IN MEMORIAM Colonel James S. Cook, Jr., was born on September 24, 1913, and died June 11, 1970. He epitomized the loyal, energetic and far sighted friend and supporter who has been so important to the continuity and development of Oak Ridge Military Institute. He was associated with Oak Ridge in various capacities for more than forty years. Colonel Cook was a native of Graham, North Carolina. He entered Oak Ridge as a student in 1927 and graduated in 1931. While a cadet at Oak Ridge he completed four years of R.O.T.C. training and ttended a summer encampment at Fort McClellan, Alabama. This qualified him for a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry Reserve when he reached the age of twenty-one. Colonel Cook was called to active duty with the Army in 1942 and served throughout the war with the 3rd Infantry Regiment. Upon cessation of World War II, he received an appointment in the Regular establishment of the US Army. During his distinguished military career, Colonel Cook served in a number of positions in many parts of the world. In 1946 Colonel Cook returned to Oak Ridge Military Institute as Professor of Military Science and tactics. In recent years Colonel Cook ' s service to Oak Ridge was as a member of the Board of Trustees and an officer of the Alumni Association. In these positions he was influential in all aspects of the Institute ' s activities. He played a major role in planning for and implementing the Forward March Program which aims to make Oak Ridge still bigger and better. In the memory of Colonel James S. Cook, Jr., the 1970 edition of the Dress Parade is dedicated to a loyal and untiring friend of Oak Ridge. 4
