The backfield is the starting backfield, but since the line only has seven positions, only seven of the eleven linemen could be placed on the line. Essentially, this is the team that piled up 373 points to the oppositions' 4l. Oak Ridge High not only went unde- feated, but also won the mythical state high school football championship with one of the highest power ratings ever obtained by a high school football team. Although it looked at the end of the season as if the Wildcats might participate in a post season bowl game, these plans did not work out. The 'Cats were mentioned as the possible visiting team in the Junior Orange Bowl. The l956 football season was a most suc- cessful one. Mike Simmons and Howell Moss, high jumpers, Mike Price, 880-yard runner, and Don Sumner, a pole vaulter, competed in last year's state meet and came back to help bolster Oak Ridge's title hopes for this season. Other top standouts to return from last year's squad were Jackie Robinson and Curtis Sanders. The l957 Oak Ridge High baseball team from left to right, First row: Graham, Simmons, Reynolds, Nichelson, Beckett, Parker, Coach Moody. Second BASEBALL HOPES HIG With a new coach at the helm, the Oak Ridge High baseballers continued to please home spectators this year as they have in past years. Coach Gene Moody had high hopes at rebuilding his team around the tour re- turning lettermen from last year's squad. His main worry was the general inexperi- ence that had to be overcome before the Wildcats could be a title contender. The strongest part of the Wildcat nine was the outfield which consisted of Jackie Pope, Gene Berkau, and Jimbo Heiskell. This trio possessed speed, good throwing arms, and above average hitting ability. Gene Berlaau was the captain, and Gene Davis was the alternate captain. H row: Tidwell, Purnell, Berkau, Coats, Ward, Jackson, Owens, Pope. Third row: Gregg, Burger, Meadows, Jago, Heiskell, Davis, Mass, Lord, Manager.
