AND PHILOSOPHY Mr. Heyn teaches American Literature, World Literature, and Modern Communications to juniors. One of these are the required English courses for the 3rd year of school. Poetry and novels are read in each class, a skills book is used to sharpen English skills. Mythology is studied in Word Lit., and David Cop-perfield, an 800 page book is read. Miss O’Neil and Mrs. Dehn round out the group of teachers in the English Department. They both teach a general English course to Sophomores. Plays, like McBeth and Our Town, are studied. Books like “To Kill a Mockingbird” are read. The “Nova” book is used as a text, along with a skills book. Top: C. Heinz gives news in third hour Social Problems. Our Social Science department is headed by Mr. Gruenwald who instructs our seniors on the world’s Social Problems. Interesting topics are discussed where the student is able to share his opinion. Current news events are analyzed every day. Mr. Gruenwald also teaches a World History course to the 10th graders. Weekly quizzes are emphasized, as are the learning of key terms and personalities. Above: B. Dean writes out his assignment in Composition. Mr. Gruenwald gives a lecture in sixth hour Social Problems. FACT, FICTION, Mrs. Thompson teaches Freshmen English. A major requirement is a heavily researched, footnoted term paper. Huckleberry Finn is read and one quarter is spent delivering speeches. She also teaches U.S. History to 11th grades; they study American history from 1500 to the present. A book review in chapter or book form is required every marking period. The book, “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair is read. 8

Espanol Spanish classes are one credit and are electives for students to take. The courses are all one year long. There are three levels of Spanish I,II, and Advanced Spanish. Spanish I is an introduction to grammar, verb tenses, sentences, and dialogues. Spanish II is a step higher. It teaches more vocabu- lary and language phases. Advanced Spanish is for students with two years of Spanish. This class focuses on advanced readings and writings. Materials for classes are the language lab, Spanish magazines, and text books. Mrs. Dehn; Mrs. Dehn has been a teacher at Oakfield High School for 16 years. Her classes are Spanish I, II, and III. She also teaches a sophomore English class. Mrs. Dehn has a great sense of humor, is cheerful, and friendly. She is easy to talk to, a good listener, and supportive of others.
