N l Throughout the past thirteen years, Oak Park has evolved from a modern shin -new school building to a melfow tradition in the Northland area. The physical growth of the building is far reaching. From the original installation of the big OP, to the sign on 79th Terrace, to the new broadcasting equipment, Oak Park has adapted to constantly changing needs of the students, faculty and administration. Yet, the physical changes are only visible reminders of more intricate, pervasive changes in the philosophy and attitudes governing Oak Park. From the beginning, Oak Park has been referred to as a liberal, modern institution. The curriculum, student-teacher relationships, and administrative policies frequently serve to substantiate this. Regen era ting Yet, Dr. Dan Kahler, the school board, teachers and students have all worked to strike a balance between various facets of policy- makin . Obviously, the adapta- tions qiave not perfected the s stem. Flaws still persist, but the fllexibility illustrated shows that Oak Park is not stagnant - it is a growing, changingl institution. Throughout t e years, CAM- BIA has attempted to record this rowth. By definition, cambium, from which CAMBIA is derived, denotes the rings formed around a tree recording the tree's annual growth. The history of the seasons is captured in the ringls of the tree. Like the cambium, t e GAMBIA is a history of growth. As you turn the page, a history of the 1977-78 school year at Oak Park will unfold. 5 L w ' , ,, , Y ,M -f- ------ - - V -- +V ,A M-.A , Y -...... - f ' ' 94- '-,,:.1g,-ggg-' ,,.L::r, :f--Lai: ,. No wi: W building can withstand thirteen years of rough, persistent use without showing some sign of wear. As a result, Oak Park no longer projects its original freshly painted, polished image. Yet the architects' original accomodations to modular scheduling and a widely varying curriculum are still evident. En Vironm ent The lack of doors on many rooms, the use of lights instead of bells to separate time blocks, and specialized equipment scattered throughout the school are conducive to the varied approaches of teaching and learning at Oak Park. faqs , U, ff lf7,y,1 if , - M .-vt . ...L--.,. Oak Park students do not restrict their activities to the inside of a school building. In 1977-78, student council organized activities encouraging students to direct energy into the community. Continuted support of the United Fund was initiated by Stuco representatives collecting donations in attendance classes. Class competition and compe- Extending tition between the sexes, spurred on even more participation. Contributions, community invol- vement and student-held positions on local government boards illustrated that in 1978, more than ever, Oak Park was a definite asset to the community. fm-ff ,ggqg 7'5- fyilfgk :f'.'fif,.'.A'4' , f ff 6 Q, Q23 at , , y , ,, fwf' , f f, 4. .ix as Q 5' w W 7 -s... Evidence of creative talents being developed are illustrated in every facet of Gak Park. Whether a student is carefully carving an intricate sculpture, composing a term paper or devising a precise scientific Crea ting experiment has little bearing on whether or not each is creating. The end result of a concrete, tangible item is not a determing factor. There is more creation taking place here than is initially visible. In every department, students develop the ability to think in new and varied terms. A great deal of emphasis is placed on innovating and improving past creations, not just in repeating them. Classroom activities include a varied course of discussion, studying, testing. New modes of teaching involve adaptation and innovation on traditional concepts. Modular schedul- ing, independent study, and the option of pass-fail grades in many classes allow students and teachers to utilize resources to their best advantage. Increased participa- Curriculum tion in these specialized programs creates new incentives to work within Oak Park's educational system. 2001, Selling, Consumer Awareness, American Military History specialize and expand on conventional themes in educa- tion. From traditional to unusual, Oak Park's curriculum in 1977-78 offered a variety of classes. From these, students chose the courses suited to their educational goals. 7 rr ' V Q ff f ,. ,. , , ,,, QJI, N t I li. I , , r... ..,. ..f, - ,,-Qtr R x . Adminjstra tors share their ideas we Faced with conflicting ideas surround- ing innumerable policies and regulations, Oak Park's administrators daily attempted to balance conflicts at Oak Park. Keeping up with students and faculty is obviously a very demanding responsiblity. Dr. Dan Kahler established several goals for the 1977-78 school year. He made it a point to spend at least one mod per day in the student lounge, to visit each resource center weekly, and to personally evaluate each of the 84 teachers at Oak Park. Dr. Kahler along with Mr. Larry Cornine, Admjnjstra tors t encouraged the use of new district-wide competency guides in math and science. Mr. Dick Powers assumed responsibility for the Booster Club. Miss Vickie Baker kept an eagle-eye on attendance. Devising new ways to keep modular scheduling running smoothly, was Mr. Bob West. In short, Oak Park's administrators reacted to new problems and situations with action designed to resolve the conflicts. One of the most beneficial classes was Secretarial Practice, which was taught by Miss Shirley Cromer. One and a half credits of typing was one of the prerequisites for this class. All 21 girls enrolled were honor students and soon quite capable of handling any secretarial job. Preparing Approximately 270 sophomores took Basic Business, which is essentially an introduction to the other business classes. Students learned about the economy, insurance, and money management. The business department offered twenty different classes, more than any other department at Oak Park. All of the classeskprovided students with a substantial background in essential business skills. But, high school is actually one three-year exam, testing students mainly on their intellectual skills in class, their social life among peers, and their talents in extra- curricular activities. The typical tests at Gak Park were written ones given in nearly every class at the end of a chapter or maybe at the end of every week. Each of these exams required tedious hours of study. Iuniors discovered, however, that they could not prepare for all tests. Testing For example, tests such as the PSAT, TASK, and the SCAT, could not be studied for, and took several hours to complete. Iuniors were not alone in their struggle with standardized tests. Approximately 150 seniors were challenged with the ACT test and another 20 took the SAT. Both exams are used for college placement. Generally, Oak Park students seemed to do well on tests in 1977-78. Over 110 Oakies were on the 4.0 honor roll, while nearly 600 achieved the 3.0 honor roll. -rf J -fo '-fl! .1 ra X ,,,,'- an 4-.fi llfq is S sg, SZ! fqx N r-,N Zu?-f ?-PCN j 32.5-59 K -52 ff K 30 Pr S , Au 1 50 J Y 'J 1 ,ag gr? ,.N.-- 1--.,',' ,,.- ig., ,f,-,,:.-,,-,- x - , -. - . k,-.X,-f.--.-..- --. .. ,V '1 M:-V.-.--1,4--af..-V , , ,.,- -x,,--A., X - - X '- f--' - M11--V Q:--L.: Y. -ff:-4,1-gprf.-. :1-., f:i3'f?u .5 'S'-rf--T: 1 x n .X. f. , n X - x V f -. 1. ...ru vu- ..,-wg.,.,?e'1--.V-Maw-.4fAwvn..Q-f., - -1r.-41f--.-..M.f.,-:-1.:-:1.:fq.11-n'y:- -sq-g-:1::.,3 4 .Ye-193, 4, J.-gn,-Jazz.-. . , X 5 5,-152,--3,.4 -fp.-- ,.,..,...,.,...-...,.... ugh! Clubs and activities provide a new arena for growth and the development of individual talents. During the 1977-78 school year, organized clubs saw several changes. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Richard Rice, Oak Park benefitted from the Activities Radio Broadcasting Clubfor the first time. A new sophomore pop singing group, the Northland Express, was initiated. The Letterman's Club was revived amidst controversy. In short, the emphasis placed on various facets of Oak Park activities is indicative of changing attitudes and interests. ,Qs---...,-h I Y' www A V I, .1 91- ,qqwfk X ..,,5,4??Lk 5 7 l 3 l 4, -.. Future Teachers of America is a state organization sponsored by Miss Lois Fann and Mrs. Cora Wright. FTA gives a chance for the student to experience the teaching profession. The class meets three mods one day a week and then the students cadet teach one and one half hours each week. Cooperative Occupational Education, better known as COE, is taught by Mr. Ron Atkins, Mr. Ioe Grace, Mr. David Hensel, and Mr. Carl West. The COE students have an opportunity to get on-the-job training during Working school and earn money while they learn. The Cold Buffet was the place for the annual COE banquet. Off Campus Instruction ICCII, under the uidance of Mr. Larry Cornine, is also a way for the student to expand his educational background in the job field. For any student to receive credit he must submit a Two-Week Report Sheet, pass all classes, and attend a three week mini-course each semester. 1 nl... 00 0 ti l 1 With Mrs. Karon Wheat sponsoring Home-EC Club, President Mickey Martin an other club members developed their home economic skills to perfection. Over 360 students a day walked into this room and practiced various songs. Getting students involved and maintaining control were the two main responsibilities of Vocal Music Director, Mr. Bill Grace. This year the music departments were blessed with assistant, Miss Debbie Iustus. . Almost all classes in vocal music have one requirement, auditioning. Those classes are Sophomore Choir, Girls' Choir, A Cappella, and the two pop groups, Northern Lights and Oak Street Singers. The class that is non-audition is Mixed Chorus. An extra pop group, The Northland Express was started this year, with students selected from Performing Sophomore Choir. This year, Gak Park's choirs were joined with choirs from Winnetonka and North Kansas City to form the annual music festival. Dr. Eph Ehly from UMKC was the clinician. Seasonal concerts, along with the annual performance of The Messiah were also performed during the year. I . Jil Q I 'ai l il P f, , ,. V, 'Lf' M 1 . As school started, these groups practiced during the scheduled band mods. e Marching The bannerettes thrilled their audiences with routines involving the use of handflags and flares. In an attempt to become recognized as a drill team independent of the Marching Band, the group performed for indoor events accompanied by Pep Band. Sheri Netherton and lean Smyers were the Oak Park Majorettes. Performing jointly at football ames with Marching Band and at basketbafl games with Pep Band kept the girls active. The group partici ated in the American Royal Parade, the Wiliam Iewell Homecom- ing, and also competed in the Antioch Parade and the St. Ioseph marching contest winning second place awards in both. ,i orthm en Top left, The 1977-78 Bannerctle Squad isi hack row. During the football season, every year, a Winnetonka Wiener roast is given to promote spirit. Pep Club also sponsored Homecoming, St. Pat's, and Winter Sports festivities. The Pep Club girls were continually painting spirit posters and giving fruit and flowers to athletes. A picnic was also given later in the year to Oakie tracksters and the tennis team. Supporting Pep Club continued to sell fruit and cheese, which was a great success. The Pep Club Banquet was held at Arrowhead Inn in 1978 where various positions were handed down to next years officers. Most of all, Pep Club kept spirit moving throughout the student body. Sponsors Miss Annette Luyben and Miss Linda Alverson helped Pep Club organize their many activities. The enormous Rahs heard from the stands and the fi ht song, as the athletes received good luck charms, will forever be remembered by the 77-78 Oakies. pw, 4 f 1 v 'ff up .7 W 'iguy . 46 if . The club raised money through magazine and Dispatch newspaper sales to help pay for a float trip taken in May. The girls sold more Dispatch subscriptions per member than any other club at Gak Park and were rewarded with their picture in the Dispatch. The Outstand- ing lunior Athlete, an annual -reward, was given to Debbie Cone. jocks Lettermen's Club was revived this year, by Mr. Tom Wheaton, with the purpose of forming a group of varsity letter people. This year, female lettermen were allowed to join the club. Difficulties faced the lettermen from the beginning when varsity cheer- leaders were voted in, but music and debate letter people were not allowed to join. Even with this drawback, the club was still 'able to head a successful clothing and toy drive at Christmas. ,rg g .g X ,,t, V , 1 9 5 l P x H ,, . ., ., , .1 -L 1 . ..,., ....,,f.-,..,. .. , ,,., .. 1.,f,.v1ef:-dfvawq-2-Q-vfvg-uefv'f:.yos1 I E EL 1, 121 F1111 it 'EM 1 ik In 1 1. r P l 1 fr ,1 i, ,i -.1 F 1.1 Q, 1 I I 1 1 1 , 11' ,Av , Y Y W - - ' ,. 4 .4-.Y -v oaieivi , . . ..,..i J,,..'.,,..,.311.,,,.....,,5 .A.,,..,..w.4..,..-.,.....Qi,.f,,..q1.-?.,,'-,.0....g-.15.',,,.-1?-5-: 'f ' f - ' 1 1 1, 1 1 11 JJ? Iunior Varsity took first in Conference by finishing the season with an 11-1 record. Mrs. Hudson was quite enthusiastic about her top players Missy Barber and Linda Grun, who out of 20 teams in District competition, captured a third place medal in doubles play. Individual pride was reflected in the faces of Missy Barber, Linda Grun, Tami Baynham, Lisa Wade, Dee Ann Greer, and Dana Rogers as they advanced into f Strokes District competition in singles play at St. Ioseph, Missouri. Rain and darkness affected two of the scheduled games during mid-season, tightening the girls' playing schedule, but this did not hamper the spirits of the tennis team as they ended the season with an 8-4 record. During the season, the players' concentration and confidence were stressed as each girl attempted to do her best in competition. Mrs. Hudson advised the players to play each point at a time and to make the opponent play your game. x v-xi'-'-'--'f--1 -1- Y.--rear:-vw-Q 11--1 aff- -f-yfyanff -M1--1-:--y--A -:X ' ---.1 .M 415- ...,..,,..y,41..,,'1..?-.4 ..f.Y,-.-,,1,,-,.::..1-. ,,-.-..- ....,-.. ,,::,..-U-T-...., 7-,--.-,,.,.:,.q,.:.,.,-0-..,!V.f 4'0u'r14 , WW-fc: Q3'2'Z9f K ..' This year's campaign began as the girls thought of catchy slogans and made original booths. g Lisa's Locker Room was used as a slogan for Lisa Andrews. Gloria Evola used a workshop decor for Glo's Garage. Glenski's General Store was used by Mary Glenski. An exotic machine with live robots was Logan's Run used by Debbie Logan. Karen's Korral was the hitching post for Karen Moody. Melinda Mulnix was often found .in Melinda's Motorcycle Shed. Francie's Ferris Wheel turned as Francie Glo Weber sold GAMBIA'S. Patty was filled with surprise as the crowd came to congratulate her. Looking back over the week of anticipation and excitement, all the girls would remember the theme Country Roads, as sung by Vicki Cone, Ieff Holeman, and Ioe Payne during the assembly. Nearing the end of another i Pa tty season, the Winter Sports teams were awarded good. luck charms from all seven candidates during the assembly. The girls were introduced by Debbie Logan, Pep Club vice-president. The seven queen candidates were chosen by the Wrestling squad and the Boys' and Cirls' Basketball Teams. The student body then voted for their choice of queen. Once again, a beautiful backdrop was' designed by Dee Carver. The drawing represented the theme, Country Roads. Some students arrived in Volkswagens and a few others in a rented limousine, but it soon became apparent that the room would be inadequate in size for the 500 students attending. Most ofthe evening was filled with picture taking, talking to friends, and dancing to the music of Union Station. I Roman tjoism I After Prom, many students enjoyed early morning breakfasts or late night parties. Even though the rainy evening put a damper on some activities, the evening proved to be enjoyable. ,ft , E.. 3 i LVMWMWWWN 3 gg, S Mfwfw NL S -'- -rw - w'wc-:1sr'ruq'-vqvfve-gpwff-'-5 M . -vrlvfrv-Qu:gmwN,,.5A.1,y,.,.5mf4.-.w-yqfrlzy-ifv,g-gggevfHy p.--.gn--2-ML-.-,mfr-f,,,.-'M ,tw -qyg,-1-1,-1.,x7-,yr V-,,g.-,H-W., 1---v--fs V W.. 1 ew , w- .. 1-'fy 1 4' 1 f - - ' ' ' i I 1 , .. , f , ......4i..' .-K-..-....:a-A---.-.-..,,:-...,, . -- . , 1 . ,, 1 , ,. -W ,-..g-,,-,.,,..,.x,: - --..,....,, ,, , - - , Af , 4 g.. -f:.,-.:.-ff V we- 'LA ----' ' ' A , N ,.,-,,--,,- - ,..,.1...--.-..,.,-.A---f --E X ,Viv I, 1' 1 -.
