AM . , 4AM'a4.z Jiii elif 34 JGIWIOT' offlcerf Horizon The sky is gray, and youth looks out to sea For ships of chance to take him from the shore His daring hopes for days that are to be Outshine regrets for those that are no more. He Waits. No ship appears, but faith that one Will come, has kept him hoping through the night He trusts that at the rising of the sun A guiding Hand will lead his steps aright. But should no ship arrive, no light appear, He knows that he will yet achieve his aim, His is the strength without the doubt and fear Of those who seek mere glory and a name. He hears the ocean surging through his soul, And dreams he hears it crash on far-off sands, He peers into the mist, and sees his goal Still glimmer faintly from yet unknown lands. When youth looks out to sea, how near he seems To that far, bright horizon of his dreams! EMILY ANN HARVEY Class Poet 32 P-.:..' All of you boys and girls, too, have been choosing and playing your parts. Some of you have played down stage in the glare of the footlights and others have played equally Well up stage. As the curtain is being closed on this first happy act of the drama, you can look forward with conidence. You have had the best of coaches. You have learned that the costume, although a valuable aid, will not play the part. You have learned to think, to like to use your mind, to think beyond the Ivory Door. You are now ready for the next act. It is your cue. The stage may be set with confusion and uncertainty, the properties may be misplaced, there may not be enough parts to go around, but this is only an opportunity, only a challenge to the class of 1934 To act Well your part. W x , ,,,, , Honor Bright On November 17, 1933, the annual Girls' Club Show Was presented in the auditorium. This year the play, Honor Bright, proved to be particularly Well-suited to the abilities of those chosen to portray the leading roles. The theme for the plot of this comedy is furnished by the adventures of Honor Bright, a young book agent, who consents to pose as the Hancee of Richard Barrington, a young man who finds himself in difficulties with his family when his fiancee fails to appear at the crucial moment. When the young lady in question does arrive, complications set in, but the puzzle is successfully unravelled through the efforts of Honor Bright. THE CAST Watts, the butler .... ....,......... This play was especially appropriate because it was addressed to Youth. It challenged its audiences to do their own thinking rather than to remain slaves bound by tradition. Bob Van Wagoner made a handsome, regal Perivale. Underneath his kingly bearing, he portrayed the wistfulness of Youth and a yearning for knowledge. t'Every inch a queen applies to the marvelous performance of Juliette Foley as Lilia. Robert McClintock's interpretation of the role of the chancellor showed great histrionic ability. Harry Sturla very convincingly portrayed the char- acter of Brand, the body-servant of Perivale. Both Margaret Fox and Frances janicek managed to give a realistic note to the part of Old Anna, the nurse. Bob Anderson was very well-cast in the role of Bruno, the overbearing captain of the guards. Marion Delaplaine and Helen Porter gave very charming rendi- tions of Thora, the lady-in-waiting to the queen. The rest of the cast all main- tained the high standard of acting evident throughout the play. The Class of 1934 is proud to be the first class to present their Senior Play in three performances. This unusual distinction was an added tribute to Miss Payne's talent for directing and staging dramatic successes. -11 1l 1 1 112 King Hilary .,., The Child Perivale Attendant ,,,,., Periyale A A A Brand ..,. At three-thirty, the sophomores gathered in the auditorium where an eX- tremely funny pantomime, The Lighthouse Tragedyf' was presented. Dorothy Lomax danced, after which a group of chorus students sang. This completed the assembly entertainment, and the party-goers hastened to the Held house to dance to the music of Bob Peloquin's orchestra. After several dances the floor show took place. Lucille Peterson and Ruth Anna Hruby danced, and Wfilliam Haley and Jack Bulkeley entertained with tap dances. A quartette sang pop- ular songs. Refreshments of wafers and ice cream were served. Dancing was then continued by everyone. Much credit is due to the chairmen of various committees who gave their time to help plan this successful party. This organization is of such importance that a standing committee is picked so that all members of the crew will be reliable workers wtih experience behind them. The stage crew is in charge of setting the scenery that is indispensable to all school productions. Much time is spent in practicing shifting scenery so that the sets can be speedily arranged during the intermissions. The lights crew arranges the lights so as to bring out the high points of the scenery and tone down the harsh spots. Their duties include removing the paint from old bulbs and painting them over again. Much care is necessary to focus the lights on the right spots without over-emphasis.
