'The band added immensely to the aura of the games. The band has participated in clinics throughout the state as well as in our own assembly programs. Their crowning achieve- ment for the year was the Winter Concert in February. This year's band continued the high tradition of the bands of many years past in being rated superior at the annual East Tennessee High School Band Festival at Maryville College. 78 W 15:4 l. THE CHORAL ENSEMBLE ENTERTAINS Always one of the outstanding activities at Oak Ridge High, the Choral Ensemble is one in which all students par- ticipate, actively or passively. Those who sing with the en- semble reap benefits in developing their musical talents and in learning the techniques of theory and harmony and sylla- bication. Those who listen can relax and learn to discern good music. The Ensemble journeyed to the University of Tennessee campus in October to participate in the East Ten- nessee Ensemble Festival and were chosen to be solo group at the evening performance before the East Tennessee Edu- cation Association Convention. The team that was to attain a no. three ranking in the state, compiled the Wildcat's second straight 9-l record for the season. Probably the most outstanding single achieve- ment came in Tailback Dump Chapmen's passing. He set a new record for touchdown passes in a game. After finishing in fifth place in the state track meet last year, the Wildcat cinder- men will be out to regain the state title they won consecutively in the two previous years. Oak Ridge nudged Knoxville Fulton in the district track meet in Knoxville and were in turn shaded by Fulton in the re- gional in '54. Sam Hanson, who was last year's track captain, set a new Oak Ridge High School record in the l2O yard low hurdles. This was a remarkable achieve- ment because Hanson didn't run the hurdles until the district meet. The team will be bolstered by the re- turn of Captain John David Spears who runs the 440 yard dash. Other veterans re- turning arei Don Sadler, Mike Simmons, Wayne Parsons, Tommy Wheeler, Richard Hoskins, David Carroll, and Barry Brack- ney. Edward Del Grande, who is putting in his first year at Oak Ridge High School, will be the new baseball coach, succeeding last year's coach Bill Woodfin. Coach Del Grande will depend heavily on Co-Captains Joe Mason and Jerry nolds, Bobby Freestone, Mike Baker, Jerry Babb, David Solomon, Kurt Delcour, Tommy Coats, Randy Nickelson, John Cary, Carl Crockett, Coach Ed Del Grande. Stapleton. Mason last year played behind Gene Cowan at third base, but he will probably play shortstop this year. Staple- ton is a fastballing pitcher who also plays end on the football team. Captain for this year's team will be Jody Dunlop, who plays number two and is in his third year on the team. Co-Cap- tain will be Don Catron, in his first season of varsity play. Other returnees are: John Coach Green shows Captain Jody Dunlop and Co- Captoin Don Catron a thing or two. TENNIS Murphy, Eddie Hodges, Wayne Sprouse, and David Dunlop. Last year ORHS racketmen racked up eight opponents while losing to only two. The two teams, Nashville MBA and CMA, had new courts made of an unfamiliar ma- terial called Rubico which the players were not used to.
