Upon their shoulders rests die great task of stimulating the students with the desire to learn, and offering them the trained leadership which must guide them througiiout their high school edu- cation. They are trusted by the community to develop this ceaseless process, and to prepare each student lor continuing this life-long project. Left to right: Dr. James N. Pepper, Supertntendait of Schools, Mr. Clifford May, Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Edmn Crandall, Curriculum Coordinator, Dr. Lawrence ' alade. Assistant Superintendent in charge of Administration. Administration Oak Park ' s Board of Education, composed of lay citizens, sets the policy throughout the school system. Another of its more important functions is providing adequate funds for maintaining school operations. The school board is the citi- zens ' link to the education of their children, and all meetings are open to the public. The Superintendent of Schools carries out the policies es- tablished by the board and oversees the general activities of the school district. To help him with die great amount of work which the job entails, die superintendent has three administra- tive assistants; a business manager, a curriculum co-ordinator and an assistant supervisor. Left to right- back: Dr. James N. Pepper, Dr. Arthur Parkllan, Dr. Lawrence Valade, Mr. Gordon Pitcher, Mr. Gerson Lacoff. Frorik Mrs. Marjorie Sand- ler, Mr. Leland Smith, Dr. Herbert Warren, Dr. Morris Weiss, Mrs. Sdma Shargd. Here in Oak Park, the Board of Education, the Ad- ministration and the Facnhy have phmned a school program that serves both the individual needs of every boy and every girl and the complex needs of the country. Throughout the land there is increased awareness of an urgent need to provide youth with an education that liberates the mind from ignorance and provides them with wholesome American phil- osophy of life and with the common knowledges and. skills every person should have, no matter what his vocation mav be. In our schools, the student is no mere receptacle wherein information can be stored. At every level he is expected to be an active learner, growing in his ability to think clearly and independ- endy and to act honesdy and sincerely. These are es- sential to educate for freedom and contribute to per- sonal satisfaction and social usefulness. C tU vuM. u -jV-o Dr. Arthur Matthews was principal at Royal Oak Kimball High before becoming principal at Oak Park last year. He attended Harvard University, Tufts University, and Wayne State University. He holds the A.B., M.Ed., and E.D.D. degrees. Working As Unit DR. ARTHUR MATTHEWS The principal and assistant principal are responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the school. They make the rules for the school in accordance with school board rec- ommendations, and theirs is the final decision on all school projects and functions. The many contacts that we have with these people are actually only a small part of the total activ- ity that goes on in the main office. Congratulations Seniors. It has been a vers ' plea- sant experience working with such a cooperative and energetic group as the Class of 1962. I am certain your past actions and achievement will serve as a mod- el In providing a continuous flow of successful ex- periences in the future. iL-n y 3 - VtrT-t X t,. ' t Mr. John Kouzoujian, assistant principal, taught classical literature at Oak Park before assuming his present post last vear. Counselors Our Guides THe many duties of the Oak Park counselors include parent conferences, four year programs, aptitude tests, college and vocational guidance. The counselor also meets with each student at least once a year for scheduling. Through these contacts with the student and by making use of the materials available to him, the counselor is in an excellent position to advise on matters concerning grades, college and career. Also, the counselor is always ready to discuss any personal problems with the smdent. In addition to specialized counseling training, each counselor has had class- room experien ce, and therefore can make competent decisions and offer con- structive criticism and suggestions. The counselor ' s office is not means to be a setting for a melodramatic crying session, rather, the one place where he parents, smdent and counselor can meet for a serious discussion of present activities and future plans. A N PrfpSrqtion For Math The Language Mathematics, the exact science, is becom- ing more and more important as science and knowledge progress. Knowledge of math, often called the language of science, must be developed for understanding new and fascinating discoveries. In keeping with the times. Oak Park ' s math department has turned to a modern teaching method developed at the Univer- sity of Illinois, by Dr. Max Beberman and Dr. Herbert Vaughn. This method, which stresses the student ' s own thinking, is also being introduced at Oak Park ' s junior high schools, in a program designed at the Uni- versity of Maryland. JAMES S. All experts in their par- ticular fields, the teachers combine friendliness and cooperation with serious instruction to form a good atmosphere for study. In addition to teaching the scientific method of observation and experimentation, they have the difficult job of conveying intricate and complex principles to the students. They dem- onstrate important basic ideas with advanced technical devices, and in labora- tory work the students actually see what they are studying. CARL JOHN KAMPMUELLER Eastern Micli. In Oak Park ' s lang- uage classes, while learning to read and write a language, the students become acquainted with that country ' s customs and traditions, be it ancient Rome or modern France. The language teacher has the unique problem of intro- ducing a subject to the students, who are, in most cases, completely unfamiliar. The teacher must use many different kinds of teaching methods to present the subject matter effec- tively. As an aid to the teachers, the high school has a mod- ern language laboratory, equipped with individual booths, recording devices, earphones, and microphones. This allows the instructor to work individually with each student. LUCILE CORTRIGHT New York U. B.A. GEORGE GIANNETTI Wavne State U. M.A. ROBERT EUGENE TITUS Wayne State U. Physical Education The physical educaUon training program, as most Oak Park students certainly realize, is more than a play hour. The physical education teachers try to develop and train their pupils toward physical fitness and manual dexterity. In addition, the students learn sportsmanship and cooperation, which are of immense importance in order to take a respon- sible position in the adult world. Industrial Arts In the industrial arts program, students are given an op- portunity to develop skills and interests in vocations and hobbies, and are taught to use modern machines in a safe and serious atmosphere. It is an organized group of people who represent the majority of school spirit and scholarly ideas. They are the ones who must take over the reigns of leader- ship at the exit of each senior class. In the eyes of many seniors, an underclassman is considered almost a nonentity, however, his position should be recognized for the importance which he plays in high school affairs. 22 Freshmen Lay A Strong Foundation The freshman class this year is the largest group ever entering Oak Park High School. They represent over one third of the total school population. For their first function they presented a dance, which was held on November 17, 1961, entided the Harvest Hop : It was enjoyed by all who attended and was a success both socially and financially. Though the freshman class is just beginning high school life, thej ' have excelled in school spirit, which is the most important factor in maintaining a success- ful class, and have laid a solid foundation for their coming high school years. The sophomores have been active in most school activities and their presence was always noticed in the student council and other school clubs. Some sophomores played their part in most athletic teams, with some gaining post-season honors. Their toboggan party in January was thoroughly enjoyed by all and their February dance was also a huge success. While only in their second year of high school, the class of ' 64 has laid an excellent foundation for their junior and senior years and should continue to be a strong nucleus of our school. The Prom was a successful and memorable event which few juniors will ever forget, and all those participating felt that it had been well worth the hours spent in planning. In addition to the Junior Prom, the class prepared and sponsored numerou s activities which would bring, along with a good time, a growth of school spirit. The spirit of Halloween was exhibited at the Witches Wobble , and a Toboggan Party offered hours of fun for all toboggan enthusiasts. Also included in their activities was the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance . As a result of the student co-operation displayed throughout the year, it is evident that the Class of ' 63 will go on to enjoy a fruitful and rewarding senior year. On November 9 and 10, the Oak Park High Drama Ckib members pre- sented A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur ' s Court in the auditorium. Playing the lead as Hank Bennet was George Layne who, only last year was Nat Miller in Ah Wilderness. Hank Bennet was a young man who was mysteriously capable of turning back to 508 A.D. The play started off in a New Eng- land home and was suddenly taken back to the time of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table. As the play progressed, Hank Ben- net stupefied King Arthur and his court with 20th century magic. The success of the play should be attributed to the Drama Club ' s spon- sor and director, Mr. Robert Wurdock, and, of course, to the large number of students participating. It does this through field trips to firms or campuses and guest speakers who have some background in the field of engineering.
