Parents and students need to realize the great variety and wealth of learning offered here--the many ways to begin fine careers and fulfilling lives. PLUS: Training in music, drama, public speaking, and publications. VISITORS WELCOME: Look around; see students doing such things as teaching a class, changing a tire, building a coffee table, making a dress, operating a calculator, planning a house, giving a sales demonstration, designing art objects, building a stereo--then realize the need for more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic. And if you stay after the last class you will note that the building remains very busy with students and teachers who stay for more study, clubs, sports, projects and activities. After supper, you will see more of the same. PICTURES, LEFT TO RIGHT, FROM TOP: Art student M. Pipping, student council meeting, typist Steve Kottke, chemists D. Rickert and J. The dance began at 9:00, and many people, young and old, entered the beautifully decorated gym. An out-of-sight evening was spent dancing to the heavy beat of the Rim Brandts. The main event of the evening was the Grand March, followed by the crowning of the Queen, Mary Lee Weinberger, by King Ron Collien. The Court of Honor danced to their theme song, We've Only Just Begun. At 1:00 the dancers left and the doors to the Prom were closed, but in the hearts of the people, the scene of the 1971 Prom will never be forgotten. Just Begun An Autumn Week of Football, SEATED: P. Yearbook completed--staff relaxes. YEARBOOK STAFF Margie Bovee Diane Collar Mary Laning Rose Laudolff Dave Ogle Sue Perry Gail Ruplinger Pearl Schneider Judy Vande Berg Barbara Waldson Debbie Waltz Mary Wiese Mr. McLean Starting in September the Yearbook staff begins to take pictures, write copy, and choose a theme for the Yearbook. This is done at meetings after school. While most of the staff is busy typing, drawing, and choosing pictures, others go out and sell ads to merchants to help reduce the cost of yearbooks to the students. The design of each page, including pictures, words and headlines is the creation of members of the staff. Though it all takes many hours after school, there is much satisfaction in seeing one's ideas come to life in the finished yearbook. Besides working after school, the staff also worked on a few vacation days, with lunch at MacDonald's. Some of the staff spent a day at the yearbook workshop in Neenah. The theme of our yearbook is Getting Together. We have featured some new pages, a lot of snapshots and humorus captions. The above picture shows the staff all tired out as they finally finish the last page of the yearbook. Girls + Sports = G.A.A. FIRST ROW: S. Perry, R. Laudolff, M. Gibson, L. Pipping, D. Kollman, M. TRAVELING TEAMS Girls who are interested in developing their athletic skill to a higher extent than afforded in Physical Education class or G.A.A. activities, turn to the traveling teams. The various teams are volleyball, basketball, badminton, baseball, and track. Here the girls must go through tryouts to be chosen on the teams. Those chosen will then attend practice sessions where they develop their skill, learn plays and strategy, and then put this knowledge to work through competition with neighboring schools. Through this activity, the girls learn emotional control and teamwork. An out-growth of the Girls Athletic Association, the traveling teams are now regulated by the W. I. A. A. and seriously compete with other schools. FIRST ROW: I. Burse, R. Laudolff, J. Oelke, M. Ruplinger. SECOND ROW: K. Rumbuc, M. Laning, B. Steinke, K. Sukowaty, L. Shady. THIRD ROW: D. Randall, S. Marschie, Coach Trushin-sky. Behind the strong running of Steve Yantz, the Oaks cross country team placed a respectable fifth in the conference. Steve placed second in the Fly way Conference, and went on to the state sectional. The season record was 3 wins and 5 losses. In spite of losses, the team spirit never failed and the boys put forth tremendous effort. Our team began two years ago with all freshman and sophomores, and all returned this year. They will all return again next year, to make the prospects look even brighter. --Coach Trushinsky KNEELING: R. Beck, D. Bell, D. Domke, J. Walgen-bach, M. Stolfus, Manager R. Kottke. STANDING: Manager R. Kottke, M. Potratz, D. Kottke, J. Erdman, S. Yantz, J. Kiser, Coach Hamilton. The track team was small in number, but displayed great desire and improvement as the season progressed. In dual meet competition the team achieved a 3-3 record. At the conference tournament they placed third with many good performances. In the state regional tournament at Ripon the team earned second place. Over the season all of the previous school records except six were broken and Mike Stollfus set two conference records. --Coach Hamilton Meet the O.H.S. Herculoids LEFT TO RIGHT: D. Pipping, R. Marshie, S. Yantz, S. O’Laire, S. Jerabek. Coached by A1 Trushinsky. Vadnais, S. Terrian, K. O'Laire, S. Hall, B. Smith, B. The team was small in number this year, making it difficult to win dual meets, but there were many individual successes, and the team did well at invitation-als. With a little luck, next year’s wrestling will increase, both in the size of the team and in the number of fans. Wrestling is a fast sport requiring great endurance, which makes it a fine spectator sport. So, next year, for a change of pace, go to a wrestling match. You’ll like it! Golf Is for Swingers! STANDING: Mark Krueger, Dave Ogle, Dennis Mayhew, Coach McLean. KNEELING: Tim Krause, Preston McLean, Greg Baeten. Not present: Bill Krueger, Steve Rhode. OHS golf begins its second year with the team shown above. We lost two graduating seniors, but hope to replace them with some eager and talented freshmen. All other players have returned, and for good reason--high school golf is very enjoyable. It includes free practice at Camelot, travel to other fine courses, a chance to display skill, and keen competition with friendly rivals. Our team especially appreciated the girl score-keepers who accompanied them at one shcool! Our record for 1971 is on another page. One highlight was our very first effort, an invitational tournament with seven schools, where we placed third. Another was our final event, the regional state tournament, where we beat all the schools of our size and those from our conference, losing only to large schools, such as Fond du Lac. The par 3 fourth hole at Camelot. Wide World of Sports The thrill of victory . . . The human drama This is CHS Wide World of Sports! The agony of defeat . . . . . . of athletic competition! Varsity Begins to Gain Yardage DEFEATING THE LOMIRA LIONS In spite of still being in a period of rebuilding, the Oaks varsity finished the season with a 4-4 record, winning two in conference play. Twelve seniors will graduate, but there will be eighteen juniors coming back to form a strong nucleus for 1972. Our finest hour was the defeat of the Lomira Lions 36-12 at Lomira, after our previous year's loss to them here at home 6-0. Among our strongest players were Ron Beck, Joe Wettstein, Ron Collein, and Jeff Rumbuc. Jeff was selected all-conference, and five of the team were named honorable mention. —Coach Toomey Underclassmen Build Skills SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL TEAM Jahns, J. Walgenbach, B. Schmidt, B. Retzleff, C. The girls worked on building up pep. The varsity girls had new uniforms this year to add a certain zest to their already effervescent appearance. The junior varsity worked hard, along with the varsity and the help of Miss Gunther, to activate school spirit with new cheers and different approaches at the pep rallies. Win or lose, the girls were out there leading the crowd in cheers for the Oaks. Cheering crowds are important to any team’s morale.
