Oak Leaves 19 5______ Oakfield High School Oakfield, Wisconsin mtAdvisor:M Mrs. Linda Eschenbauch Editor: Carol Fisher Business Manager: Joel Schaefer Staff: Lynnette Guell Shelly Jorgensen Sharon Rymer Doreen Donovan Sherry Lotter Harold Mathieu Cindy Mast Chris Myers In 1981 Oakfield High School welcomed a group of eager young faces called the Class of 1985. Since then ive have become the seniors that were so impressive to us that first year. Each of us has grown and learned from each other and especially from the faculty here at OHS. We wish to thank all of you who have made our past four years memorable and productive. It is with great pleasure, respect, and thanks that the Class of 1985 dedicates this edition of Oak Leaves to an individual who has shown a commitment to teaching both in and out of the classroom. Since our first days of high school, Mr. John Hamilton has been respected in our hearts as an educator and as a friend. He has taught us sportsmanship in every aspect of life. When we lost the eagerness to learn, he gave us encouragement. In appreciation of the dedication that you have shown us, ive dedicate our yearbook to you, Coach Hamilton. 2 DEDICATION Special Moments Prom: Against Gary Bibow and Debbie Wietor Tom Dineen and Sherri Hilbert John Krause and Therese liolz Rick Schmidt and Carrie Holt Scott Towne and Gina Ryan Matt Yates and Michelle Mayhew The 1984 Junior Prom was held on May 5. “Against All Odds” played in the background as King Blair Krueger crowned Queen Wendy Burgess. We will all miss Doreen, and even though the hurt felt because of the sudden tragedy that took her will probably never leave us, we can console ourseives with our fond and happy memories of her and the advice she left behind: “Life is short no matter how much time ya got to live, so live each day as your last... Then you will realize it really goes much too fast.” Doreen Donovan Sherry hotter: “She'll always hold a special place in my heart and many others. She was the best friend anyone could ever ask for. Linda Eschenbauch: “I think that if Doreen could tell us one thing right now, it would be to keep smiling. Her attitude toward life reflected this, and she left us many happy memories.” Cindy Nast: “Doreen was one of my best friends. She was easy to talk to and always ready to iisten. She knew more about friendship and life than most people will ever know.” Lynne Dehn: “I remember Doreen as a lively girl who enjoyed writing poems. She had the kind of personality and smile that made people happy. 16 DOREEN sjoruag Jacob Atzen Cherie Bebow % Jim Battig Gary Bibow Dan Beaudreau Polly Bliss Brett Brauer Wendy Brotherton Todd Brubach 18 SENIORS Wendy Burgess Jarrod Canham Deidra Conger Carol Fisher Tom Dineen B.J. Hi From January 1985 to January 1986, Joel Schaefer will be a Rotary foreign exchange student in Zimbabwe, Africa. He lives in the capital city of Harare and will have three different families, two being the de Chassart’s and the Colhoun's. He attends St. George’s College which is an all boy’s Catholic school. Joel will see such landmarks as Victoria Falls, Hwangie National Park, Mana Pods, Lake Kariba, Bumi Hills, and Inyanga. In addition, Joel will tour the country of South Africa. The correspondence that OHS has received from Joel indicates that he is having the greatest experience of his life. EXCHANGE STUDENT 33 Denmark is a small country with a population of 5.1 million people. It is located just north of West Germany as part of the Scandinavian countries. The climate is temperate coast climate, or in other words, it is not as cold in the winter or as warm in the summer as in Wisconsin, caused by the Baltic Sea. I live on the Island “Fyn” in the 750 year old town of Faaborg, which is about half the size of Fond du Lac. In 1984 I applied to become an exchange student through the Rotary organization, which accepted me immediately (of course!!), and I chose to go to the U.S. because of my interests in the English language, sports (I do a lot of sailing and wind surfing), and the American culture. Speaking Engh'sh instead of Danish has not caused major problems for me because I have had three years of German, one year of Latin and one year of French. My parents are high school teachers. My dad teaches Engh'sh and Social Problems and my mom teaches French, German, and Danish. The fourth member of our little family is my sister, Lise, who is 15 years old. Being hosted by the Fond du Lac Rotary Ciub and staying in Oakfield has resulted in a great year that I shall never regret nor forget. Oakfield High School's teachers and students have made it as easy and as perfect as ever possible for a foreign exchange student to feel at home.” I would also like to thank the Schaefer, Fisher, and Messner families for hosting a tall and strange Dane. Jacob Atzen 34 EXCHANGE STUDENT Exchange Students The months here are going faster than in my school in Yugoslavia. Oakfield is really a very nice community for living, but it is a big difference between the life in a city with a very storming evening and night atmosphere and the quiet evenings in a small village. This is a new wonderful life experience for me. I will always have beautiful memories about the months when I lived and shared with you in good and bad. My biggest goal when I arrived at OHS was to find many good friends who would understand and really like me. I’m coming from the North-Yugoslavian city of Maribor with 170,000 citizens, a strong, cultural and industrial center in the country. I have one sister. Her name is Polona and she attends the 5th grade of the Middle School. My dad is an architect and works for a construction company. My mom is the co-owner of a printing copying company. We share the household with my grandfather Beno and my grandmother Karolina. I consider my parents to be the two most beautiful people in the world. I say “thank-you to Oakfield, OHS, the football and basketball teams, the AFS chapter, the teachers, and of course—the best family in America—the Mies’s. Thank-you! You gave me something special. Andrei Krume EXCHANGE STUDENT 35 Band Members Tour Europe In the summer of 1984 two seniors, Gary Bibow and Carol Fisher, toured Europe with the American Musical Ambassadors Concert Band. Before the tour they rehearsed in New York City with 100 other band members from around the country. They traveled to Engeiberg, Lucerne, and Lugano, Switzerland, Venice and Milan, Italy, Innsbruck and Salzburg, Austria, Berchtesgaden and Frankfort, West Germany, and were hosted in the homes of the people of Ede, Holland before visiting Amsterdam. They concluded their tour with a four day stay in London, England where they saw Windsor Castle, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, and Westminster Abbey. AFS CLUB 63 FHA—A Year “Dynamic Dimensions—Confronting Challenges” ... that's quite a theme for a group of high school FHAers. But that’s the state theme this year and it fits this group of girls. Our first challenge for the year was to plan an interesting schedule of events. They confronted that challenge and won. They began the year with a potluck supper to get to know our new freshman. They also helped a group of 3-7 year olds celebrate with a Halloween party. The group also was able to tour the maternity ward at St. Agnes Hospital. We celebrated X-Mas with a X-Mas party and had a holiday bake-sale at the High School Christmas Concert. We made the residents at Bolling Meadows happy by entertaining there in January. We celebrated FHA Week in February and made everyone’s Valentine Day special by selling personalized carnations. A select four represented the Oakfield FHA at the State Convention in April. We topped off the year with a banquet to honor our worthy members and their parents. Our last challenge was to have some fun, so we took a field trip with the Art Club in May. Each one of these students confronted the challenge of being an active member... and they each met that challenge! Miss Johnson of Challenges FHA —Front row: Miss Johnson. L. Nolan. H. Kinlzier. M. They included a car wash for the Ronald McDonald House, a bowlathon for Muscular Dystrophy, donating money for the school name sign, purchase of the Christmas tree for the high school, and donating money toward a computer for the Ag department. This year we hosted the district speaking contest and had a national winner in the Ag computer program. We talked to the eighth grade students about taking Vo-Ag and held an animal day for the Belle Reynolds students. Our fund raisers included the corn plot, and the selling of stuffed animals. The chapter had a Christmas party, picnic, and went canoeing. Mrs. Retzleff FHA —Front row: R. Marlin, A. Mittelstadte, . Bovee, . Rickert. Last row: R. Krug, R. Brace, B. Abitz, M. Wirtz, T. We also sold refreshments at the girls basketball games and some wrestling events. We use these funds for various club activities including: donations for foreign exchange students letter jackets, school activity sign, field trip to Milwaukee Museum, and Science, Math, and Computer Awards. We are considering sponsoring other events such as a tooth pick bridge building contest, and another field trip-possibly to the Museum of Science and Engineering in Chicago, with a club picnic at the end of the year. The club also bought some new science equipment including two new toilet plungers for drawing an ellipse on the chalk board. We ate alot in the cafeteria and visited two former graduates attending the University. We are looking forwrd to our conference math meet. We will take a varsity and a f.V. team. We are going to practice very hard so that we take the conference title this year. We will also attend the state math meet.
