Meeting with various faculty and student groups, clubs, and organiza- tions, the principals worked for good rapport on all levels at OPHS. Along with helping to spark enthusiasm and innovation, the administrators also had the less exciting tasks of handling enrollment, scheduling, and discipline problems. Mr. Dick Powers, activities co-ordinator and building supervisor, and Miss Vicki Baker, student personnel coordinator, carried out their responsibilities in coordinating practically all areas of Oak Park life. Students found many classes in a variety of areas. Courses were not limited to particular texts and materials. Along with the A-V equipment and library references, students found the department's resource center to be of great assistance in the preparation of assignments. Aside from basic study of grammar, literature, and writing, the student learns to listen, discuss, and think critically, not only in group sessions but with himself. Intimate Communications, Advance Comp., Grammar and Communications ll and Ill are a few of the courses offered. COE is a supervised work-study program for seniors, helping them get valuable experience before gradua- tion. Culminating the school year tor COE students was the annual banquet, which was attended by students and their employers. TV newsman Larry Moore was the main speaker. The purpose of FTA is to provide realistic educational activities for senior high students. Oak Park's FTA grew in 1976-77 to 31 members and was sponsored by Miss Lois Fann and Mrs. Cora Wright. Students not only worked at Oak Park, but also at Faubion, Clardy, Gashland, Linden West grade schools, and Antioch and New Mark Junior Highs. sl l 1 -ws, My , , ,,,,. Zfwfa . The major goal was to acquaint students with the skills of electricity, electronics, drafting, metal, wood, crafts and power mechanics. Those students enrolled in these classes worked on such projects as building design, car engines, ceramics, leather, plumbing, wood carving, wiring, and even the construction of a calcula- tor. The six faculty members of the I.A. Department worked to satisfy pupils' personal curiosity in all aspects of the topic. Assistance was provided to those who wished to pursue a career in industry. Many students from all areas of the department competed against other metropolitan schools in the Industrial Art Fair held April 20 at Winnetonka High School. 3- ' . l 9 I :mens-w.. . Headed by Louise Koerber, thirteen other ladies worked daily serving students and faculty. A new addition to the cafeteria was the ice cream dispenser which proved to be a good investment. Head custodian Jim Lawrence supervised ten other custodians and one lady custodian. Keeping Oak Park clean and sanitary was the major responsibility of the custodial staff. Further included duties were endless repair, upkeep of the campus, and assisting students and staff with day to day catastrophes. Both crews performed their jobs. with excellence. Starting the season slowly, the young, inexperienced Oakies made many mistakes which cost them victories. However, the team, which was made up mostly of juniors came on strong in the last half of the season to play over .500 baseball. According to Coach Jim Derry, things look good for Oak Park in 1977-78. The highlight of the season for Oak Park was the defeating twice ot state 2-A champion Truman, who lost only three times this year. In both victories Oak Park won on a three run home-run, one each by Doug Smith and Tom Lamb. , ., 9 X I 3,127 143 144 Despite their 11-13 season record, the Northmen baseballers went all the way to the finals in their regionals before falling. Oak Park battled their way over Maryville and won 6-3. In the second game Oak- Park again won by beating Excelsior Spring 6-3. Their regional play was halted when they lost to St. Joe Lafayette 4-7. Leading the young squad was top hitter Jack Bentley and top pitcher Jerry Keesee. Bentley was the first iunior to be captain in Oak Park history. Kevin Meese was named Mr. Baseball by the Pep Club. , ixffv-41'f::TmZ?E'1a , f-- ' .5 ,je I, wi., fi 'Y 1' 0 'I' ' ' 5 ,,. . 'A 2 ,,, i 7 Y Q N x Ji, 'V i 51 5 Y X . Dv 5. ,f .
