Accordingly, such an organization was formed. It elected the following leaders: Douglas Brothers as President, Luil Anthony as Vice-President: The Secretary was Lee VanPelt, and the Treasurer was Claren Anthony. Students from grade eight to twelve make up the membership of the O. H. S. Science Club. All students are not scientists, but most students are interested in things of science. Every day in newspapers and magazines there are stories about science. These stories tell of the discoveries that scientists are making about the world in which we live. Some of these discoveries are so important that they change our lives, and the lives of millions of other people. It is the purpose of the science club to help its members and the members of the high school to better understand the science they read and hear about in everyday life. If we under- stand better the things of science about us we cannot help but be better thinkers, and as a result, better workers. Social Studies Club President ------------------------------- Ray Bills Vice-President -------------------- Donald Williams Secretary --------------------------- Donna Edwards Treasurer ---------------------------- James Norton Advisor --------------------------------- Mr. Beebe The purpose of the Social Studies Club is to promote an interest in higher types of assembly programs. A variety of entertainment is presented throughout the year, some of which is educational and some in a more humorous vein. The Social Studies Club has been active since 1931. The first officers were: Paul Echkardt-President, Thelma Skinner-Vice-Presi- dent, Ruth Slocum-Secretary, Dorothy Connors-Treasurer. The twenty members of the present club have co-operated in the presentation of six programs during this school term. Co-operation between members of the Social Studies Club and members of the other clubs is encouraged, thus promoting good citizenship, a major aim of the Social Science group. We have continued through the years to hold the loftiest ideals of womanhood before the girls of our school and to try to maintain these precepts in our daily life. Our weekly club program combines social and educational activities and once a year for a seven week's course we have a special study of problems confronting the girls of today and means of surmounting old-yet-new difficulties. If we can continue in the future as we have in the past, our club will give to the girls a touch of extra curricular activity that will be stimulat ing and memorable. H i-Y Club President ----------------------------- Edward Mroz Vice-President --------------------- Robert Mallery Secretary ------------------------------- Ray Bills Treasurer ---------------------------- Gerald Parks Advisor -------------------------------- Mr. Button HHe that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.H Realizing the incompleteness of an education given wholly to the temporal things of life, the leaders of the Hi-Y movement endeavor through the teaching of Clean Speech, Clean Sports, Clean Scholar- ship, and Clean Living to promote the spiritual growth of young men. The Oakland High School Hi-Y Club was instituted in 1929 by members of the Hop Bottom Hi-Y Club. The following officers were installed: President, Clarence Osterhoutg Vice-President, Austin Remvilleg Secretary, Carl Areyg Treasurer, Leslie Pettis. The outstanding teachings of the Hi-Y Club are to CREATE and MAINTAIN a good character and to advance Christian ideals of human brotherhood and in a small way show to a busy world that to some young people an interest in things of the Spirit is still present?
