THE Dress Parade THE YEARBOOK OF OAK RIDGE MILITARY INSTITUTE Copyright 1970, By the Oak Ridge Cadet Corp 2 CONTENTS VII. DEDICATION INTRODUCTION ADMINISTRATION FACU LTY MILITARY ORGANIZATION CORPS ORGANIZATIONS VIII. ATHLETICS IX. DORM LIFE X. GRADUATION ■ KB IN MEMORIAM Colonel James S. Cook, Jr., was born on September 24, 1913, and died June 11, 1970. He epitomized the loyal, energetic and far sighted friend and supporter who has been so important to the continuity and development of Oak Ridge Military Institute. He was associated with Oak Ridge in various capacities for more than forty years. Colonel Cook was a native of Graham, North Carolina. He entered Oak Ridge as a student in 1927 and graduated in 1931. While a cadet at Oak Ridge he completed four years of R.O.T.C. training and ttended a summer encampment at Fort McClellan, Alabama. This qualified him for a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry Reserve when he reached the age of twenty-one. Colonel Cook was called to active duty with the Army in 1942 and served throughout the war with the 3rd Infantry Regiment. Upon cessation of World War II, he received an appointment in the Regular establishment of the US Army. During his distinguished military career, Colonel Cook served in a number of positions in many parts of the world. In 1946 Colonel Cook returned to Oak Ridge Military Institute as Professor of Military Science and tactics. In recent years Colonel Cook ' s service to Oak Ridge was as a member of the Board of Trustees and an officer of the Alumni Association. In these positions he was influential in all aspects of the Institute ' s activities. He played a major role in planning for and implementing the Forward March Program which aims to make Oak Ridge still bigger and better. In the memory of Colonel James S. Cook, Jr., the 1970 edition of the Dress Parade is dedicated to a loyal and untiring friend of Oak Ridge. 4 5 it ill il I mm HE 4 1 i Villi t The Library staff assisted the cadets in finding certain materials. The administration and faculty at Oak Ridge made this an outstanding year in academics. Their primary goal was to give each student a sufficient background of knowledge for entrance into college. There were many new faculty members and also a new head- master. Their new talents, along with the capabilities of the staff members remaining from last year, proved to be a highly successful combination. The Chemistry Lab is well equipped with chemi- cals and supplies. 9 Among the modern teaching aids at Oak Ridge, is the language-lab system. It allows the student to drill in pronun- ciation and communication with the instructor as well as with tapes corresponding with the text. The mathematics department displayed great versatility in instruction. This is a cadet officer? 13 The sports program was highly successful this year at Oak Ridge. Our football team displayed out- standing spirit and teamwork winning 3 of their 8 games. The basketball team had a winning season and participated in a close season tournament in Char- lotte. This year also saw an addition of another sport at Oak Ridge. The sport was Soccer coached by Jim Millikan, Steve Sellstrom, and Bill Estes The various phases of Drill The Military program conducted this year at Oak Ridge was one of the most outstanding in the school ' s history. The efficiency of the Military Department and their knowledge of military organization was the main foundation for progress. Our Battalion Com- mander, Lt. Col. David T. Cox, put in many long, hard hours to make this a successful year. Left, Right, Left 19 1 9 Individual squad drill by the Squadleaders. 20 21 27 Disciplinary Committee - LEFT TO RIGHT - Lt. Col. Both teams played well. The most spectacular event of the day was the parade and the crowning of the queen, Miss Jane Kiger of Winston-Salem, a student at Elon College.
