Therefore, we would like to dedicate this yearbook to him. We can see in him a genuine interest for all the students. Whether he is tactfully shouting plays on the basketball court, or scolding a participant in senior skip day, he always has our well-being in mind. Now, Mr. Baeten, it’s our turn to tell you how meaningful your guidance has been and to thank you for helping us begin to meet the full potential of our abilities and dreams. 2 STEVE ANDRYSCZYK PAT AUSTIN NOTHING WE CANT DO ’CAUSE IWE’RE THE CLASS OF ’82 BILL BEBOW JOLENE CONKLIN PAUL DINEEN RODNEY DEWITZ CAROL FLOOD SCHOOL COLORS: ORANGE AND BLACK TODD FLATH PAT GAGE SHELLY FROST WAYNE GEORGE LISA GALBRAITH LINDA GILLEN KRIS GILBERTSON BARB GUELL I SHALL PASS THRU THIS WORLD BUT ONCE. In addition to the German Feast and Music Fest presented in November, the Chorus presented the annual Winter and Spring Concerts. Selected members participated in the Honors Chorus held in January at Campbellsport and in Solo-Ensemble competition held in March at Markesan. Audiences at football games, basketball games, parades, and concerts were entertained by the OHS Band throughout the school year. Band members are to be commended for their dedication to enriching people’s lives through their music. .1 35 Forensics, A Chance to Grow. The Oakfield High School forensics team greeted the 1982 season with anticipation. As in past years, the team was a combination of veterans and rookies. Forensics, giving team members a chance to make new friends as well as to develope poise and a commanding presence, gives participants a valuable opportunity to grow in speaking skills. OHS really has a Math Team! Students have been in training in school for 9-12 years now—just getting ready for the two big meets that we will attend. In March we travel to Slinger for the small school math competition, and in April the State meet in Milwaukee. Mr. Messner again promises a steak dinner to the entire team if they come in 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any class competition. As in past years we expect to take the conference championship numbers down. Math Four students have been working puzzle problems all year in preparation and Miss Verdegan and Mr. Sandburg are priming the underclassmen. Computers: Fall—81—Special—Another Apple arrives. We now have three 48K Apple Computers, three monitors, four disk drives, one printer, and the first class of eager students trying to learn how to press the right keys to make that machine do what you want it to. Everyone, including the two instructors, learned a great deal. The computers were kept busy most hours of every day. In the fall we entered a computer programming contest at MSOE. We all feel that computers are going to be very important and much used in years to come. The course is getting us ready for the computer revolution. Computer Team: Back Row; K. Green, |. Kottke, S. We sold refreshments during the year for softball, football and basketball games and some wrestling meets. The money raised was used for club trips, school award, and purchasing computer supplies. In the Fall we sponsored a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and the UW Madison. We will also sponsor other activities and are looking forward to our annual Spring picnic. It is set for any person in the community that is interested in supporting and promoting the FFA and agriculture. We also began our own chapter newsletter to be sent to parents, alumni members, and agribusinessmen in the Oakfield area. It provides information on the agriculture department, the FFA, and the Alumni. Members were involved in several judging contests throughout the year. We also participated in volleyball games with other FFA chapters. Our fund raisers included selling rat bait, planting and harvesting of the com plot, and selling calendar ads. If you say, a group of high schools that set records in making money, where boys work with girls in homemaking skills, sharing enthusiasm and desire to make life a bit better for us all—then you have described Oakfield's F.H.A.!!! WOW—what an active group. Some of the highlights have included Thanksgiving night for the youngsters in our community, Christmas Caroling, Canoeing, State Convention, March of Dimes Conference, national F.H.A. week and of course, the Spring Banquet. Our basic projects were Homecoming Roses, Snow Dolls, Christmas Ornaments and colored and decorated eggs for Easter. Our Homecoming and Christmas sales went profitably. We also had a project for St. Patrick’s Day and Valentine’s Day. The money we make this year will go towards a trip to the Madison Art Center or the Chicago Museum of Art. The Art Club has progressed significantly in the past years. We have hopes for even greater progress in the future. Musical selections were performed by 27 members of the OHS Chorus, plus a woodwin quartet and a polka band from the OHS Band. All were dressed in costumes representative of the German theme. The authentic German menu was lentil soup rye bread, beef sauerbraten, sweet sour red cabbage, potato dumplings, and mocha torte. The success of the evening was well-worth the long hours and effort. Why don’t they call it a ketchup? It was also the year of Garfield and hearing digital watches beeping in the silences of classes. (Especially in Mr. Gruenwald's!) Algebra 1—This course is alot like General Math only a little bit more bizarre. The basic idea is to find out what x is. The catch is. that as soon as you do. they change it to something else. Say. could I have one of your school pictures. Mildred? (sigh) Oh, I guess so! I think I've got a bent one here!” Question No.6—Name the four basic food groups. Answer—McDonald’s. Burger King, Wendy’s and Pizza Hut. Use the following in a sentence: 1.) Behoove Sentence: At the end of their legs, bees have little behooves. Question No. 7—If you have six logs, how many more logs do you need to make a cord? Answer—I know. I’ll look that up in my log table! Hi! I’m a geek. My friends know me as the wild man at the circus who bites off the heads of live chickens and snakes. But, you can just call me geek. Herman: Because it’s the last day of school, I got special permission to drive to school today! I’ll really look cool when Mary Sue sees me! As cool as you can look in a station wagon! Principal: I’d like to take this opportunity to thank this year’s graduating seniors for their wonderful class gift! Roughly one third of these girls are returning veterans from last year’s team, fifteen percent are transfer from softball, and fifty percent are new freshmen. Most of the girls are interested in middle distance running, like the 400 and 800 meter events. Our weakness will be in the field events, where we are averaging one girl per event. Along with the high percentage of veteran runners from last year, whose talent and example create the foundation for success, there is rumored to be quite a bit of talent among our new freshmen runners. Our success as a team this year will be totally dependent upon the willingness of our girls to work hard to improve their natural skills and to develop their endurance and technique, without which our natural talent will be largely wasted. The two keys are hard work and desire to win. I have no doubt about our ability to have an excellent season, conceivably the best ever on record. I will be expecting a good practice attitude from the girls, and dedication. They will work hard, have fun and get healthy. Karen Verdegan Girl's Track—Back Row, Left to Right: J. Williams. K. Each day they ran, regardless of the conditions of weather, road, and the threats of dog bites, to get themselves in shape so that they could represent OHS as participants in the Flyway Conference. “I have nothing but the highest regards for this year’s team. They have worked extremely hard in a sport which is often times unnoticed and unappreciated by many, with rewards few in number, and yet managed to smile when the race was over. Volleyball is the only sport where a player is penalized for the way a skill is performed. Therefore, experience is a must. This year we had three fine seniors, through their hard work and efforts, our final major factor took hold as the season progressed. It takes more than one “star”, it takes six good players and a strong bench to make a Volleyball team. One good play involves as many as three players, all performing legal hits, each player working to make their hit good so the next hit can be better, but above all it takes team understanding and team work. This year we placed second in conference and ended our season in good shape. 67 J.V. top row. left to right: S. Brotherton, C. Bebow, Mr. Rebedew, P. Bliss, K. Lutze, Bottom row: D. Clark, C. Coach Schreiner has retired after four successful seasons and the girls are trying to adjust to a different coach in 81-82 season. The team is working hard and displaying a good attitude.
