They elected the following class officers: Jane Day,Presidentg Chester Kottke, Vice presidentg and Lois Leiberg, Sec. E Trees. A succesful financial and very active year was enjoyed, Hilma Ueker, Janice Shriver and Msrjorie Cowles left us during the year, After an enjoyable vacation 23 members returned, Jane Day and Chester Kottke transferred to Fond du Lac, and Mildred And- erson and Robert Thill dropped out, but Harvey Dehring , Ruby Snyder end Emily Richter joined us. Miss Sommerfield was our adviser, and the class officers were as follows: Warren Erdmann, president: Harvey Dehring, Vice president, Raymond Burleton, Sec. M Trees. Now after a second vacation we have lost more classmates, This time Bernice Stumnf trensferred to St. Karv's Springs and Gerald Doyle trensferred to Veupun, while Edward Seyfert joined us after having attended Fond du Lac biph school. ' We hereby give and beqxxeathr to the faculty , all the amazing knowledge and startling information that we have furnished them with from time to time on our various examination papers. We know that much which we have imparted to them, as well as to all the teachers and students everywhere, would throw much new light on many a hitherto familiar line of thought through' the whole world of science and learning, even outside of Oakfield High School. We leave to the dear class of '41, our back seats and clever- ness at playing nHookyn, To the class of '42, we will our recognition and superiority. To the class of '43, any overlooked balls of gum we may have left adhering to the underside of desks, assembly seats, or any unlikely places. we have sometimes had to rid ourselves of these in too much haste to be-able to pick and choose the most desir - able means of disposal. To Mr. Vandehey, we leave the balance in our class treasury, to be used in buying a pair of rubber shoes for de tective work. we feel he will need these in dealing with our successors. To Miss Nelson our ability to make hasty decisions. Kin re - rard to .Tim and Joe., Tb Mr. Heimerl, we leave memories of Ntoughn situations he had to see us through. To Mr, Kaiser and the band, we will people to fill our vac- ancies left by our geniuses, To Gordon Ryan, we leave t he examples of all the members of this class. ' We hereby nominate and appoint LaVerne Henna executor and it is our desire that she provide bonds for the trustful acting of her duty, In witness whereof we have hereunto this last day of April, sealed our last will and testament, In presence of: Roko Smiljenic Gordon Ryan Verne Jegdfeld CLASS PROIHESY Nineteen hundred and forty was an important year in America. It was the year in which a great class was graduated from the Oakfield High School. And perhaps not less important, it was the year when I came into being in the labratory of that school, a cloud extraordinarily different from most clouds that had pre- ceded me. The youngster who saw me, when I was first formed, felt about me, just as those who see me for the first time today. One of my early lovers was a far-away- boy named Lester. He had been experimenting and as he banged the cover down on thehuth water in the kettle, I was formed and sailed high into the room. WAh! A cirrus cloud,N he said. As I hovered high in the corner of the room I decided that I would take it upon myself to watch this class and seemhat type of work they would pursue in later years. This dreamy, hazy boy, watched me as I loitered there and suddenly I felt being tossed about as a sharpWLesterH sent the air waves quivers ing about meg but no answer. ' ' 'Mmat's wrong with that boy, I wonder? You Lester!W No'answer. ' Mr. Heimerl, the schoolmaster, pulled his spectacles down and looked over them about the room, then he put them up and looked out under them. He seldom or never looked through them 5 they were his state pair, the pride of his heart and were built for Wstylen not service stove lids iust as well then said, not fiercely class to hear: V Hwell, I'll be---1 As they passed out alone and snatching up direction , hurried out -he could have seen through a pair of He looked perplexed for a moment and , but not loud enough for the rest of the ,a' Class dismissed,H of the room, Lester became aware of being his'books and,an NOK Pald cast in H my of the room. Twenty five years have passed since that day and many times have I fought to keep myself together. I have floated leisurely above the blue waters of the Pacific, been blown hither and yon by the gales in Alaska, sailed over the waring nations of Europe and watched the lovers on Hiami's moonlight beach. But always there was that one thought that I must see what those men and women were doing at the end of this period of years. I had spent about a month floating above the Antarctic Ocean and h ad decided that it was time for me to return upon my mis sion.I had pulled my self together for a long flight when all at once I was caught by a terrific current of air and forced through space. My head vas whirling and it seemed as though I would be broken into bits should I ever strike a solid object, when all of a sudden I vas thrown in the opposite direction and then I came to a stop. Having regained my senses I sa! beneath me on the vast sheet of ice and snow a huge mechanical monster , a vivid baby blue and coral, and on the full wing spread in six foot letters WOakfieldU. Here I had decided to return to my birthplace and lo and be- hold it had been transplanted directly beneath me. As I held my place above this flying city I wonder what would take place. Everything seemed so serene and peaceful below as it had in those days when I had first came into being in that fair village. I saw the cabin door of the giant bird open and out stepped a tall angular man and at once I recognized the figure of Apollo as being none other than Harvey Dehring. He had piloted this mass of steel and wood to a safe landing. One of the large doors on the side of the monster opened and a huge pole at least 100 feet long,' was rolled out, Then a bale of canvas and ropes, pulleys, etc., were unloaded. My curiosity was getting the better of me as to what this all meant, Suddenly a blast from a horn, commands from a loud speaker, a whirr of motors and the huge pole was set in place, The Stars and Stripes unfurled at the very top and directly beneath a banner floating in the Anarctic breezed with WOakfield High School Expedition, Class of l94OW inscribed. I saw that the penguin's curiosity had also been aroused as they had gathered near, but I noticed someone carrying a large basket of fish began to feed them. I recognized Vera Buell. That day in the class room she had been shall of stature but now :she was a tall stately woman, endowed with a humanitarian expression upon her face. Hearing the soft purr of a giant snow sled emerging from the large door I floated closer to see who the driver might be as his parka. was hiding his face, As I gazed intently I noticed it was George Doyle and seated close beside him handling the intricate scientific mechanism was Lois Leiberg, With a spurt they were off and had I not taken heed and concealed mvself in a nook of one of the huge wings of the flying city I should have been carried along with the whirring clouds of snow that followed them, No sooner had the hum of their motors died away in the distance than I heard the faint strumming of an electric guitar with a soft resonant voice coming from within the flying monster, Noiselessly I floated in through the onen door and near to where the strains of JThe Girl I Left Behind Men came from. As I drew nearer I saw Jacob Kordoske eentlv pluckina the strings and- yes orooning adlibitum this old familiar song. As soon as this song vas ended, his clear baritone voice led on with HI Want A Girlu. At this time a clear fluorescent light attracted my attent- tion and as I followed its rays I saw that it came from a large sign reading,URide In The Flying Car.NAs the passengers boardedl watched the conductor closelyg it was a lady, and I saw M rilyn Horning had proven her belief in Woman's Rights. A voice, unquestionably familiar came to me, as it said, WTO heck with your plying Car Marilvn, I am going out with my dog team,W and at once I knew it was Warren Erdmann with 16 huskies, harnessed to a sled with Rex in the lend. No sooner had they hit the trail than a putt, putt, greeted me. With a coughing and spitting of motor and then a Gentle purr of a motor cycleg a voice called out, WHey Jerry, you can't ride thatln But a defiant answer cfme back, 'Who says I can't , didn't I learn to ride a bike when I sold band tickets over at Lamart - ins? 'Wanna ride,Irish?W This was directed to her pal Betty Lou who was lugging a heavy portable typewriter and puffing-- and-- fuming both with rage and weariness, ' ' ,' HI'd like to, hut I've got to do this typing for Admiral Heimerl,W came the wistful retort. With a whirr, Geraldine vanished into the expanse of snow Over one of the amplifiers which had been in use came a distinct voice WCalling Dr. Burleton, Surgery g Calling Dr. Burleton, Survery, Hand at once I saw it was Anna Lee Cook.Ly- ing prone upon the stretcher was the fifnre of a mxn, cove ed fron head to foot vit' a bloody red. Just then Dr. Bnrleton entered lmmo has been painting in here?W he shouted. He gave the form on the stretcher a hasty examination and then burst into laughter. ' ' Wwhat bapnened Arden?Hasked he. ' WOh it's like this, vmile I was paintinf the stanchions down where we keen the cows and goats, Old Bess kicked over the paint bucket and I got it all over me. I ain't hurt but Miss Nelson the dietitian, had me sent up here,W answered Arden Roeske. I had not forgotten the voice coming over the amplifier and I next set out in search to see who was operating the radio.Up - on entering the room the greeting 'Hello America, this is Ruth Zills speakinr from the O. H. S. Expedition in Little America?W came to me. She then gave a thorough description of the surround- ing conditions which existed. I was next interested in seeing how this vast throng was fed and where their supplies were stored. As I pushed on down through the corridor, and I metn pushed, as the aroma of steak and onions garnished with fresh grown radishes was so heavy it was hard for me to make my way. Entering the immaculate kitchen I saw Chef Vandehey preparing the menu for their stay in the Antarctic. Leaving the kitchen I floated on into the dining room. There seated upon a platform on one side of the room was an orchestra with Eddie Seyfert conducting. The crowd was gathering. As I passed a bespectacled gentleman. I heard him inform his lady companion, that the dance team of Snyder and Ogle were appearing also stated that the opera star , Verna and did want to see the bevy of dancing down the hallways I noticed he was being room marked, NPrivate, Akmiral Heimerl W on the floor show, He Iagdfeld was to appear, vafted into a girls. As I vas forcibly ushered by his companion. Now you may but he has, since menting on better and bigger clouds. Today I was informed that- he was riding one of his latest creations over Waikiki, watching the Hawaiian girls dance. As it was getting rather late and I had seen all the rest of the class, I thought it wise for me to secure a secluded spot and join then them again on the morrow. I had no sooner taken question as to the whereabouts of Lester dock that day in 1940, when I was made, been experi - refuge when I heard the hum and whirr of motors, of the dog team nearing the flying city. I knew completed their scientific research for the day would stick to the task until they had fulfilled and the Hmushw that they had and that they their mission of giving to the world the best they had.The same they had given during their school days in Oakfield High School. 3 . HISTORY When Freshmen, we started a career at the Oakfield High School as students who go out and get things for themselves, With Mr. V.ndehey as our advisor we did many things this year of which we are proud. Many of our members took part in outside activities and really surprise some of us. In basketball, 'the sport in which everyone is interested, we placed six members, who showed us some of that Hold peppesn. While in G.A.A. and Girls Glee Club we have some girls who took a very active part, Us have very few members ih the Bend, but Forensics appealled to many of the students. During the first semester we received our class rings, and they are somewhat different from those of other years. After becoming accustomed to the school, initiation was inflicted upon us, The electric shock seemed to take most of the greenness out of us. We gave two school parties which we considered quite successful, It was rumored that there never was enough food but they soon forgot about that, Four of our class are regular members of the band. We wish that Rolland and Arthur would have kept up their band work Dorothy played a trombone solo at the tournament at Oshkosh and took a second place. BAND The band, now in its third year has progressed very rap- illy. Mr. Kaiser continued as our director and Jeanne Leid- took the position of drum major . Ray Burleton was elect- ed president, Mary Cook secretary and treasurer, and Marilyn Horning librarian. Combined concerts were held at Lomira on April 9 and'at Oakfield on May 15th with the Lomira and Oakfield bands participating, Both concerts were ve'y well attended, The band narents association purchased a new flute and a pair of cymbals for the bass drum, and the School board purchased a saxbphone, A series of programs were sponsered this winter, Dy the association, to raise money for the band fund. Fine talent was displayed at each program. Although we recieved only second place in both concert and marching last year, we received tio firsts at the districts music festival at Oshkosh, May 4, this year.Among the required numbers were WThe Seeds Of Cadmusn , a number featuring every section of the band, and WMnjoretteW. Mr. Kaiser has made arrangements to have a recording made of the WSeeds Of Cadmusn by the Oakfield High School band which students may purchase. We are very proud of having the best band in the tri-county at the present time. Our hats off to Mr, Morton for having brought this band into our school, and to Mk. GIRL S'ATHLETlC'ASSOClATION Just exactly three years ago next fall the G.A.A. was or- ganized. One day Nr. Morton called a meeting of nine Junior and Senior girls interested in athletics and introduced the idea to the girls whereby they too could earn letters. It didn't take long before a constitution was drawn up and the members of the lower classes could become members, if initi- ated. We had many parties and had many nice times. This was all during the first year, but the second year we went out for Whig stuff.H We invited different schools-- and were also invited to other schools--for parties. Socially the G.A.A. was very active. Some of you still remember the time we had the sledless party. More fun! ' And now we come to the third year of it's existence. Get- ing off to a good start we initiated the new members at the first party, This year we also had many parties, We were dissappointed when we had planned to go on a sleigh ride party but there was no snow. We entertained ourselves by play - ing games and dancing in school and of course-eating. Another party no one will forget is the bowling party W! had, And don't forget the time we went to North Fondy for the playday, With twenty-seven active members and Miss Nelson as our advisor we did many things we will never forget. Next year we hope to improve the G,A,A. by making it big- ger and better, GIRLS TABLE TENNIS After the boys table tennis league had been successfully organized, Mr. Heimerl helped the girls to form a league for singles with twelve girls participating. A Betty Roeske won the championship'with Bl victories and only 2 defeats. Jeanne Leidhodt won 29 and lost 4 to come in second and Mary Cook with 23 wins and 10 losses finished in third. The league proved to be very interesting and successful We hope that it can be organived earlier next year and that more girls decide to participate. GLEE CLUB The glee club was reorganized this year under the leader- ship of Mrs. Dillon. Justine Delardin was elected president, Joyce Snyder vice-president, and Irene Wendlandt was chosen to act as librarian. Intervention of other activities retard- od it's progress, but we were able to take part in the Christ- mas Band Program. Among other favorites sung, were HAllah's Holddayn and HDeep In My Heart? We hope to be able to do more with our glee club next year, X X Y Mary Cook, Anna Lee Cook, Jean Leidholdt CHEERLEADERS To load the cheers for the boys in orange and black Oak- field High had to elect two new cheerleaders this year Jeanne Leidholdt and Mary Cook were chosen to fill the 'va- cancies left by Stell Leidholdt andd Mary Ann DeJardin. Anna Lee Cook resumed her former position, and with the two inex- perienced sophomore girls formed a trio which created fervid enthusiasm in the team and among the rooters. Peppery pep-meetings were presented before each game to display and amplify the school spirit, Hilarious skits and comedies created considerable enthusiasm which is synony- mous of the fight which is needed to make a good basketball game good. Although the basketball team wasn't always on top 'this year the volume of the cheers never diminished and we hope that in the coming year this volume can even be increased, Anna Lee has had her last year of cheering, and as she graduates this spring someone will have to take over her place next fall, Good luck and lots of pep to the cheerlead- ers in their next year of leading the athletes of oakfield onward to victory. BUYS TABLE TENNIS In February Mm, Heimerl organized a table tennis league for the boys, It was decided to play doubles instead of singles so that all would have the opportunity of playing oftener. of the thirty boys who decided to play, sixteen were placed in a major league consistina of seasoned players, and the remaining four- teen boys were placed in a minor leanue, The GuelvowaStumpf and the Flainawood teams finished in a first place tie in the minor leaque with l5 victories and 3 de- feats each. Guelvow and Stumpf won two out of three in the play-off to take the title, In the major league, Buell and Smith won the championship with l7-victories and 4 defeats, and the Erdmann-Steinke team came in second by winning l5 and losing 6. Following the league schedule an elimination tournament was conducted for both classes of players, Norman Buell, a fresh- man, copped first in the major tournament, and Hill and H,Smith finished second and third respectively.' In the minor tourna- ment another freshman boy, Arthur Schafer, won first place while Billy Guelzow and H, Dehring finished second and third respect- ively. We are looking forward to an even better table tennis sea- son next winter. The touch football season introduced Coach Vandehey who filled the vacancy left by Mr. Heimerl. The fight and spirit of the team during all of the games played whether they were won or lost shows that the new sport and the new coach were both well liked. With only a little knowledge of how to play the game called Wtouch footbellu, enthusiastic fellows reported every night after school for daily practice. They worked herd and started the season eplendidly by defeating North Fondy in e decisive battle by o 28 to O score. The team looked very promising. Although they fought bravely the inexperience of our boys was displayed in the next geme ut cempbellsport which the letter won 26 to 12. The following week, however, the gang nosed out Rosendole 7 to 6. The game with Brandon wus far from dry. In fact it wus quite wet, so wet that victory for the Oakleaves wus drowned by u 26 to O margin. Then the undefeated Kcweskum Indians to town and carriec home the bacon to the tune of 28 to 6 08.1116 Oakfield had started the touch football season with u vic- tory and ended it in the some manner. Thirty one points were chalked against Lomira, while the Hilltoppers themselves mnde failed to score. Three victories and three defeats put Ockfield exactly in the center in the final standings. WSuccessfu1H describes the Coach and the new sport perfect ly. Proof of the success of both was shown bv the fine sports- manship and clean fighting that the team exhibited, and by the unyielding enthusiasm of the students of Oakfield High who could always be heard cheering the team onward. Next fell the boys whom we are leaving behind will have the golden opportunity of getting into renl football togs, and go- ing out on the field to play some real honest to goodness tackle football. We hope that the boys backed by the student body will work hard to make this new sport a real asset to our school. 5. 1 f I ig 1 A S' A V i ' ' Q g g Ly E AQ '.. With the loss of such outstanding players as Orville Erdmann, Donald Oelke Lloyd Anderson and Clinton Censky by graduation, the new Coach-Mr. Vandehey, faced a tough situation of finding enough good men to replace these losses, With Tarren Erdmdnn, Dale Burleton and Lester Cook as a nucleus of experienced boys, Coach Vandehey set to work and developed a team which played some very interesting basket- ball and finished fourth in the conference race with six vic- tories and a like number of defeats. The highlight of the season, no doubt was the 17 t o lO victory over the Railroaders from North Fondy at Liberty Hall asketball team althou h t on Dec. 15. It was one of the best games that our team played durinc the entire season, In spite of the fact that Will and Busch were home in bed with severe colds, our team made a fine shovinm in the Campbell- sport District Tournament by dropping a heartbreaker to New Hol- stein in the last ten seconds of play by a 26-25 score in the first game. North Fond du lac defeated our team 17-ll in the second game of the tournament thereby eliminating them from fur- ther competition. Coach Vandehey gave his best to the team all season and proved that he has what it takes. With one year of experience behind him, and with such letterman as D. Burleton, Hill, Busch, Ryan and W.Cook returning, our Coach can look forward to having a fighting team which may outdo the 1959-40 quintet. N. Rrdmann, L. Cook and G.
