Our Social Science department is headed by Mr. Gruenwald who instructs our seniors on the world’s Social Problems. Interesting topics are discussed where the student is able to share his opinion. Current news events are analyzed every day. Mr. Gruenwald also teaches a World History course to the 10th graders. Weekly quizzes are emphasized, as are the learning of key terms and personalities. A term paper is required on a topic discussed every quarter. ii ft Upper left: T. Holz gives the news in sixth hour Social Problems. Upper right: T. Schimdt takes notes in third hour Social Problems. Above: B. Dean writes out his assignment in Composition. Mr. Gruenwald gives a lecture in sixth hour Social Problems. FACT, FICTION, Mrs. Thompson teaches Freshmen English. A major requirement is a heavily researched, footnoted term paper. Huckleberry Finn is read and one quarter is spent delivering speeches. She also teaches U.S. History to 11th grades; they study American history from 1500 to the present. A book review in chapter or book form is required every marking period. The book, “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair is read. 8

AN EVER-EXPANDING FIELD Mr. Neinhouse, Mr. Messner, and Mr. Hamilton teach the science classes at OHS. Mr. Hamilton teaches Biology for freshmen, plus Advanced Biology and Conservation. Mr. Neinhouse teaches Physical Science for sophomores, plus Chemistry. Mr. Messner teaches Physics, plus Electronics. Biology and Physical Science are required. As a junior you can take Chemistry and then as a senior you can take Physics. Science is a very large field. There is never a right or wrong answer because new discoveries are always being made. Top left: T. Kuslits and R. Bovee examine their fungi specimen while the rest of the class tries to find theirs. Top right: D. Tedford and D. Dowidat calculate the density of various objects. Upper left: R. Baehler, Mr. Nienhouse, and A. Wendt try to figure out the volume for a cylinder. Above: K. Patchett and J. Wolf measure a cube and T. Cobb and L. Jewson calculate the mass of an object. Left: T. Messner, C. Huck, and J. Guenther are doing an experiment in Physics.

AND PHILOSOPHY Mr. Heyn teaches American Literature, World Literature, and Modern Communications to juniors. One of these are the required English courses for the 3rd year of school. Poetry and novels are read in each class, a skills book is used to sharpen English skills. Mythology is studied in Word Lit., and David Cop-perfield, an 800 page book is read. Miss O’Neil and Mrs. Dehn round out the group of teachers in the English Department. They both teach a general English course to Sophomores. Plays, like McBeth and Our Town, are studied. Books like “To Kill a Mockingbird” are read. The “Nova” book is used as a text, along with a skills book. Top: C. Heinz gives news in third hour Social Problems.
