THE TALL TALE I have learned not to talk back to polrcemen I was comrng home after a week end vrsrt rn Calrfornra and I was comrng along about 150 m p h wrth not a care rn the world and hoprng that I would be home rn trme for supper It was whrle crossrng the Great Plarns that I heard the wall of a srren and look Ing rnto the green and yellow rear vrew muror I saw the polrceman chasrng me Not wanrrng to be dela ed I stepped on t He kept up wrt e for the frrst couple hundred mrles or so but then I began to pull away from hrm Icrossed the Mrssrssrppr lorng about 700 m p h and I was 11 Pe 1 before I knew rt As I wt nt through New York I notrced that there were more than a hundred pulled rnto Dyer Brook there was not only every cop rn the state chasrng me but I was early for drnner So whrle was wartrng untrl drnner got ready I started argurng wrth the polrcemen strckrng to the fact tnat lwas under the speed l1m1t when they frrst started chas mg me I went to court and the Jury found me gurlty of flyrng low through New York Crty and the Judge gave me frfry years rn the pen So I guess that I wrll be out of crrculatron untrl 2035 Leslre McNelly DEbC,RIBlNG A PLACE Wren my heart crres out for peace and quret and the feelrng of secureness I make my way to the Irttle church on the hrll The mrnute I step through the doorway and rnto the audltorrum I feel that I am standrng rn the best spot on earth Tht rr. are many thrngs bcsrdes the holy srlence of a church whrch makes one thrnk only of God I often stand at the front of the church wrth the pulprt behrnd and above me and look at the large prcture wrndows rn the back of the church Durrng the daytime the sun shrnes through thrs wrndow and shows us wrth the use of color and art the wonderful love that Chrrst prctured as a shepherd has for us and the baby sheep he has rn hrs arms The sunlrght comrng through thrs wrndow falls upon the carpet pews and so on rn the rrch colors rn makrng the staln glass wrndows Yes rt rs a very small church and does not have plush carpets and etc but such thrngs are not needed to make a church shrne wrth the love of IIS brrde Ardeen Goodall GOING TO SCHOOL Gorng to school lS a Job that most young people don t lrke Ithrnk the reason that they don't lrke rt IS because they have to go Some people wrll get drscouraged and qurt school but rn the later years they are sorry that they drd I Get rt In my head that I want to qurt sometrmes but my parents won t let me They say that the best part of your lrfe rs when you re gorng to school I am begrnnrng to th1nk that they are rrght because you have plenty of trme to work after you get your educatlon and have graduated My advrce to young people IS to go to school as long as they possrbly can and get as much educatron as they can Phrllrp Sherman 59 Q u Q I , . . - i , , - . but they served us well For mstance we called our refrlgerator an 1ce box for that was Just what It was and a very dark green one at that My father who has a very rngemous mrnd concocted many thrngs whrch helped us to enJoy nearly a normal ltfe 1n such a castle Thxs nce box would hold both Ice and food and served very well when rt came to keepxng food from sporlmg Thrs box bemg near the table often trmes served as a seat for my srsterand myself dunng meal trme I ll admrt that sometlmes we got down from the table much colder than when we got up The vrew from our window sometrmes changed da1ly One mornmg we would look out upon the glory of the sun nsrng over a beauttful mountain top and the next morn mg perhaps our vlew would be the splendor of the sun shrmng upon the ocean Or per haps we would even look upon the moun tam called Mosqurte although there d1d not seem to be any of such pests present than rn our fly mfested axr at home These mountams of sand were very pleasant to play fll'Sl, for although the sun was beatlng tts rays down upon underneath the sand was lovely and cool Often we were moved rn the mght wrth hardly a warmng by a tram that otherwrse would not get by At fust lt was harr ralsrng wak1ng up to fmd myself movxng mcludrng the castle I was sleeprng rn The dishes would rattle 1n the cupboard the water would sprll from the pall ln the s1nk and our beds would attempt to rock us back to sleep agam It was truly the begmnrng of the rock and roll age Of course days such as these could not go by wrthout the makrng of new fnends Most of these frrends I can stlll remember quite well but of course there are a few who have left me At Mosqurto Mountaxn our only fnends were Donna Lee Ramey and her older brother who had red ha1r and many freckles Donna had not started school at the trme we fust met her and her brother, my srster and I fage seveny tned to teach her the alphabet They had rabbrts a mother who could make soup brkes swings and many such thlngs which left a mark on my memory Once there was another outfrt on the tracks right behlnd us and the cook s daughter befnended us I can remember drstrnctly srttmg upon a plle of tres and lrstenmg to her play the harmomca There was also Dolly who was really 21 years old but acted much as a srx year old would act She collected dolls I don t belleve I w1ll ever forget her Then, of course there was Nancy Ross whom we kept ln contact wrth nght up unt1l a year ago, when she was marned We had great tlmes wlth her and made plans each year rf we should happen to stay rn her town to go see her lf th1s wasn t possrble we strll found ways to get together I can strll remember when we were very l1ttle glrls her tellmg us about her great great great great grandmother who made the f1.rst Amerlcan Flag Whether th1s was true or not I have never found out Boxcar summers have been some of the best summers of my lrfe and I wouldn t trade them for a golden castle Because of such summers I have been to and l1ved IH many know nothrng about We have a new box car now and I still enjoy gettrng out rn lt but I don't belleve the memones of these days wrll ever surpass those I have Just mentroned And whlle the boxcar IS restrng on the track through the wmter I shall lay thrs away and rest my remembrances Ardeen Goodall 58 IDON T NEED MONEY TO BE HAPPY One must have a certarn amount of money to get along on, but many tlmes I have learned ll can be made to go a lot further 1f you earn rt yourself than rf II s passed out to you Money can provrde a great deal of pleasure lf 1t's used rrght Wrth out rt you are sure of your fnends wrth sur plus money you are uncertarn The fun one can have wrthout money rt s lrmrtless The ma1n thrng IS rf I'm do1ng some thrng I lrke I'm happy I can be happy wrthout a lot ot money even though xt rs a necessrty at umes Moms Frtzgerald 59 . . Oh yes after a few trres and rt s nearly trme for hrs parents Was Junror a good boy? asks nrs mother I drdn t nave any trouble srttrng wrth hrm answers the srtter when I was srttrng' Betty York 59 PLAY PRACTICE When play practrce comes at nrght after school everybody rs runnrng around askrng rf there IS play practrce and what act they are practrcrng Mrs Mayberry calls Second act everybody to the Aggre room' Marrlyn rs on frrst so she rushes to the Aggre room she s always there on trme anyway Joyce someone frnd Joyce she s on now! We frnally frnd her upstarrs typrng away at the yearbook thrngs The play rs gorng frne and the trme comes when Carolyn and Margaret are to come on Carolyn rs talkrng to me and rn the hall a good song comes on and we dance Margaret rs always there to come on because she rs rn the Aggre room prrntrng posters Now where are the boys?
