The A.F.S. insfifufed graduafe fellowships for French uni- versifies befween fhe wars, and affer serving again in World War Il wifh fhe Allied Armies, and fherefore wifh men of many nafionalifies and beliefs, if revived fhe idea of a peace-fime program fo furfher fhe basic friendship which exisfs among all men, ln l947 A.F.S. began ifs new worlc on fhe feenage lovel, as being mosi lilcely fo accomplish fhe obiecfive. The American Field Service is a privafe educafional organiza- fion, wifh no religious or polifical affiliafions. Soufh-African smile. lvlafild lvlenase, fhe American Field Service sfudenf from lsfanbul, Turkey, is a charming and versafile girl. Besides being an Honor Roll sfudenf and a member of fhe Cum Laude l-lonor Sociefy, she is also a good dancer and swimmer. lvlaffie's name appeared on fhe program of fhe Sym- phony Orchesfra Dance Concerf when she porfrayed a cowboy in Copland's Billy fhe Kidf' She also parficipafed in fhe Synchronized Swim Show. lvlaffie enioyed her year in Oak Parlc wifh her American family, fhe Greenbaums, and all of her American friends, who will remember her always as fhe girl wifh fhe smile. i
