O Jong ag Ji 'IXUW COLOR GUARD RICHARD RANDALL JOHN WATSON CHARLES WILLIN6 GEORGE SCHOENFELD JOHN BARROW O say, can you see, hy the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose hroad stripes and hright stars, through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming! And the rockets' red glare, the homhs hurstin g in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say, does that star-spangled hanner yet wave O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave? On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Whe1'e the foe's haughty host in dread silence 1-eposes, What is that which the hreeze, o'er the towering steep, As it jitfull y hlows, now conceals, now discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's jirst heam, In full glory reflected now shines on the stream, 'Tis the star-spangled hannerg O long may it wave O'er the land of the free, and the home of the hrave. Oh, thus he it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land, Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just, And this he our motto- In God is our trust. And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free, and the home of the hrave. FOREWORD Picture a war zone. Sbips bombard a strongbold. Bombs burst, rockets explode and a baze of smoke bangs low. A prisoner walks tbe deck in anguisb. All day and nigbt tbe battle bas been going on, and now, as it becomes ligbt, a beavy mist bides tbe ramparts. It seems impossible tbat tbe fortress can sur- vive tbe attack, for its guns are small and its defenders few. But suddenly at seven o'clock a rift in tbe mist sbows a flag still gallantl y streaming. No, it is not 1944, but 1814. It was during tbis nigbt one bundred and tbirty years ago that our national antbem was created. Amid tbe rockets' red glare and tbe bombs bursting in air Francis Scott Key, tbe prisoner on tbe Britisb vessel, composed Tbe Star-Spangled Banner . Again as in 1814 our country is engaged in a perilous figbtu to keep tbe Stars and Stripes still waving over tbe bomes of a free and a brave people. A struggle against tyranny is necessary once more to safeguard our rigbts. Tbe trutbs wbicb tbe song sets fortb will live as long as tbere are free men to sing it. Boys wbo bave learned tbis song in our scbool are now out on a battlefield figbting for tbe ideals for wbicb our flag stands. We memorize tbis song,' we study tbis incident and otbers in our national bistoryg and we discuss tbe meaning of tbe ideals on wbicb our government was founded in order to under- stand clearly wby we are figbting and wbat kind of peace we want. And so we know more tban tbe refraing we are conscious of otber mean- in gful pbrases. We bave borrowed sucb pbrases for our book and we emphasize tbem as part of our American berita ge. I9I
