M After several unsuccessful attempts by the General Baptist denomination to establish a Seminary of Learning in the area of Southern Indiana, Colonel William A. Cockrum donated a ten-acre tract of land in Oakland City on August 5, 1885. The land was given with the understanding that the citizens of Oakland City and vicinity would erect a college building containing at least fifteen rooms. Upon completion of such a building, the General Association of General Baptists was to assume responsibility for endowing the school. A charter was granted by the state of Indiana in 1885. The first person to receive a baccalaureate degree from Oakland City College was William P. Dearing who was elected the second President of the institution in 1903. He served as President until 1945.
