In the foyer of Misericordia Hall is a striking example of the crest of the Sisters of Misericorde. Done in Italian mosaic, the beautiful escutcheon is a focal point of interest. Embraced by branches of oak lies a shield ot blue and silver. Below three rosettes surmounted by a gold cross on an eminence of gold, the shield is divided . . . on the right halftheletterMsurmounted by a golden crown appears on an azure field, on the left is a broken reed on a field of silver. The motto, DERELICTS MISERICORDIA, and the name of the order, SOEURS DE MISERICORDE, appear on the base. The gold ofthe shield signifies charity. The three rosettes express love united with charity in the work of mercy. Azure denotes the nobility of sentiment guiding the work. The M crowned with gold bespeaks the protection of Mary, and is the initial letter of the houses of Misericorde. The broken reed signifies the penitents who come to recover their innocence in a home of chastity, symbolized by the silver. Courage and strength of soul are symbolized by the oak branches. DEREUCTIS MISERICORDIA is literally translated as --tender pity for blighted souls.
