Representative ot The desire to excel was Gladden Dye, head football coach, who was instrumental in building The winning Northman tradition. His varsity Teams compiled a win-loss record ot 47-12-3. Under his leadership, The gridders won Three Suburban Eight conference championships and finished second Three times. Yells and routines characterized The pep and spirit of The varsity cheerleaders and pom-pon girls. nthusiasm and optimism were the result of the Tremendous effort and planning of pep club. The 400 members attacked their spirit-boosting duties with alacrity, their eagerness was indicated by an outstanding attendance at pep rallies and athletic events. Varsity, iunior varsity, sophomore cheerleaders and pom-pon girls led pep club to new heights of spirit and pep. Coordinating the club's innumerable proiects and activities were sponsors Mrs. Carol Shropshire and Miss Annette Luyben. Pep Club performed two community services besides aiding Oak Park in countless other ways. Participants raised funds for the March of Dimes at local shopping centers and iust prior to Christmas the club collected socks and mittens for the Clay County Clothes Closet. Tofinance the annual pep club banquet, club members washed cars at the end of April. ' Led by officers, Jane Reed, Marsha Brown, Su Thompson, Ruth Bergstrom and Ellen McCarrick, pep club had one of its most successful years.
