Dear Class of January l'-958, l Li W ln recognition of the help Mrs. Patricia Kelly has will- ingly given the students of Oakland High School, we, the Oaken Bucket staff extend to her our special thanks. She has helped the students by supplying them with information about student activities and by doing extra secretarial work for them. Mrs. Kelly has also volunteered helpful sugges- tions when called upon to do so. Without her assistance many student organizations would not have functioned so smoothly. lflz Tulehfe Zomueloz MRS. MYRTLE D. YATES Fall H12 Counselor Four interesting and challenging years ago you students from McChesney entered Oakland High School in the ninth grade, and one year later you were joined by a group of tenth graders from Bret Harte, Roosevelt, Westlake and other junior high schools. Three years have passed rapidly and you have grown in stature, poise, and self confidence. You have gained in knowledge and in your ability to get along with people. You have now entered a new period in your self development. Whether your goal is to have more formal education or to go immediately on the job, may you realize that your education is not ended. You will go on acquiring knowledge. The measure of your success and happiness will be determined by your desire and ability to take responsibility, to do a job well, to re- spect the rights of other people, and to get along with them. I have enjoyed working with you and I wish you all success and happiness in the years to come. Sincerely, Myrtle D. Yates llcblz Tulehfe lblllldlgdifld Dear Class of June l958: lt is difficult for a counselor to say good-by to a class and wave its members off on graduation night. Four years of working and playing together, four years of sharing the joys and the sorrows of high school life have made us close friends. You have been fortunate to have been able to attend Oakland High School. At no other high school could you have been better prepared for life. Your teachers have been genuinely interested in your prob- lerrlsi your plans for the future and your ultimate goals In Ie. When you leave, no other class can take your place. Each class must make its own contribution to the history of Oakland High School. It is a record such as your class has made, combined with the personal satisfaction that you have given to me, that makes it possible for me to face a new class next year and start again the tremendous job of counseling. I am proud of your accomplishments. I am going to miss you as individuals and as a class. Adios, Mis Amigos! JOVITA E. FITZGERALD MISS .IOVITA E. FITZGERALD Hl2 Counselor To the graduating seniors: The Class of June, l958, is at the end of that long, hard twelve-year pull and now, graduation. I am privileged to have had the opportunity of working with you and guidirig you in your final year, I am proud that you sought my counsel so readily when there was a counseling change, I am fortunate in knowing you I and having had your association. With your achieve MR. ARTHUR P. OLSEN H12 Counalor ment and talent there are many great careers before I you. Keep a firm faith in yourself and the direction ,- you are going. I join my colleague, Miss Fitzgerald, who has meant so much to all of you, in wishing you health happiness, and success in your future years. Sincerely, ARTHUR OLSEN sk Yew' ex xxx x. Just beginning to taste the flavor of being full-fledged high school students, the sophomores, class of June l96O, were led by Terry Clarke, fall president, and Bob Gil- lespie, spring prexy. This being the largest class at O.H.S., the sophs held a party in November in which talented members of the class provided en- tertain'ment. There were also refreshments and dancing. The Soph Hop, first of four dances to be given by this class to the student body, was presented in April. The theme of the dance was Spring Fever, and was under the lea- dership of social chairman Carol Landis. Decorations consisted of flowers hung from mobiles and large bees and butterflies. The sophomores are well under way in digging their roots into O.H.S. as they have already started building up a treasury for their glorious senior year. An honor quickly heaped on the laps of the class was the Oaken Bucket dance tro- phy for the highest percentage of attendance at the dance. The first freshman get-together was a class party, held in March. The party was planned by Bob Holman and Kathi McCon- nell. Proper attire was Ivy League apparel and entertainment was provided by class members. Dancing and refreshments rounded out the evening. A graduation party is planned in June as the freshman are now ready to enter the big, bad realms of high school and proceed on as sophomores. The Wildcats' record was two wins and four defeats in over-all play which included a one-win, three-loss conference record, thus putting the 'Cats in a third place tie with the McClymonds' Warriors in the O.A.L. standings. The season's curtain-raiser was against Piedmont in which the Oaklanders emerged triumphant, l-4-l3, Mr, Flu made his most fatal strike just before the practice en- counter against South San Francisco, and coupled with the rain, the game was cancelled. Thus the Wildcats were without valuable game competition and experience. Castlemont's Knights, inevitable champions of the O.A.l.., captured a I9-I2 decis- ion over the Paul Berger-coached gridders in the first league game. Technical came up fast in the second half to conquer the 'Cats, 25-l9. The McClymonds tilt, played under threatening skies, was about as close as they get, with the Wildcats edging the Warriors, 7-6. This victory accounted for the only league triumph by the Oakland varsity. ln an interconference affair, the rough-tough El Cerrito Gauchos whipped the 'Cats, ZO-l2. The final league and season struggle versus Fremont proved fatal as the Tigers rose victorious, I3-6. All was not lost, though, as halfback Pete Rasmussen and center Bob Young received first string berths on the all-city team, John Lemke, end, Stacy Papagiannis, guard, and Bob Gilmore, fullback, placed on the second unit. JUNIOR VARSITY SUMMARY ' Tying for first place with Castlemont, the Oakland junior varsity squad accumulated a league record of three wins and one defeat. The Kittens opened the O. A, L. by losing to Castlemont's Knights, 6-O. Bouncing back from this defeat, the Kittens pul- verized the Bullpups from Technical by a score of 18-O. To prove that the shellacking was no fluke, the Oaklanders took on Fre- mont and conquered them, I2-6. The Kittens ended the year with a roar as they held off and massacred the McClymonds' Braves, 25-O. In three practice encounters, the Oakland jayvees lost to Castro Valley, 25-O, got skunked by San Lorenzo, 27-O and were smothered by EI Cerrito, 25-O. The Wildcats, inspired by Bob Amauric and Vance Barnes, whipped through a seven game practice slate, losing only to El Cerrito and Berkeley, two of the top quintets in Northern California. Starting league play, the Cats were buried by the champion McCIymonds Warriors, 55-28. ln the two other league contests, the Oaklanders lost 64-46, and 74-44. Going against Castlemont, the Wildcats won two, 58-46 and 44-42, and lost one by 44-40. Oakland dumped Fremont twice, 45-42 and 45-24 while losing 44-34. The Tech Bulldogs captured two of the three conference encounters against the Wildcats. Oakland lost the two away games, 40-32 and 40-36 while they won at home 4l -24. Topping the season off triumphantly, the Wild- cat five dumped the alumni by a count of 48-37. Throughout the season, Oakland was led by the fanciful play of Vance Barnes, while Bob Amauric, a midterm graduate, led the Oaklanders in scor- ing with ll7 points. The Cat matmen placed one first place, one second place, six third places and three fourth places in the final wrestling meet which determined the Oaklanders' position, Placing first in the l22-pound division and placing second in the l35-pound division were Buddy Mancuso and John Leatherman, the two Wildcat all-city men. Third position honors went to Larry Davies, Satoshi Kuritsubo, Buford Bolin, George Tamura, Glen Scrimger, and Gene Van Horn. The three grapplers who placed fourth were Lowell Carradine, Charles Flukey, and Yves Lachau, Preston Thompson, Mac Truman, Buddy Mancuso, Yves Lachau, John Leatherman, and Gene Van Horn are the only seniors on the Wildcat wrestling team. Frank Bermudez, a junior, and Sopho- more Pat Warnecke are the two competing A gymnasts, The remainder of the squad participates in the B bracket. Coach John Zorovich has no seniors on the team, thus the Cats are high in spirits as they await next year. V Oakland, along with Fremont, belongs to the Northern California Gymnastics League, as the Wildcats and Tigers are the only O.A.L. schools who feature gymnastic teams. Warnecke, thus far, has shown great promise as he competes in the rope climb, the flying rings, and the hori- zontal bars. Bermudez, whose specialty is the rope climb, also takes a shot at the flying rings. Gymnasts are judged upon the routines performed, with 50 per cent counted for execution, and 'SO per cent counted for difficulty. I MR. SWIMMING PREVIEW Oakland High's swimming squad, a second place finisher last year, has aspirations of topping the league this season. With but six seniors and the rest of the team juniors and sophomores, the Wildcats are looking forward to a bright future. The spirit is high and 'desire is present as the Cat swimmers show great hustle in practice. Heading the list of returning lettermen are Chuck Bloom- field, diver, Steve Engles, butterfly strokesman, and Jeff Rogers, a backstroker. Also returning to swim this year will be Bruce Macpherson, a free stylist, backstroker Loren Gill and utility man Steve Twigg. Two senior letter winners returning are Steve Johnson and Dick Nelson, both free stylists. Showing great promise for future years are two sophomores-Denny Dillaha, and Jim Baird. The Wildcat mermen, with an air of confidence and pocket- ful of experience, are looking ahead to overtake Castlemont for the O.A.L. title. The Knights, last year's champs, will provide the Cats with the toughest competition. Also slated to meet the Wildcats in league meets are Fremont and Technical. ll2 wi - ix M A , 25 : W . ,A I -fw.,m ' -ii.. 'Y . ,JV E 'fn Nw f. ww? wh? 5 .L va B M -ef? 4 J? JOHN MARKS Couch TENNIS PREVIEW With several returning lettermen to bolster the Wildcat cause, Oakland's tennis team has high hopes of sweeping off with the O.A.L. crown this year. Alan Rebensdorf, Eddie Bienek, and Frank Kovacs are three returning letter winners who are playing singles for the Cats. Tim Ruschin also plays singles. Teaming as doubles are Mike Phelan and Pete Huie, Lin- coln Mintz and Winston Wood, and Brad Jue and Tom Liles. Coach John Marks has high aspirations for this racket squad as they have shown signs of being a winning team. Rebensdorf and Bienek have shown consistently their ability and are currently playing in the top two positions on the squad. Positions on the tennis team are of a fluctuating nature as the boys challenge each other and end up in the positions which they are playing as a result of the challenges. lzo ' GOLF TEAM: left to right: Stan Lennox, Duncan Kilpatrick, Ken Irwin, Howard Gladman, Larry Edwards, Jack Vondetti. GOLF PREVIEW The Oakland golf team will again be in strong contention for the O.A.L. golf title, Returning from last year's team, which finished a strong second, will be five lettermen and four all-city sharp-shooters. Fighting it out for first position will be Ken Irwin and Larry Edwards, both on last' year's all-city squad. Co-captains Howard Gladman and Stan Lennox, also all-city members, will hack away for third position. Kent Holland, Duncan Kilpatrick, Ron Nelson, and Jack Vendetti will battle it out for the fifth and sixth men. Of the four, Ron is the only returning letter- man. Scheduled to meet the Wildcat linksmen this year are the Oakland Junior College and Bishop O'Dowd High squads. In the regular O.A.L. season, the divot makers are slated to meet Fremont, Technical, and Castlemont, last year's cham- pion. Barring unforeseen difficulties, the Wildcat linkers should bring home their first O.A.L. golf crown. MR. ROBERT J. HOPKINS, SR Sponsor l2l A i Qi 1 ASSEMBLY ADVISORY: Front Row, left to right: J.
