside. Funny, fhis business of growing up-an endless process of puffing foys on fhe shelf, fo gafher dusf fhere and be forgoffen. We're consfanfly leaving parf of ourselves behind fo make room for somefhing new. Maybe 'l'haf's fhe only way fhaf fime really fouches us. Maybe +haf's whaf growing old is. Some people grow old beaufifully, because fhey're careful whaf fhey leave behind, and whaf fhings fhey make room for. The ofher day I looked info fhe mirror and was appalled fo see how old I was. Why, I'm nof a kid any more! I have fo shave every ofher day now. lThis broughf a glow of manful pride.l Preffy soon l'll be raising a family and coming home from fhe office wifh a newspaper sficking ouf of my overcoaf pockef, because almosf anyfhing can happen when you have fo shave every ofheruday -, and for a liffle cherished fime, looking af fhe Me in fhe mirror, fhe ofher Me felf incredibly old and wise and wanfed fo go abouf pafernally paffing fhe heads of liffle girls. Then in an illuminafing flash, fhe whole fhing was very, very funny, and an irrepressible somefhing uncoiled like a spring inside me, and I laughed. I laughed af fhe poor, solemn pompousness of my own youfh and af fhe reflecfion of myself laugh- ing back af me, and we had a glorious, gay old fime, fhaf ofher Me and I. Sfrangely, from ouf of fhe dusf of briefly forgoffen fhings, I recapfured a picfure of anofher Me, a Me fhaf was so much surer, wiser, older fhan I am now, having reached fhe franscendenf cynicism which only a boy of fiffeen can affain. He was paddling a canoe, fhis earlier Me, and seeking fo im- press fhe girl in fhe bow wifh all fhe wisdom and excellence of his years. He was clever and gay, fhis fellow, and sure and very biffer. He had lived and suffered and grown fired, and now he was very glib, and rafher bored wifh fhe whole dreary business. In fhe middle of a mosf sagacious ufferance, his voice, which had iusf reached fhe uncerfain sfafe, wenf sailing up fo a shrill soprano, wavered, and slid down shakily fo a rolling bass. If was a fragic momenf. And I wondered how many more fimes in my life l'd look info fhe mirror and laugh. Cadei Lieuienani-Colonel SENIOR CIRCUIT OW fhaf we're graduafing and prob- ably won'f be hanging around fhe be- loved Chem. labs, 'n fhe Liffle Theafer, 'n fhe publicafions room, 'n McMas+er's office anymore, we mighl' as well own up fhaf we were Sophomores-in facf, fhe besf cargo of Sophomores ever shipped info Technical- 'way back in January, l93I. Awed by fales of fhe elevafors and fhe swimming pool, we proved fo be quife fhe dearesf liffle scrubs fo upper classmen. Buf, somehow we skimmed fhrough geo- mefry, and, fhoroughly in love wifh Tech, we began fo show off in our iunior year as we found ourselves in fhe swing of sfudenf ac- fivifies. Wi+h Alma London, class presidenf in fhe fall of I932, we parficipafed in Junior Day, held minor parfs in fhe opera, Bells of Capisfrano, and in fhe producfion of Ham- let Rufh File and Graham Judge headed fhe Alpha Sociefy, Junior honor club, which has since been disbanded. Alfhough deep in sfudies, we were defi- nifely affached fo school inferesfs by our low senior ferm: Alma London, as Commis- sioner of Honor Acfivifies, was our only represenfafive on fhe Execufive Board. Helen Rognas for her arf work, and Walfer Wrighf for an original play, won recognifion in fhe Scholasfic Nafional High School Awards in March. Our class officers fhaf ferm were Leonard Gabrielson, Wayne Thompson, and Norman Schlegal. Then fhe June graduafes carried away fheir sheepskins, leaving fhe building clear for our supremacy. Wifh only sevenfeen weeks fo be high seniors, sfill we accomplished much, placing Bill Harman as our prexy, and enioying fo ifs fullesf measure our lasl' ferm. Acfion was our fheme. So whaf? So fhe High Senior foofball squad broke fhe fie iinx of fhe pasi' fwo years. Under Capfain Graham Judge, Coach Orville Peferson, and Manager Law- rence O'Driscoll fhe boys came fhrough wifh a 6-0 vicfory over fhe Lows in fhe annual Senior Day grid +il+. Alfred Perlin, Lucrefia Novak, Alma London, and Jim Allen wifh fheir commiffees, combined fo puf over fare- well senior acfivifies deserving of fhe praise and fhanks of fheir classmafes. To Technical, in foken of ifs kindly care, ifs encouragemenf, and ifs many friendships fhe class leaves a fund for improvemenfs of fhe Liffle Theafer and fhe sfage of fhe main audi- forium. The empfy-in-fhe-sfomach feeling common iusf before reporf cards we be- queafh fo fhe oncoming High Senior class. Being generous, we fhrow in, also, fhe rare fhrill of an unexpecfed A . And fo our feachers we leave our chewing gum lslighfly worse for wearl and our flunked fesfs-fo re- member us by. lTo fhe nexf edifor of Senior Memories lilies and an epifaphll For fhe lasf fime as fhe class of December, I933, we have played, and dined, and danced fogefher. Joyful fo have reached our goal, yef regrefful fo leave behind fhe happy days spenf here, we pause in a lasf salufafion, Hail, all hail! fo Technical High School. ZENIOR MEMORIES We sfand io meet A new sunrise! DECEMBER Q.. IQ!! A FLASH LIGHT OF FAQ SPORTS HIS ferm saw a Tech foofball feam which seemed desfined fo decorafe fhe cellar posifion in fhe O. A. L. sfandings, rise in fhe final weeks of fhe season fo capfure fif+h place away from her ancienf rival, Mc- Clymonds. The rapid gain in games won may be affribufed fo fhe fine show of fighf and feam spirif. Pracfice season opened wifh a I3-6 win over a weak Piffsburg feam, followed by a convincing I2-0 win by fhe Berkeley Yellow- iackefs, fheir sevenfh in a row againsf fhe Bulldogs. Meefing fheir fhree greafesf rivals in fhe O. A. L.-Oakland, Universify, and Mack -in fhe opening filfs, The Broad- wayans fook fhree on fhe chin, going down for fhe counf I9-0, 7-0, I3-7. A buoying up of spirifs came wifh a score- less fie, when fhe Purple and Gold mef an inoffensive feam from San Leandro. The move gafhered impefus wifh a crushing I9-0 win over Crusaders from Casflemonf and a I2-0 vicfory over a highly-favored Roosevelf feam. Anofher surprise followed, when fhe second-place Fremonfers were held fo a no- poinf fie. In fhe Easf-Wesf game Tech and San Leandro combined fo puf over fhe mosf fhrilling and well-played quarfer of fhe day, each feam scoring once. Tech was given no supporf from fhe Wesf, and fhe Easf subse- quenfly won ouf, 20-7. Among players receiving acclaim fhrough- ouf fhe cify were Capfain Graham Judge, Julius Squarzino, Bill Mafheson, Louis Re- peffo, and Mario Maccario. Coach Leroy Sharp, pleased wifh fhe spirif of fhis year's feam, has a fine bunch leff fo go ouf affer a possible O. A. L. championship nexf fall. Af fhe beginning of fhe baskefball season Coach Al Kyfe found many promising hoop- sfers who should come close fo winning a peg for fhe war club. Kyfe will probably look fo Fulmer, Bradshaw, Doran, Anficivich, Elmore, Specfor, and Basso for mosf of fhe hard work fhis ferm. The squad, which is small, should be one of fhe fasfesf in fhe League. RQOQTQQ MANELIVERS HE TECHNICAL BATTALICN, com- manded by Cadef Lieufenanf-Colonel Harrison Rowe, finishes a successful semesfer of fraining and varied acfivifies.
