No child could be born unless she was jiresenl, no rnoiher eoulclhnfl relief from pain wiihoui her. The iorch and ouisireichecl hand of encouragenzeni, are symbolic oflliihyia. The ,symbolism is paralleled in the hebb and care, given in ihe lighi ofhnowleclge,by ihe nurse. OAK PARK HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF NURSING 500 SOUTH MAPLE AVENUE, OAK PARK, ILLINOIS St. Vincent realized, like every Catholic saint, that the great fundamental truth of the Christian religion is the Fatherhood of God, Who because He is Father, loves His divine Son, and in Him, all men. St. Vincent showed by words and example that men are bound to love one another with the same love with which God loves them, and if men will not love their brethren in jesus Christ neither do they love God. This was the truth that guided and inspired his life and that earned for him the glorious title of Patron Saint of all works of charity in the Catholic Church, which was conferred upon him by Pope Pius X. At the back of all modern philanthropy - work for children, the sick, prisoners - stands St. Vincent de Paul. 2 I 'lW!111! FJ H4 f utr If 'M 1. 1 . vw .x ' 'g' -'-11H -- . Oh, What happiness foryou to be work- ing to the same erza' as He did He came to preach the Gospel ana' that zlsyour lot and occupation. U' our perfection ties in charujl, which it does, there zs no greater charity than to give one's whole sehf to save souls and to sacrwce oneseh' as jesus Christ didfor others. Reverend john A. Dufficy, Chaplain of Oak Park Hospital, is a familiar figure as he cares for the spiritual needs of patients and all who seek his counsel. Sister St. Thercsa's most predoininated quality is her devotion to nursing. When she decided to give her life to God, she realized she wanted to give it in a special way - by helping people. Although Sister wanted to do actual bedside nursing, her service was needed in administration. Her desire to help people is being fulfilled for she sees and directs the care given to the sick. anne M M is-me m ss Biff? megs www -2-'EHR asus lx B WE Q53 is mi I sg mem - EE E , Es? ..... -in S ew e H E ' M l Qggxw wiiges .asf :g:.. On that date, Sister Saint Giselle, Director of the School, re- ceived a letter from the Board of Review of the Department of Diploma and Associate Degree Programs of the National League for Nursing advising her that our school had been granted full accreditation by that accrediting body. This accreditation means that our school and its educational program meet the criteria required by the National League for Nursing, and that it compares favorably with other fully accredited schools in the nation. Much of the credit for this achievement is accorded to the faculty, and particularly to Mrs. Josephine Nordahl, Educational Director. Accord is also given to the full cooperation of the hospital administration, nursing service, and the students. However, since education is a continuing process, accreditation is not an end in itself but rather a rung on the ladder. It will serve as an incentive to enhance and improve our pro- gram so that it may be rated the best. ri ll, ' 0 l ', ,fu l .A 'W I3 GRADUATE What hajapinessfor ihese good girls' going ou! io carry on the charigz lhai our Loral practiced on earih wherever ihey go. Spurred on to greater efforts by the growth of the School of Nursing and the need for a larger scholarship fund to assist students, social activities were planned for almost every month during the Alumnae year. During this current year we have awarded 3 scholarships, and responded to one financial assistant request in january 1963. Awards were presented to a Senior, junior, and Freshman student in May 1962, September 1962 and May 1963. September was membership drive month and purposed plans for the year were presented to the membership. October was the month of the annual cocktail party, a gala affair with a autumn theme. November meeting was novel in that the membership was given an opportunity to tour a new hospital in the area, Gottlieb Memorial in Melrose Park. The director of nursing service was hostess to our group. Schrieber of St. Bernadine's parish gave conferences, heard confessions and said Mass during the day long program. May 15th was the. date of the annual banquet honoring, this year, the 1963 graduates and the 50th anniversary graduates from the class of 1913. The class of 1952 under the chairmanship of Mrs. Veronica Moran Bowling planned and directed this affair which was held at the River Forest Golf Club. Grateful we are to our officers: President Joann Rogers Long '57g Vice PresidentjeanneFreemon Gar- rity '54g Treasurer Ramona Klinefelter Wilson '42g Recording Secretary Mary Vestgard Long '57g Cor- responding Secretary Virginia Shcahen Houlihan '48. December's letter to the membership was in the form of an invitation to our Christmas party at Otto's in Forest Park, probably the most successful Christ- mas party we have had in many years. january began our planning for our February dance and the annual Spring banquet. February was the month of our Valentine Ball at the VFW Hall in Forest Park. Red and white was the decor and happy was the time for all. March is a quiet month awaiting the Spring activities. April 3rd was the date of the Day of Recollection. Father Edmund 44 Lew lu rzglll fSflUl!lfIlgj.' Mrs. Ramona Wilson - Treasurer, Mrs. Virginia Houlihan - Cor- responding Secretary. We think too, that ILITHYIAS is the appropriate place to express our appreciation to those organizations and individuals through whose scholarship funds many of our stu- dents have beea able tocomplete their education. And to the doctors who have parti- cipated in the health service and assistedwiththe educational program, we acknowledge our indebtedness. Recognition is also due to Walinger Studios tor the excellent pictorial portrayals and to Mr. Mann, ofthe King Company, tor his invaluable aid and counseling. The quotations in this edition are taken from the writings of St. Vincent de Paul and clearly and beautifully express that which we feel so sincerely. 78 Y. ..... -..----'i..- I 1 1 vo rrr rt'fv-1'ri1-ri vw-yur w l 5. x A 1
